I use a DEC VT520 and put in my lilo.conf these lines
append="console=ttyS1,115200n8 "
serial=1,38400n8
works well and I can enter commands at the lilo prompt and see all the
kernel messages.
Maybe you have a problem with the config of your terminal ? That is what
took most time for me.
(I run SuSE, too)
