Hold it! easy!

1. yes, you can run Athlon with Linux, but in order to get optimization 
you'll need GCC 2.95 (I think) and development kernel (2.3.40+)

2. 3DNow supports - available in Mesa. AGP support (for 3D I assume) is 
available (not as a stable) inside Linux kernel (look for GART)

3. Kernel optimization - you can select Athlon if I'm not mistaken in the 
kernel menu and get some optimizations.

4. GCC & Athlon - I don't think you need something special for it - it's 
not like they added any new commands (and I'm NOT talking about 3DNow)

5. Athlon SMP boards - nice dream. I want one also. Will be available at 
the end of this year hopefully.
