What 'smbd' command is being run?
Maybe there is some script that runs 'smbd' and /usr/sbin is in the PATH
before /usr/local/sbin (or whatever).
Maybe you should simply add an explicit path to an 'smbd' command.
The same applies for nmbd, of course.
