1) Are your modem being listed as expected by setserial -ga /dev/ttyS? ? 2) Can you get to your ISP with minicom? As far as I remember when I set up a PPP connection, "Connect script failed" is an indication for chat problems. This can be observed when using minicom. 3) Permissions problem? Just to isolate this one you should first try making the connection as root. 4) Next you should enable ppp debug information and look for any suspicious signs. 5) You might keep debug the problem the way you already started: run the same commands on the good machine and on the bad one and look for the differences. 6) I wouldn't suspect the CPU since no other part of the installation has any indications for this. Does RH6.1 compiled specifically for 586? 7) You might consider be advised by the PPP-HOWTO as well.

hey list,I have just installed and configured my old 386 as linux firewall/router for my network. All went well, i configured the pppd (i'm using a modem) like i do every time, and ran the pppd. For some unkown reasone the pppd failed. The /var/log/messages only shows "Connect script failed."I had the same configuration (pppd configuration) in another computer and there it didnt fail. I researched a bit in the subject and i compered the two computers i have (the one that works and the 386). What i found is that they are the same and what differes them is the CPU speed, 386 vs Pentuim 1.I dont know if this is right, but i think that my problem is the CPU. Please correct me if i'm wrong.I use RedHat 6.1. I'm trying to solve this problem for some days now, but no luck. I address this mailing list for help cause frenkly i'm out of ideas.thanks,--Ami Bizamcher.
