it's great as a file server, masquarading dialup, proxy and
whatnot. hey, I had a firewall on a T1 supporting 40 people that had
half the CPU power and only 8 megs :-)

what's expensive about two used NICs? you can probably even buy good new
ones for under 100 NIS each. worth it. you get a fileserver and more
importantly: EXPERIANCE. don't be afraid to invest in two good cards,
it's education you're buying too. playing with networks can teach you a
lot. in any case, when you think of work hours in making a parallel
cross cable, it's not cost effective (and compare a non-standard 800
Kbit link witha standardized 10 Mbit link...)
