VM problem: hdd thrash + hang

Hi,
Once in a while, typically in high-load situations, my linux PC gets into
a state where it constantly thrashes the HD (probably swapping) and no user
application runs properly. All local interaction hangs. ping from remote
works just fine, but other TCP services accept the connection but do not
send any text. The only thing left for me to do is to manually reset the PC.

Also, I get the following lines in syslog (All addresses changed to prevent
detection of the specific workstation involved):

Jul 6 04:50:38 mypc proftpd[810]: mypc.mydomain - Error: unable to accept an incoming connection (Connection reset by peer)
Jul 6 04:57:38 mypc kernel: VM: killing process master
Jul 6 05:03:47 mypc proftpd[810]: mypc.mydomain - Error: unable to accept an incoming connection (Connection reset by peer)
Jul 6 05:06:22 mypc kernel: VM: killing process hlds_run
Jul 6 05:06:39 mypc proftpd[3693]: mypc.mydomain (remote.pc[1.2.3.4]) - FTP session closed.
Jul 6 05:23:06 mypc kernel: VM: killing process kdeinit
Jul 6 05:37:00 mypc kernel: VM: killing process vmware-nmbd
Jul 6 05:41:02 mypc kernel: VM: killing process sshd
Jul 6 05:56:12 mypc kernel: VM: killing process xfs
..

What can be causeing these problems, and how can I prevent this.
