That's true, but many open-source projects have many co-authors
(Linux, Perl, emacs, whatever). It can be ridiculously difficult
to contact all the authors, even if you are willing to pay them a
nice sum for use of their code.

Ah, but that's exactly it: your new app is *not* "doomed" to
GPLhood. It is doomed to having freely available source, which
is not the same thing.
The specific GPL *component* stays GPL, of course. But the app
as a whole could be distributed, say, with the BSD license if
that's what you prefer.
