Is he running XFree86 4.0?
XFree86 4.0 has Plug&Play capabilities to query most newer monitors
for their supported resolutions.
Otherwise, he should probably figure out the Hsync/Vsync etc. numbers
from his monitor's manual. If not available, search the net for
modelines, or try playing with 'xvidtune'.
