It's improving, both in CVS versions of aviplay (in Debian Sid, btw)
and mplayer.

For AVI files, it would do it only if you didn't download completely.
mplayer allows you to play incomplete AVIs without reindexing, but
without the option to rewind / fast-forward.
For ASF files, aviplay always regenerates indexes, while mplayer
assumes all ASF blocks are equally sized and plays them right away,
with rewind / fast-forward.
