debian and deriviates use .deb, Red Hat invented RPM and that is used by
Caldera, Mandrake, Phat, TurboLinux and many others, then there are a
dependency-less Slackware .tgz, and finally Stampede Linux uses .stm (or
something similar). all in all they are all just means to an end. if you
can't find the right one for your distro, compiling should not scare
you.
