I can't speak for Eran, but I occasionally use raw partition images in the
following scenario:
1) Security auditing: Following a compromise, it will most likely be required
for one to analyze the attack conducted on a particular system.
I find it easier and safer to deal with raw images when they are mounted
under the ro and noexec options. This cannot be done when using a compressed
archive of one's '/' filesystem hierarchy.
I'm sure there are other reasons to use raw images, I simply can't think
of any right now.
