RE: some interesting news from the linux arena

Great Bridge was not synonymous with PostgreSQL. It had nothing to do
with postgresql.org. It had almost nothing to do with PostgreSQL
development.

Great Bridge was one of many companies offering service and support
for PostgreSQL. Perhaps they had more money than other companies, but
they wasted that investment.

Red Hat charges *less* than Great Bridge was asking. When Red Hat
announced PostgreSQL support several months ago, Great Bridge reduced
their prices dramatically -- but it was too late.

Red Hat hopes to make up for their low prices in volume, which has
worked for them in the operating system business.

I've never heard anyone say that PostgreSQL is a viable competitor to
Oracle. Oracle has more features, is faster, and has many more
clients.

But hey, it also costs a ridiculous amount of money to buy -- and then
you have to hire a part- or full-time DBA, and an expensive service
contract from Oracle.

Most businesses don't need all of Oracle's speed and features, and
they certainly cannot afford the outrageous prices that Oracle
charges. For those organizations, PostgreSQL is an excellent choice.
At least, that's the theory -- I can tell you from personal experience
that it's not an easy job to sell people on open-source software.

You seem to have accepted the hype about Great Bridge without
understanding that they were a bit player (so to speak) in the world
of PostgreSQL.

Feel free to tell your friends to buy Oracle -- but don't be surprised
if they faint when they hear the latest prices. PostgreSQL might not
be for everyone, but it is an excellent solution for many people, and
the demise of Great Bridge won't change that.
