A slaight modification to this advice:
The main problem with those bombastic installers is that they tend to
create a big ram disk for the installation, and thus require 32MB or even
more for the instllation. Thus temporarily ading memory is probably what
is required.
That is not to say that the CPU doesn't work hard on the instllation:
extracting many compressed packages takes time. I believe that last time I
installed on an 486 the computer's CPU was the limiting factor,
However, keep in mind that the distros install some slightly different
packages for diffeent CPUs (kernel, redhat adds glibc).
