You are wasting your time (not to mention your money) with books.

If it's Linux you are interested in, just start reading the kernel
sources. They are generally not difficult to read and they are all
fascinating because you get to see how a real OS works inside. You will be
surprised at how much you can learn in a short amount of time. It does
help to have Steven's "TCP/IP Illustrated" open for the net stuff and to
have Stevens "Advanced Programming in the Unix Environment" open for the
other stuff but it's not really necessary for the most part.

X windows, Gtk and the rest is application development - nothing to do
with Linux really.
