Perhaps it's because you didn't choose 'CONFIG_EXPERIMENTAL=y'.
This driver is marked experimental, as can be seen at
/usr/src/linux/drivers/net/Config.in
(BTW, I use it, as a module (not compiled into the kernel) for 2 months
with 2.2.1[456] with no problems).
(BTW2: Shaul Karl said he has 2.2.17. Where did you get it? are you sure
it is not -ac or something? I can't see it on ftp.kernel.org)
