No you don't. WHat you need is PPP to run on the line and assign an IP
address to you. DHCP is a completly unrelated cprotocol that also assign
addreses but on Ethernet (and other) lines.
Basically, if you know (or read) how to set up your machine to answer
the modem and run mgetty on the serial line, all you need is to
configure the machine to answer the modem and run pppd on the serial
line - with the apropriate flags and options. As has been mentioned
there are a lot of stuff about this on the net and google is your friend.
