I'd bet on fbdev. ggi seems to have the problem of defining (way) too
wide goals, plus the fact that whenever they start to have more than two
kgi drivers, they redesign the driver API.

I don't know what do you mean by "annoying mode switches", but using
fstv (my program) with svgalib at 640x480, and a standard text mode,
there is no noticable mode switch (as there is between 1024x768 and
text mode).
On your Mach64? does the atyfb work, or do you use vesafb?
Atyfb should be similiar in speed to standard text mode.
