Maybe. I can not tell. Does not seem related to ping though. You might check
the time of those pings or other crond related processes.
Yet due to the fact that this is not a production machine (is it?), and it ran
for several months without any problems I would blame a short power failure
and forget it. If this is a more serious problem like hardware failure then it
should reveal itself at some point. Do not see the reasons to hunt it down
right now.
As for the fact that you have other machines, perhaps this one was consuming
more power at that moment. The fact that this was not a normal shutdown
support the explanation about a short power failure.
Why are you using ping that way? Is it to keep your IP?
