(Positive) Under Control Flame Wars (UCFW)

[I know that the Subject sounds provocative, but please read on...]

I want to start a new kind of threads in this group, that may be very
useful to most of us.

When somebody wants to know how to do something in Linux, all he has to
do is to RTFM (Read The Fabolous Manual ;-)

But when somebody has to choose between two competing packages for
Linux, he is in a trouble; Unless there is a clear winner, no serious
how-to/manual/etc. will give him a professional answer. Nobody really
expects TheLinuxJournal to just say: "PostgreSQL beats MySQL in any
field of comparison that we tested" or vice versa (just for example).
Of course not the manual or the HowTo.

Users always can just try all the competing packages, and decide for
themselves, but this is not an option too: First, usually the learning
curve is one of the most important criteria, and spending time to learn
all the competing packages doesn't help, of course. In addition, some
differences can be learned only after a long time: For example:
stability, or surviving heavy loads.

As a community (or a mailing list), we can help each other by sharing
our experience.

Of course, some issues are too controversial and may cause a flame war.
This is the reason why I'm not going to be the one who raises the
question of "KDE vs. GNOME" (this is a hint for a question that I want
to see raised. But not by me! ;-)

I used the provocative name "Under Control Flame Wars" (or UCFW), more
for fun and as a joke. This is not the purpose, of course.

I don't know if this type of discussions is common (maybe there is
already a name for it). And I don't believe that I re-invent the wheel.
I'm sure it is already done in other Linux mailing lists.

What do you think?
Express your opinion. You may be pro, you may be con, and you may even
veto. If nobody vetoes, I'll post a subject that concerns me and many
others, to hear the list's experience and opinion.

Regards,
