NFS is a good way.

1. Set the export in Solaris (in Redhat it is in /etc/exports) to something
like "/the/exported/directory (ro)" - this will export in read-only mode
the directory (man exports to see the options).
2. Restart the NFS ("/etc/rc.d/rc3.d/S60nfs restart" should do).
3. Login as a root in the Linux machine, create test_dir and do
"mount -t nfs Solaris_ip:/the/exported/directory test_dir".

This should work.
Now edit the right parameters in the "exports" file and fstab.
