This is especially true for companies which make hardware: their proprietary
versions of Unix are evolving slower than Linux, so people started asking -
why do I need to pay for Tru64/Solaris/HPUX/Irix/AIX/whatever when I can
have Linux for free? And hardware companies started asking themselves why
they should invest a lot of money and manpower to develop their own Unix
clone, when Linux, *BSD, and so on are available for free?
I just hope that the diversity in Unix-running hardware platforms that we
had 10-5 years ago doesn't dwindle... Unfortunately, there are already signs
of exactly that happening, and Intel (and its clones) are gaining ground.

Besides the fact (that someone already mentioned) that Netscape didn't
exist 10 years ago (if I remember correctly, nobody even heard of
HTML until a year later), why do you think that it is too late now? And too
late for what? If you mean too late for Linux to dominate, look at what
happened to Linux in England - Linux has always supported English. Do you think
this made Linux more popular in England than Windows is? :)
