Hi,
I'm trying 2 build a DVD player using a Linux box.
What I wont is a fully functional DVD with surround (6
speakers) audio.
Searching the Linux-Compatibility-HOW-TO had left me a
little confused about what cards are or are not
compatible and what is the performance I can expect
from each card.
So I'll appreciate your advice on several subjects :
1) I've decided on Creative's PC-DVD Package which has
a DVD drive and a Decoder bundled in one box.
* Did anyone had used that DVD and can give he's
opinion on it's performances ?
* Is it Linux compatible ?
* What is a Dolby Digital 5.1, dose it mean I'll be
able to get 6 channels surround sound ?
* Do I need a sound card added to that bundle or is
the fact that the DVD has a Dolby Playback means that
I'll get surround sound ?
(DVD Specs can be found at

)
2) I'v added a sound card to my bundle, I figured that
if I'm building a DVD it can serve as my Hi-Fi 2. So
I've chose the SOUNDBLASTER LIVE! PLATINUM PC 5.1CTLR.
It was the only card which say that is supports 6
channels surround sound.
* Did anyone had used that card and can give he's
opinion on it's performances ?
* I understood from the HOW-TO that there are some
compatibility problems with that sound but I figured
that since Crative had lunched it's open source
drivers policy not very long ago, a fully functional
driver will appear in the new future.
Can one of you tell if these limitations are
significant or if there is a way to overcome them ?
(Sound Card Specs can be found at
http://www.tccomputers.com/cgi-bin/bp/629632041/fp/b/bw/bw964191.htm
)
3) I also wanted to use my TV as the box's monitor.
* Would the DVD decoder be able to do the job or do I
need a display card which has a TV out ?
General Q : Did anyone have experience with building a
Linux DVD & Hi-Fi system and can give a description of
the cards he used ?
So .. Thats it 4 now.
Any help would be appreciated.
