Hi Adi, nice seeing you here after all these years!

First, it doesn't matter what kernel you use. I suppose you want to
upgrade an old Red Hat installation. The fact is that Red Hat still
supports "crypt" hashes (it's actually an option in the installation,
IIRC). So there shouldn't be any problem just copying the password
file.
