I use lirc with a remote control of a bttv-based card (AVerMedia).
No bttv patching is required for 2.4 kernels (as opposed to 2.2
kernels). Simply grab the latest lirc version, unpack it, run
/configure, pick your card from the menu, make, make install and you're done.
Oh, and you might need to copy the file from remotes/YOUR_CARD/..
to /etc/lircd.conf (and lircmd.conf is for the mouse emulation, if
you wish to mess with it).
Currently I use it succesfully with XMMS, Noatun, xawtv and XINE (via
irxevent - an X event "emulator").
