Yes, problem with some ISP lines blocked the mail server access...
Anyway, to you problem:
1. Upgrade to at least XFree 4.0.3 - there were some big memory leaks on
XFree 4.0.1 if I remember correctly...
2. Remove any of the "GLX", "DRI", "GLCore" lines from the XF86Config lines
(in case of RH 7.0 or 7.1 - XF86Config-4 file)
Doing test if X work is not with startx command, but simply with X command
(yes, big X) - this way it only loads the core parts and nothing more - and
shows you a gray screen with the X cursor. If that shows - then your X is
basically OK.
