Wouldn't it be wise to upload/download between two machines connected
to ADSL ? It will be the ultimate test.

Yes, check the up/down link separately.
for d/l use an FTP from your local ISP. If you can upload to a local
server large files thats good. Otherwise, find somewhere you can d/l large
files.
It is important for the files to be large so the tcp passed the slow start
and reaches the steady state, and this for multiple concurent file.
