Debian 2.2 install fails

Hi,

I've tried installing Debian 2.2 on an old 486 here (16MB RAM) with Intel
EtherExpress 16 (not pro, I think) ISA NIC. I've choosed eexpress as the
net module, and it was installed successfully. At the "install base system"
stage I've chosen "network", and directed the machine to
us.debian.org/[...] via a proxy (another machine, with modem). The download
worked for about 3mb, and then freezed. Trying to use "stop" didn't work,
but when I've switched to the second VC, the shell work (the download was
still halted).

I've ran setup again, and this time I've tried to install from a webserver
on the LAN (with base2_2.tgz I've downloaded from debian.org). The download
stopped at 5mb this time, same symptoms.

I've tried replacing the crossed cable with a real hub, and it showed the
Linux machine stopping the activity first. Again -- at 5mb.

I've also tried replacing the EtherExpress with an SMC Ultra (big chip says
SMC Ultrachip 83C790QF; FCC: j158216cc), but couldn't found an appropriate
module for this card (smc-ultra, ne and wd failed. Using the DOS util to
configure EEPROM for NE2000 and WD8003 emulations didn't help). Replacing
the SMC NIC with another SMC didn't help either.

Installation disk set: vanilla (5 diskettes).
NIC on the server machine: Realtek 8029 PCI.

Searching google/linux, debian->lists and linux-il@plasma brought no results.

Help, please!
