1. RH 5.1 is very old, compared to Mandrake 7. In particular, it had linux
2.0.xx, and mandrake has 2.2 (.14?). Of course things changed, maybe not for
good. Also, maybe for better optimization, the kernel now demands better behaviour
from the hardware.
2. You use both disks at maximum speed (I guess), 40MB/s. Try to lower that to
the minimum, and gradualy increase, if it helped.
3. Check very carefully your SCSI termination. Especially at these high speeds,
it's important to play by the rules - have exactly one termination at each end.
4. You say you had to 'kill it'. kill what? it seems you get these messages at boot,
not during some process run (or maybe during module load). If I am right, you can
check a 2.0 kernel (with 2940 compiled in) easily by booting it - you don't have
to install RH 5.1 or something. If you get these problems even then - it's the
hardware. If not, it still might be (as I said), but I would start to look for
software (e.g., try to boot a development kernel, search the web for patches for
the driver, etc.).
Hope this helps,
didi
