You have three choices:
(This isn't as fresh in my mind as it used to be, so I hope all my comments
are correct).
1) The emu10k1 driver included with the kernel
>From what I remember this is not the driver below, but I could be wrong :)
If it is I am reasonably sure it is an old version which does not have all
the features mentioned below.
2) The emu10k1 "open source" driver from Creative
(http://opensource.creative.com)
Used to include a binary file, but so far as I know it is now entirely open
source. Includes mixer programs to access the the spdif digital out, and
routing stuff (which channels go to which of the 4 speakers). in digital
mode front and back speakers are stereo mirrored from what I remember.
might be worth going to the page for updated details.
3) The alsa emu10k1 driver (http://www.alsa-project.org/)
There are ALSA drivers for the SB Live 5.1, but it should be noted that the
card is currently on the project's "black list" because Creative won't
supply the specs for the card. As such you don't have any of the features
mentioned above. The 0.9 series has lets u specify digital out as a module
parameter, think i got it to work. the alsa mixer is really weird, u can
fiddle and change the various volumes but its not quite right, like some
controls will change rear volume when its meant to be master volume, etc.
