Another possibility is used by the NANOG (North American Network Operator
Group) mailing-list I subscribe to. This mailing list has two interfaces -
one of them is read-only (if you subscribe to that list, you cannot post)
and the second allows you to post. New users are recommended to subscribe
to the read-only one.
I've been subscribed to the NANOG mailing list for a few months, and never
posted anything because posting will require me to switch mailing-lists, a
non-trivial effort which I will presumably do only when I have something
*really* important to write, and not some silly "me too!" reply (like I'm
doing now).
Of course, I'm not saying their method is perfect - it's far from perfect.
After someone switches to the post-enabled mailing list it's very easy for
them to post more messages - and some of them do without thinking twice,
keeping that mailing list full of crap around the gems I occasionally
can find there (such as a few day advanced notice from Paul Vixie himself
about the latest Bind security hole, and this week an advance notice that
rbl.maps.vix.com is being renamed and will no longer work in May).
