Help about faulty filesystem

For some reason the message was sent to me- and not (I suppose) to the
mailing list-so I sent it again. Forgive me if it did make to the list
first
time.

The system in trouble is based on SuSE 6.1 .
A third IDE HD was added as hdc- there were already other two--and
linux was on the second one, as hdb1- to hdb3.
The mount procedure went wrong (long story) and now the machine boots
itself only in "maintenance mode", while it recognizes only hdb3
(hence no swap found).

The kernel reports some lenghty message, but I was only able to read the

following (as the screen rolls on, without control):
"...which requiere relocation, or one part of the inode table which must

be moved. You may wish to try running e2fsck with the -b 8139 option
first.
The problem may be only with the primary group descriptor, and the
backup
descriptor may be OK.
/dev/hdc: Block bitmap for group 076 is not in group (block 524288).
/dev/hdc: UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY; RUN fsck MANUALLY."

e2fsck -b ... did not work.
I surely want to try to save the filesystem- as installing SuSE 6.1 is a

little tedious.
Can someone help- even with a pointer to some stuff about salvaging
filesystems by the metod suggested by the system ?
I could not find something about this on the SuSE site- neither on a
non-comprehensive search on "SuSE Unleashed" book.

Thanks
Edy
