Re: ADSL experiment
Thanks to all who answered my last message about the ADSL experiment. I have a
few more questions and I'd especially like to hear from anyone who is actually
using an ADSL connection on a LINUX box. I need all the help I can get :-)
BEZEQ will install my ADSL line **next week** and I want to be ready.
1 - I read the ADSL HOWTO for Linux by David Fannin, but I have no idea if it's
up-to-date (last updated 4/99) or if it's even relevant to Israel and BEZEQ
since I've read that there are no real international standards. Any comments ???

What have you solved ? Is this an all LINUX solution and does it in fact
work with the Bezeq WOW experiment ? Where will it be posted and what do you
mean by soon ;-)
3 - When BEZEQ asked me if I have WIN95 **or better**, I said yes. After all,
LINUX is **better** than WIN95 isn't it ;-) But will I have a problem when the
BEZEQ installation person comes next week ? Will he know what to do ? What do I
have to do or prepare in order not to have problems with the installation ? As
I wrote before, since I don't want to miss the opportunity to be in the ADSL
experiment, I will compromise and connect a WIN98 machine if necessary, but
that's not what I want to do. So I would like to be prepared for the
technician's visit.
4 - A number of people suggested WIN98 solutions (thanks to all) but none gave
any details except for program names. If I don't get an all LINUX solution,
I'll ask these nice people for more detailed info. But in any case, it was not
clear to me if anyone has actually tried these solutions or they were just
based on hearing about the various products.
5 - Obviously, in addition to setting up the ADSL LINUX connection, I'm going
to have to do something about security. So far, I have nothing set up -
firewall, disabling remote services like TELNET, etc. and I have no real
knowledge here. Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated and a check
list of what has to be done would be great.
6 - BTW - for anyone in the Raanana area who doesn't already know, if your
phone number is in one of the following ranges, you may still be able to get in
on the experiment. After all, the more LINUX users sign up, the better for us
all. Call Bezeq at 1-800-204444
7710000 to 7719999
7722200 to 7722299
7729000 to 7729999
7740000 to 7749999
I assume there are ranges of phone numbers in other parts of the country too,
but I have no info on this.
I was told I'll be charged 230 shekels for the ADSL modem (including
installation by BEZEQ) and the experiment is for three months at no charge.
Nobody seems to know what the cost will be after that (if the government gives
BEZEQ a license) but my guess is that in order to compete with cable, they
cannot charge a very high price. Of course, in addition to whatever they will
charge you still need an account with one of the INTERNET providers and I don't
know if they'll charge more for a wide-band connection t
han they charge for modem or ISDN service. Does anyone have any info on this
point ?
