Re: HTML Mail banned on IGLU mail list ?

Hello!

About HTML mail and this list... I think one matter was not named here.
Think about the following: the folder containing the IGLU mailing list
messages for the last 6 months or so is around 13Mb in size. At least on
my side. Were the messages here written in HTML - the size would at
least double. Why? Because HTML tends to be longer than text, a specially
when it is generated by beasts like hotmail RichText ActiveX control. Not
only that HTML has all the annoying tags that are used to convey graphical
and semi-graphical information - emails that are sent in HTML allways bare
a plain-text copy of the letter in case the mail-reader doesn't know
HTML... So - saving space is very important, considering the fact that the
bigger this list gets, the more space it takes on the hard-disk, mail
relays and so on.

Another matter is the Hotmail RichText control. It has bugs a handful.
Besides generating very sluggish html (without BODY predictate, for
example), it also send emails without putting a break between the last
line of the header and the first line of the message. This may actually
cause some mail-relays to wonder for a second and trash that email. So in
general, it is not recommended to use RichText control on Hotmail. Simply
choose not to use it (there are radio-boxes right above the composition
box on hotmail compose page) and thus make sure Your emails are always
readable by others.

Another thing - with as sophisticate technology as the one we're trying to
use around here, the moto should always be: "The simplier - the better!".
Or in other words - I'd rather use my CPU to render 3D model of the sun
and my HD to save the results of that proccess, while email can be lean
and mean with text-only messages limited to a maximum of 64Kb.

HTML usage in emails
