Not reall needed - Mandrake has a feature which is called Lin4Win : it will
install itself as a loop device on the windows partition, modify the MS-DOS
multi config menu (if you have one , or create it for you) to use loadlin to
boot directly to Linux, and place an icon on your windows desktop to do the
same.
You do it by poping the Mandrake CD into your dirve while in windows, goind
into the Lin4Win directory and run the install.bat you find there. it will
ask for some info about what is the CD and on what windows partition you
want to install it, and then a dialog box will popup ask you how much size
you want to allocate to the loop device and how much of that will go into
swap. then it will make that loop device and install linux onto it. the
installation process is ofcourse a lot longer (formattin the loop device can
sometimes take over 20 minutes on a slow machine and for a large loop
file).. about the actual speed of the loop device - on a reasonable machine
(let's say - a K6-2 with a few MHzs to spare, or better) you'd probably
wouldn't notice that it's a little slower because it has to use a virtual
file system. I didn't use it much (had it installed for about two days on my
windows box before I discarded both the loop installation, and the windows
:-), and with UMSDOS not even that, but I gather that its faster then a
UMSDOS installation.
