The MTU issue of ADSL installations

Hi everyone,
Ever since Bezeq started their ADSL pilot and later the commercial
service, the question of seting the MaxMTU in the client hosts and in more
complex network archtecture (in the ADSL environment) puzeled us. This was
reflected in the ADSL howto , which give a working solution witout a
proper explanation. Lately I have access to an ADSL setup with management
access to both client and server sides. I made extensive tests and my
conclusions are:
1) In proper installed network (client and server side) the ADSL behaves
normaly and there is no need to do any changes to the default MTU in any
host. This is true even for networks that use masquerading to connect more
than one host with a single ADSL link.
2) In complex network architectures changes to the default MTU may improve
performance.

I have writen a detailed document which may be found in:
http://damyen.technion.ac.il/~dani/adsl-mtu.txt

I hope this will conclude the issue, and maybe help those running ADSL
service improve their networks.

Dani
