I think that principally if you need your PC/other computer do what you
want, you need an OS that can provide you most control. for now the
Linux/unix GUI front-ends of all the programs are usually "skins" and
actually use utilities - command line utilities. these utilities are the
essence of unix idea - basic shell with lots of utils for any purpose. GUI
is just another interface. if you invest in your external apearence you
can forget about your internals - your soul.
so for now the development of GUIs is detached from the system
development, and so it shall be:
we're not trying to make/use a Britney Spears OS (though I don't know her
personally, and maybe her silly sayings are just her GUI ;) )
.. in spite the fact you can make your linux look as any other OS and even
better (check themes.org )
besides there are many other pros for GUI independance of the core
program.
I believe that linux is much more user friendly than other unices (take
OpenBSD as example, and not only unices - take win95 ), but "friendly" is
not "foolproof", so use the brains, and you'll profit (generally). if
somebody can't use his brains... maybe he/she shouldn't handle a
computer... Linux also has much potential as any workstation type or
server:
Gamer's Place (yes many games don't run yet, but lokigames do),
Digital Audio Workstation (much development in the last year, finally),
Graphic Designer's Station (photoshop, Gimp, CADs etc.)
Office Station (3 office suites.. hebrew ? I can type/see hebrew in
Koffice..with some copy-paste issues),
Developer Platform (no comments),
or a Server(no words).
and the "strength" of it that any distribution is only a set of software
packages chosen by someone. So, if you need it custom - you can install a
base system of any distro and then to build any set of packages you like
to fit your needs.
And don't forget, GUI is just interface. the implementation is what
matters.
another light on the subject.
Max.
sorry if i repeat something that was said.just had to spill it all.
