Linux Mandrake 7 server login problems

Hi all.
At my work i finally succesefful explained to my boss y Unix systems are
better than NT for Workstation (the best point was: Microsoft's hotmail
uses Unix system and not NT)
so we decided to install linux mandrake 7 as server (i use at home for
as Workstation and i very happy with it)
Ok..
because of the very very old VGA card the installation was done in text
mode
the installation had completed..
the computer in booted
in the login prompt i entered user: root, pass: *************
login incorect..
i tryed a lot of combinations.. nothing
i think: ok.. maybe i entered wrong password.. so i reinstalled linux...
now i checked evey letter twice in root password
rebooted..
login incorect..
the same problem again
i reinstalled once again and entered a very simple pass: qwerty (it is
impossible to write it wrong)
rebooted..
and once again: login incorect..
and the most stragne thing that i have a non root account all those 3
times that i installed, and this account was loged in with no problems..

What should i do with it?

and all the daemons are work fine.. i am able to access all www, ftp,
nfs, sambe and etc..
the only problem is that i can't login as root..
.
if anyone can help me.. please reply to this message!
thanx
Pavel
