A good idea. I have a probably better idea:
abandon symbolik links at all. Anyway, when there is a problem in
configuration, you can never know, whether it is link or the real file.
As an extension, the idea of abandoning long file names sounds good too.
Of course, short file names are not more useful that long ones, so we
should abandon the file concept. Note that such a clever step will
prevent you of getting errors from various kinds of files: devices,
fifos etc. You really do not need files, since all file does is
providing name for resource. You have the resource anyway, so why
bother with overengineering?
This will render all file-oriented errors obsolete - thus you will
not bother anymore with compiler errors, X config etc etc etc.
Oh, yes, /etc will not be a problem either.
Since application software wont work anyway, you will probably erase
libc. Or you wont, since you have nothing to erase.
That way, you can have a better system, which does not do anything, and
does not it with a great style....
After the bright vison of great future, can you ellaborate on your idea?
