What do you mean 'at will'? If you mean, the moment a new kernel
comes out, then you have to use only very common hardware.
I think many rarely used drivers that are built in to 2.4.7
do not work well. I even ran (non-intentionally) into some
that do not compile.

I do not think all closed source things are evil. Of course
I would rather have the source, but I e.g. do not know of
many motherboards that come with an open-source BIOS, yet
very few people complain (maybe because with linux one almost
never uses the BIOS). Do anyone have the source to all the
software inside their printers, monitors, etc. ?
And do not think this can't be useful: I am an administrator
of a few tens of Linux machines, all same hardware and monitors,
and I would have liked it very much to be able to perfectly
tune one monitor in all the resolutions I want, and magically
tune all the others through software. But I don't think it's
possible. If I had the sources to their ROMs (assuming they
are EEPROMs), I could easily write to them software that
will allow to program them from the PC ,just like the way DDC works.
And I admit I am lazy, and havn't read the specs of DDC.

Yes, I have seen these. As I said, too expensive for me.

Thanks anyway.
