option 3 if possible, but mainly option 1. I have to add linux to a
cluster where UIDs have been defined on sun machines that right now the
linux won't see if it joins the NIS maps. it's not a good idea, I know,
but it's the fastest solution for the problem at the moment. so:

a. what binaries need recompiling,

b. and any reason it's not done today other than maybe on SGI-linux?
