I have the same CDRW (YAMAHA CRW8424S) and it works great under linux.
Are you sure that you configured the SCSI card correctly? Mine came with the
card - advansys SCSI card. If you have this card too, make sure that you load
the advansys driver.
If it's loaded you should see something like that in dmesg:
scsi0 : AdvanSys SCSI 3.3G: PCI Ultra: IO 0xDC00-0xDC0F, IRQ 0xB
Vendor: YAMAHA Model: CRW8424S Rev: 1.0j
Type: CD-ROM ANSI SCSI revision: 02

About --scanbus - you don't see your normal CD drive because it only shows
CDRW's.
