just a small question: does it ask that question (about volume, NOT
valume) before it begins dumping, or in the middle?

if it asks that in the middle - it means your first tape has run out (was
fully used) and you need to place a new tape in the drive before the dump
may continue. ofcourse you cannot overcome this unless you:

1. use larger tapes.
2. use compression.
3. use a tape library, that has an auto-changes. for such a device you'll
need software that can support it, ofcourse.
