Unless I'm mistaken, the kernel 2.2 are available on the 2nd CD in RH 7.1 
(don't think it's available on RH 7.2).

As far as uptime on a very busy machine (mainly acting as the KDE ftp server 
at trolltech) - that machine with kernel 2.4.7 [I think] got more then 100 
days uptime.

On the server side it's a bit problematic if you use your redhat + binary 
only modules from various vendors who ceased to support kernel 2.2 (I think 
Maya server farm modules are not available for kernel 2.2.x any more)

As for workstation - kernel 2.2 specially if using X + 3D is out of question. 
No DRI, no full AGP, and try to run any nvidia module with it...
