IGLU meeting - Feb. 4th

(this message was sent 2 hours ago to linux-il-announce but got eaten
by cs.huji. Ely: please check it!)

Hi There!
---------
This reminder about IGLU's meeting this coming Friday. the message goes
out on linux-il-announce, a very low-bandwidth list created for event
announcemnts organized by the Israeli Group of Linux Users (aka IGLU,
aka Linux-IL, autbka ILUG).

please forward this to other Unix professionals or fans that may not be
on the list.

RSVP:
-----
if you like what we have to offer below and are intending to come: it's
FREE and open for all, lectures are intended for ages 0x04 to 0x7F. only
please send a short note to linux-rsvp@ira.scso.com and tell us how many
people are coming so we can arrange a bigger room if needed.

What's planned:
---------------
After one lecture on the general importance of standards (thanks
Maddog!) and one very technical on the kernel sources of open() from
Ury, we are having a different type of meeting this time (diversifying
is good)

(changes may take place at the last moment ofcourse)

- Marc Volovic will present a lecture on "Lessons from Large
Linux Sites in Israel".
The subject matter will cover installing Linux on a somewhat massive
scale in a Bio R&D company and installing a major Linux server with at
another Bio R&D company --- hardware selection, caveats, etc.

- Hetz Ben-Hemo will show and tell about the latest Beta 2.0 of VMWare
for Linux, the product that enables you to run a linux or a windows
machine under a host Linux system.

- I'll try to arrange a short list of interesting news items and
announcements from the LinuxWorld Expo opening tommorow in Manhattan.

- We will discuss future activities of IGLU, like possible commercially-
sponsored booths at future tech shows in Ganey Hata'arucha.

- Some bouncing of ideas about the redesign of our website into a more
lively, informative and dynamic one, and making it useful/approachable
to the press and future users. Linux is now in the public eye and needs
a good address to represent itself in Israel too.

- Talking about a "demo day" on February 17th. Microsoft are announcing
Win2K at the Cinerama on that Thursday at 16:30. All over the US and
most of the world, linux users will be standing outside handing fliers
and free CDs to the people coming in. We will be there too, and want to
discuss organization details. see: http://www.linuxdemo.org

(last three items will be an open discussion chaired by Eitan Shefer)

Where & when:
-------------
The meeting will be as before at IDC in Hertzelia (Hamerkaz Habein
Tkhumi - used to be the nun-mem base just south of the airport). map
is here: http://www.idc.ac.il/main/Content/Bigmap.html

The classroom number is 22, it's the one at the far end of the second
floor of Radzyner, the big white three-story building at the middle of
the campus. the room has a PA system (Amos! we want to see the Empeg!
:-), and a projector for our lectures.

The date is THIS coming Friday, 4.2.00, and we're gonna start showing up
at around 9am. You are welcome to get early and get to know the people
behind the Email addresses and urban legends. Linux geeks meetings are
never boring and it's a great chance for newbies to ask veteran users
some questions face-to-face instead of the delay of a mailing list.
feel free to bring laptops (show off cool stuff you hacked together or
ask us to help you with setups).

The lectures and stuff will start at around 10am, and end when people
decide they will (i.e. start throwing SIGTERM at the guy/gal at the
whiteboard :)

We have a very loaded meeting for this weekend, and we won't blame
anyone for not staying till 3-4pm when we get kicked out :)

Future meetings:
----------------
as always, you can request certain subjects or offer lectures you can
give to us yourself.

the meetings are for now on Friday mornings, every first Friday of the
month, and special events added along the way.

lectures in the pipeline for the next meetings:

- Ury Segal about the Fork() syscall in the kernel (formatted like his
lecture on open())

- Chen Shapira will Give a Python primer, on why she finds it to be the
perfect tool for prototyping, and some words on her work on Zope.

- myself on basic workstation and server securing, both for dialup and
LAN. and building of a basic office-class proxy-firewall

- there was some demand for a short kernel reconfiguration and
compilation workshop, anyone is welcome to pick up the glove.

- Prof. Amnon Barak of the Hebrew University about the MOSIX project and
why he chose to move it to linux. (He doesn't know it yet, but we're
sure he will agree :-)

We also have a quite a few linux companies and startups in Israel that
write software for it or use it in embeded systems (like Nbase). We
welcome introductions of such products and in fact encourage you to come
and make the official announcements of new products on our meetings. No
need to mention here the marketing value of the cooperation with the
Linux community, and we hope we can all help eachother :)

Rides:
------
Lots of people are looking for rides from Jerusalem and such. I'm
volunteering my mailbox as a dating service for car ride seekers and
drivers until we find a better solution (or coordinator). there's a good
chance I'll have 2 seats in my car available for the return trip to
Jerusalem to some of you that don't mind coming on the bus but want to
return after busses stop running.

more stuff to know:
-------------------
We have a book, software and equipment borrowing list and quite a few
people offering to burn CDs for you. Myself, I can make you a CD of
Mandrake, Caldera, RedHat, Star Office or a few others things, just tell
me in advance and bring me a blank CD-R media to the meeting in exchange
(preferably not TDK :-)
