Linux cd

I was wondering which distro is most recomanded for someone who wants to
learn linux in order to posibly work on it in Israel ( I am aware that
which distro is best is kind of a religious war, but the question is more,
which distro is most common on public systems in israel)
It looks like its redhat from reading the posts, but I am looking for
someone who is working with linux ( as a job ) that might be able to give
me a correct answear.
Also, except for debian and its variants ( correl ? ) is there another
package system other then rpm ( I am not talking about dpkg )

Thanx ( and I am hoping that this won't start a war :) )
