Re: pppd on an old 386; /var/log/messages; new!

I had an interesting problem connecting my not so old box (AMD K6-2) to
bezeqint a while ago. The modem was dialing succesfully but some of the
dialups didn't want to authenticate me cleartext (showing gybrish after the
Login: request, or not at all), besides the Jerusalem one, which was working
with both cleartext and CHAP. I was totally clueless, to why Linux was
refusing to work while Windows98 did.
I'l repeat this:
The connection was alright, pppd would just exit after several attempts to
negotiate on CHAP. and cleartext just didn't work ( I still don't know
whether the cleartext not working is their fault). I have a PCI USR Sportster
33.6 x2 modem. I ended up solving it by a. using stty to set correct line
speed and some other options (don't remember by now) b. digging through all
of the manual and changing the init-string to AT&F1 which is, if I remember
right some sort of scheme of error-correction. Things worked flawlessly after
this.
Bottom line: check stty, setserial, and try various init-strings. also, try
switching modems and see if it keeps failing. I remember some buzz regarding
UARTs back in the board days. This might be a problem as well in an old
machine (even thought I don't remember any details by now)
