x.org supplies a 'reference implementation' of an X11R6 system. this
system is not optimized to any environment, and does not support all
features required for specific environments (e.g. on many worstations, the
display controll was done using a 'frame buffer' device. on PCs, you have
its VGA, SVGA, XGA and more modenr standards.

xfree86 is a real implementation of the X window system, for i386-based
computers. as such, it will support PC screen cards, be optimized for the
PC environment, support various i/o devices that exist on the PC
(joysticks?) - and now also has support for hardware accelerated cards
such as those coming from Nvidia, or the late 3dfx (i _think_), supports
open-GL and other aspects that might not be covered by the code coming
from x.org . and above all - its realy free. and was free even when
X.org's (X/OPEN or whatever name they had back then) wasn't.
