DHCP weirdness, please help ASAP
I'm encountering the most weirdest thing with DHCP.
My PC is connected through a local dormitories network using
dhcp protocol to obtain it's IP. For 1.5 years I've had the same
IP (we will call it IP-a) and never had any problems renewing it.
Today, I recompiled the kernel to support scsi emulation
for my cdr to work. After some time, it started to work
but I encountered some networks problems when using dhcp.
(to be exact, it complained about not having net-pf-17)
The next line in conf.modules solved the problem:
alias net-pf-17 af_packet
It now works, but!!!! I got some other IP (IP-b), and keep getting it
even when starting with my old (by the way it was default 6.1) kernel.
HOWEVER, when booting to WinNT, I do get my OLD IP (IP-a). How is it
possible?
I've always thouht that the IP I was given was some sort of
hash function of my MAC address. What could've caused the dhcp server
to start giving some other IP only to my linux?
Please help.
Thanks in advance,
Dmitry Fink
