Binary diff and X color resolution

Hey gang, two unrelated questions squished to one, in the best of the
Zadka tradition.

a. how does one create a diff and patch of a binary data file? GNU diff
only supports text.

b. I have a few oldie apps that insist my Xserver should run in 8-bit
pseudo color mode, which ofcourse I don't (24 bits ofcourse). is there a
wrapper or some way to fool it? Xnest maybe?
