Actually, from what I read Borland plan to release a "free" version of Kylix
during the next few months... Also, I don't care that their IDE requires
wine. What is important is that the applications compiled are native to
Linux and DO NOT require wine. As for the price, then I'll tell you this: I
program for a living on Windows, and my decision to move from VC to Delphi
was the best one I did in the late years. The speed of development with
Delphi paid for the product itself many many times. I think Delphi is the
only true RAD tool... Nothing else I've seen comes close to it. So for me
the choise is simple: Either develop on Linux with Kylix, or not develop on
Linux at all. While I (probably) can afford making my application
multi-platform (Win32 + Linux), I surely cannot afford moving to Linux
entirely.
I think the hype is directed not to open-source programmers, but to Windows
programmers (like me), who would like to develop for Linux too. I didn't
have time to play with it yet, but I plan to. I'll take one of my smaller
not too Win32-specific programs, and see how easy it can be ported to Linux.
If I'm satisfied, I'm going to shell out those $1000...
Haim.
