doesn't that what amd suppose to do??
at least that what I use for auto mounting things from NIS and so..
which leads to the question what diffrent between autofs and amd
I don't think autofs can work without amd..and i think it doesn't use
maps..
but am not sure

| redhat comes with autofs, similar in behavior and almost compatable with
| the Solaris automounter (it won't do /net/hostname type mounts, not -
| type mounts on the root directory, but otherwise it's compatable with
| automount maps over NIS). you may also want to try the new betas of
| autofs 4.0 available from kernel.org, or its mirror on our own
