actually, according to redhat's documentation (of how to install a new
kernel from their RPMs), one should NOT upgrade the kernel, but rather
install it, to avoid removal of the previous kernel. this allows you to
verify that the new kernel works ok, while still being able to boot to
the older kernel if the new one cannot boot your machine into a working
condition.
