Re: Apache x 10 ?

As one who is subscribed to the mailing list of new-httpd, I can
tell you that it was offered to the ASF, but was rejected. Parts of
it may be combined in the future 2.0. It doesn't mean that these
patches are bad, but that ASF is a little heavy, and very
conservative.
In any case, don't expect x10 improvement. Most of the patches
attack easy issues, like CPU, while 99% of the bottlenecks are hard
to attack (I/O, slow and heavy CGI's, slow context switching of the
kernel, etc.).
In addition, some of the improvements are specific for IRIX (such
as 64bit optimizations, etc.).
I believe the guy that in optimal situation (the "right" OS, the
"right" Internet connection - 100Mbit like in NetCraft, the "right"
site - no dynamic contents), it is possible to gain the claimed
900% improvement, but don't expect more than x1.2 (20%) in real
world applications. An average improvement of 10% sounds logical.
In any case, it is a great thing.
Hint: If you use SSL, any small improvement of it will give you
much more performance - like enabling the Assembly, the MM
communication, etc.
