Does wu-ftpd use inetd? Does inetd launch it via tcpd? Then tcpd would
attempt to perform the reverse DNS lookup.
Why don't you map all local IPs to hostnames in /etc/hosts?
e.g.
perl -e 'for (1..255) { print "192.168.0.$_\tlocal_$_\n"; }' >> /etc/hosts
