Is there really a need to send HTML mail? Do you think HTML
mail actually adds something to your point?

If, by any chance, your excuse is that you can't configure your
mail program to send plain-text-only messages, let me assure you
that all Linux mail programs I know about (including, but not
limited to Pine, Mutt, mh, VM, GNUS, Mew and PMS) have a don't-send-HTML-mail
mode.

I'm not sure Slackware is the distro I'd recommend to someone who wants
as much out of the box functionality. Maybe SuSE, Mandrake or Debian
would be a better choice.

You know the joke that goes "Say you're walking down Harlem st., and
you see a huge negro, what does he do to you? Whatever he wants"? Well,
you can do with Linux whatever you want. Since few of us have great
talents at mind reading, it's hard for us to guess what you want
to do on your computer.

Since on my computer Debian GNU/Linux is the only OS installed, I can
tell you what I do with it (which can be done with Linux by definition):

* Read important weblogs (http://slashdot.org, http://advogato.org,
                          http://www.kuro5hin.org and others)
* Read daily comics (http://userfriendly.org, http://www.dilbert.com)
* Participate in mailing lists (linux-il, python-list and others)
* Occasionally, read newsgroups (comp.lang.python, rec.humor.funny)
* Program in Python, Perl and C
* Participate in Free Software projects (Python, PMS, Bicycle Repair Man)
* Write articles (in LaTeX and HTML)
* Participate in IRC discussions (#python, #debian and others)

Additonally, some of the things I don't do, but can be done:

* Edit spread sheets (GNumeric)
* Edit pictures (GIMP)
* Participate in ICQ, AIM, Yahoo! Messenger

And more.

Of course, Linux is not your only choice -- but in the free UNIX
market, Linux is probably the most used one, so it's probably better
to start with that and move to others if you have specific needs.
