if it doesnt work, although you're using the correct flags, there are
several things you can do:
* remoev ALL temporary files (config.log, config.cache, config.this and
config.that). anything at all, and then try again.
* RTFS - it's just a shell script. find out why it fails and fix it (or,
more likely, find out what options it expects and how to give them to
it).
the following are not particularly recommended, but have been known to
work occasionally. YMMV.
* use the power of symbolic links to give the configure script the
answer it expects.
* if all else fails, comment out those checks that fail from the
script and add the appropriate flags to the Makefile, by hand.
