I don't know about Bandwidth Control. However, several nice Linux
solutions were released recently, that resolve the main drawback of
SmoothWall - iptables support (which requires kernel 2.4, and
SmoothWall is based on 2.2...). On the other hand, most of these
solutions don't have any GUI.
I listed these solutions a few weeks ago, and asked your opinion about
them. Except for one that reported about his positive experience with
Devil-Linux, I didn't get any response.
Anyway, an important thing happended a few days ago: The leading (?)
iptables GUI, "Firewall-Builder", added support for "floppyfw", which
is one of the distributions that I listed. You still need to run it
from another Linux (e.g. RH, Mandrake), but I think that it is a Good
Thing (for security), and that this combination can build a good
replacement for Smoothwall.
I want to list the various distros again, hoping that there will be
somebody else with any experience with them:
Devil-Linux http://www.devil-linux.org
Astaro Security Linux http://www.astaro.org
Sentry Firewall http://www.sentryfirewall.com
Shorewall http://shorewall.sourceforge.net
Gibraltar http://www.vianova.at/products/gibraltar
floppyfw-1.9.11 http://www.zelow.no/floppyfw
Start Up Linux http://startuplinux.com
Note: When I mention "floppyfw", it doesn't refer to its stable
version, which is based on 2.2, but to its devel version (1.9.11).
