How about PPC? It's a major enough platform to have caught the 
attention of most major distros (Debian,SuSE,Mandrake), and has a few 
small ones all its own. That's the one I'm using at home. I think 
your point should be changed to "Linux has helped eliminate expensive 
proprietary solutions and allowed people to use home-end machines for 
high-end uses". That doesn't sound too bad...
