rpm and deb are the ones used most widely, and the most advanced
too. Although other systems do exist, AFAIK there's none that is used
by more than a single distribution. So they're dismissable. Note that
one of the standard ways to install software on UNIX is with .tar.gz
files ("tarballs") that contain the source code. You compile and
install them usually by executing "./configure; make; make install"
within the directory once you open the archive. Other types of
software might have different conventions, i.e. perl programs you'd
sometimes install with "perl Makefile.PL" instead of "./config"
etc. Usually I prefer to install software from the rpm or deb, to keep
things neat and tidy, but knowing how to do install things from source
is very important IMHO...

Now, Linux-based distributions aren't that different from one
another. The basic stuff you use is always GNU, which is a standard
set of OS utilities. So if you learn a specific distribution it means
you only learn the surface of it. If you learn deeper, the
distribution wouldn't matter much to you. E.g. config files may be a
little different and placed somewhere else but once you find them,
you'd know how to edit them. And any UNIX would be easier once you
learn these things.
