I am using Debian kernel-source packages.

[17:38:03 /tmp]$ head -13 /usr/share/doc/kernel-source-2.2.17/copyright

    $Id: copyright.source,v 1.5 1999/07/14 16:06:07 srivasta Exp $

This is the Debian GNU/Linux prepackaged version of the Linux kernel.
Linux was written by Linus Torvalds <Linus.Torvalds@cs.Helsinki.FI> and
others.

This package was put together by Simon Shapiro <Shimon@i-Connect.Net>, from
sources retrieved from directories under
ftp.cs.helsinki.fi:/pub/Software/Linux/Kernel/
The sources may be found at most Linux ftp sites, including
ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/

[17:38:09 /tmp]$

I was referring to 2.2.17 because I thought Debian kernel numbers are the
standard one. Yet after checking ftp.cs.helsinki.fi I tend to think that what
I have is a test version. Indeed, the package full name is 2.2.17pre6-1.

[17:43:15 /tmp]$ zcat /usr/share/doc/kernel-source-2.2.17/changelog.Debian.gz
| head -5
kernel-source-2.2.17 (2.2.17pre6-1) frozen unstable; urgency=low

  * New upstream release.

What is a -ac kernel?
