By the way (and I assume you already know this), this "append" feature is
available on Linux (on ext2 filesystems, at least). See chattr(1).
Quite annoyingly, however, only the superuser can modify this attribute.
Apropos chattr, I find its A attribute (don't modify atime) quite interesting.
I wonder why distributions don't set it on files in /lib, /bin, /usr/bin,
and so on. It seems such a waste to write(!) to disk every time a command
is used, even if that executable is already cached in memory...
