ALSA are DRIVERS (and api,  but thats another issue). So you can run Esound 
with the ALSA drivers - it's using the same resources actually.

Actually, the people at Redhat that works on GNOME really like the aRTs which 
comes from the KDE. It gives much more then Esound (as well as extremly low 
latency which is important on real-time applications), but unfortunately, 
stupid GNOME pride have caused that someone will write GStreamer (which 
currently seems to grab twice the resources compared to  Esound)
