you might try running the sound recorder using 'esddsp'.
run 'esddsp --help' fr usge instructions. basically, you run:
esddsp grecord
esddsp tries to 'catch' access to the sound device(s) and redirect them to
a running copy of 'esd'. i works for various applications.
