do you mean the directory where mail gets delivered, or the directory
where interactive sessions check for mail? what is your mailer, and what
is the expected effect?

Is it the mail for the ISP users? I do sugest you build a propper POP
toaster with maildirs rather than /var/spool/mail mboxes, you will be
able to have better control and give better services to your users, not
to mention better security . I have built several such POP toasters
using Qmail, it's very effective for up to tens of thousands of users
from a single machine, and quite scalable.
