A few years back I did a system under OS/2 where we hooked up two barcode
readers through decoders which were connected to PC serial ports. Communications
were effected by setting the decoders to an agreed baud rate and selecting a
format for exchange of byte strings - as I recall, using a grotty little DOS
programme you could run off a diskette. Thereafter you could communicate with
the barcode readers with nothing special - just open the serial ports and away
you go. There was enough documentation to write your own grotty little setup
programme if you really wanted to. (I didn't.) As long as your supplier can give
you a stand alone diskette amd/or documentation on decoder setup, there's
nothing specifically "linuxy" about the rest.
