Actually, simulated burning worked when I reduced the speed to 1x, and
then I fiddled with hdparm.
The final CD-ROM was burned at 4x, with DMA enabled (and 255-sector
lookahead) for the hard disk, and DMA enabled for the CD-RW.
According to simulation, 8x would have been marginal.
So the underrun hypothesis has been confirmed.
Since the CRW2200E comes with "underrun protection", my conclusion is that
this nifty feature needs software support. I wonder whether it'll be
supported under Linux sometime.

There is no IGLU Cabal. When a guaranteed response for overrun and
underrun conditions is available for Linux systems, which based upon
version 6.4.x of the kernel, and which are used for managing Style-Forward
wrap engines - then it'll be possible to organize meetings of the IGLU
Cabal with attendees from several planets and planetoids.
