As you may have heard on this morning's news, Knesset Speaker, Avraham Burg,
has ordered the timezone dates to be stuck off the state registry since
Minister of Interior Sharansky did not convene the Knesset Interior Committee
prior to registering the dates on the March 15, 2000 deadline for doing so.
This opens up the possibility of a Supreme Court challenge to the dates
and if the court upholds the stiking off the dates from the state registry,
then the end date for the year 2000 will revert back to the date decided upon
by previous Minister of Interior Suissa -- i.e. Friday, September 15, 2000.
Note that the start date of Friday, April 14, 2000 was already that of the
previous minister so this will stand in any case.
This should not effect the dates of 2001-2002 since there is ample time to
convene the Knesset Interior Committee to confirm these dates (the law allows
the altering of a date up to six months prior to the previously set date).
In anticipation of a Supreme Court challenge, I have prepared files in
ftp://ftp.cs.huji.ac.il/pub/tz/israel/*/ of the form 'X', 'X.sharansky'
and 'X.suissa' where 'X' is one of {zicfile, tztab, timezone.2000}
depending on the operating system and 'X' is currently still a symbolic link
to the file 'X.sharansky' pending a ruling in a Supreme Court challenge.
Happy Purim,
Ephraim
