Hmm.... here's my VALinux story, for what's it worth:
Somewhere around 1 year a go we bought from them 4 machines: one monster
4 way Xeon 400 Mhz with a 40GB Raid5 array and 3 rack mounted "pizza box"
web servers (we have a big site ;-)
They a little problem with getting the machine to us (in LA, not in
Israel!) on time, but after a few (angry) phone call everything was fine
and we got the machines.
The machines were beautifully configured, built and came with everything.
We installed and went operational.
3 months later the 4 way Xeon monster drops dead . Just like that (no, it
wasn't a power surge or any outside thing). Our local tech team managed
to get the machine running again, sans two CPU.
We called VALinux in panic (we had 1 year warranty) and told them to send
a technician pronto, after a lot of wasted time and phone calls to Larry
A. the CEO they told us they'll send a technician the other day.
Well their person came, tried to fix the problem, failed and just left
the machine as it was (not even in a bootable state)without telling us
anything. We later found out that the guy wasn't a VALinux employee at
all - they just phoned some local tech in LA and asked him to take a
look.
The end of the story is that they flew a "real" technician, with a
duplicate machine, replaced everything but the HD ()which had stuff we
needed on them) and even upgraded us to 450 MHz CPUs as a compensation.
Since then (knock knock...) we didn't have any problems, with either
VAlinux or their machines. They even answer email question although we're
not covered by the warranty any longer...
AFAIK they are a great company and we caught them on a "bad day". I even
considering buying more machines from them... well maybe :-) but they
certainly screwed up in our case.
BTW - I would love to hear abour other good source of reliable "real"
servers... not in Israel.
