Have you tried this automount tool?
I recall we demoed RedHat 6.1 with Gnome etc. on the installfest
in Dizengof, and at one point it began flooding some device
error messages to the console requiring (what a shame!)
a reboot. I think RedHat's CD "autorun" mounter is to be
blamed for this.

RedHat's sndconfig (/usr/bin/setup) detected my Ensoniq 1371
flawlessly and modified conf.modules. Ethernet devices it
configures too. I think those were in RedHat before 6.x.
And now, kudzu tries detecting new hardware on every boot,
so I think we've reached the utopia on that.

ALSA's snd-detect shows my card up in /proc/asound/detect
but doesn't automagically load it. Not sure it's supposed
to either.
