weird hard-disk performance prob

Hi!

I'm getting this weird(?) behaviour from my system:

2 UDMA Harddisks, connected to a PIO4 motherboard (A Classic Pentium 200)

They read at 5-8 Megs/sec, but they write at 1MB/sec.
Is this normal?

I'm using reiser 3.x on SuSE7.0/2.4.9 kernel

13:54|[pharoe] root:~#hdparm -Tt /dev/hdc /dev/hdd

/dev/hdc:
 Timing buffer-cache reads: 128 MB in 5.47 seconds = 23.40 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads: 64 MB in 7.57 seconds = 8.45 MB/sec
