double-TAB in gnome-term?

something weird, donno how it happend, but pressing tab in a gnome-term
session sends the tty's application two tabs. makes for screwy
commandline completion, in vi I must backspace once after tab to get the
indent right... this does not happen in xterm or Eterm or the console,
and is shell and application independant.

anyone knows how it got that way and if there is a way to fix it?

essential BG: up-to-date Debian sid, ia32, sawmill....

Thanks.
