What do you mean by "could not configure"? Had you problems with other config
entries or is it that just the entry for rtl8139 was missing?
As a last resort you might try make config.
You might also want to take a look at /usr/src/linux/.config
[11:16:47 /tmp]$ grep RTL /usr/src/linux/.config
# CONFIG_RTL8139 is not set
[11:17:26 /tmp]$
