aviplay (http://divx.euro.ru) has a handy UI and plays AVIs and ASFs
with various codecs. It works just as fine as native Windows players,
responds immediately to scrolling, supports subtitle files and tries to
play Windows Media streaming contents too (with varying success). It
can go fullscreen.
The problems:
- With big ASF files, it'll take a long time to regenerate
indexes for the file.
- No playlist, no scrollbar while in full-screen.

mplayer is recommended for ASFs especially, since it can play any ASF
file without the "regenerating". It also supports subtitles and even
has a nice On-Screen Display, but no GUI.

XINE can play AVIs, MPEGs and DVDs. It can go full-screen, has a
playlist and although it doesn't have controls in full-screen, they can
be conveniently accessed by right-clicking anywhere in the movie to
popup a controls window.
