"some combination of databases, the Web, Perl" - gives me a good idea:
If you have expertize with competing technologies for DB/web/perl/etc.
(like MySQL vs. PostgreSQL, Perl vs. PHP, etc.), a good comparison
between them will attract many people.
Development tools is another field with competition, as well as web-
based e-mail, and other dozens of fields. Just browse freshmeat, and
find fields with so many tools that do the same thing, and it confuses
people, who don't have tools for decisions.
Contrary to a normal person, nobody will flame you, and awarding one
technology will not start a religious war, since your opinion is
considered high and objective.
It is very hard to get an objective opinion these days, and when
trying to ask people, opposite answers are given. The online news-
letters are afraid of entering this mine field. People have no option
but evaluating one technology, just to find (after spending so much
time!) that the competitor is superior for their needs.
I was afraid to raise this idea in the beginning (because I thought it
would not be accepted), but since nobody has a better idea, I think it
is somethign that should be considered.
