Try building it statically then.

Yet, GNOME applications will try to connect to the ESD server. Try
running GNOME Control Center (gnomecc) and disabling "Enable sound
server startup" (in the Multimedia -> Sound screen).
Also, since it's ESD via TCP, do you maybe run a firewall configuration
which could've blocked access to port 16001?
