Directory output garbage

A friend encountered the following problem, I wonder
if any of you can offer a solution.

Hi
I've got this problem. i'm working on a linux machine (RH 7.1), and
since a few days ago, my root directory looks like this:

[root@localhost /]# ls

X6Owab 0ThQ40 6hQh4Y boVtrH fpfoWM iXwwAn MjQIa4 PZ56Xy TrdMW8
X7OYDe 0xblHM 6KyKll boXDgn ftF4nl J36TcX mnt Q96s1P TSrZDd
xb02Pe 16hMXe 6sGS7z bS3dMa FySGJN j5TIjf MQ4iOx QA11wY tsS1bP
XbSpwt 187fV9 6Xo4S9 bUklid fytsfR j9w1TS muBqml QaJahC tt56J9
xcRT0B

and so on....

The machine functions ok, but sometimes it can't boot and freezes
after this boot message: "KSwapd 1.8".

are the two problems connected? is there anything to be done besides
formatting and resinstalling?
