[ PPP log tells us `script failed' + minicom has some unexplained characters popping in ] ==> [ there is a problem with the serial device which is not PPP related ] ? Is there a way for you to try and make a serial connection to another machine (using mgetty or something similar)? Perhaps set up some fax tool (mgetty?) and try to send a fax to one of the company fax machines? You might need to explore in the modem docs/web what does the jumper Win/no_Win does; and perhaps install the isapnp tools, testing them with the jumper set to each position. You should also look for the setserial script or command and examine it. Does the bios of the 586 announces that it has found/configured a PNP device? Are you sure there is no hint in the Modem-HOWTO?
