Hi.
Lets see...
So I'll appreciate your advice on several subjects :
>1) I've decided on Creative's PC-DVD Package which has
>a DVD drive and a Decoder bundled in one box.
Well, what you are saying is not clear. WHICH Creative pack? DXR2? DXR3? newer?
For the DXR2 there is support, but the quality of DVD display on monitor is
very bad quality. If you have a TV near your PC at home, then I suggest to
connect it to watch TV.
The card itself is supported under Linux - see http://opensource.creative.com
If you got a DXR3 or newer (DXR5 and DXR6 I think), then you can test the
preliminary driver at: http://sourceforge.net/projects/dxr3/
Regarding 6 channel sound (it's called AC3 or 5.1 cause it's not a really 6
channels) - I don't know what to tell you. The group who are writing the
Sound Blaster Live driver are working now on the EMU10K programming so the
AC3 sound might take some time to come to Linux..
As for software DVD playback - the Livid group is working on it - you'll
have to wait few more months until they'll release a beta. Right now you
can fiddle with it - if you know Linux well - on http://www.linuxvideo.org
On the other hand, if you have Matrox G200 or G400 and you're running XFree
4.0.1 and a really fast processor - something like 700+ AMD or Intel - then
head over to http://xine.sourceforge.net and try the Xine player - if
you're going to watch DVD's - grab yourself a DeCSS program also (to
unlock the DVD before you watch it)
Conslusion: for now (just for now) Linux is not ready for the average users
to play DVD's unless you're very good with Linux and know how to
modify/tweak many parts...
So, for now - use Windows for this.
