There's at least one O'Reilly book whose text is freely available on the web:
"Open Sources: Voices from the Open Source Revolution". (see
http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/opensources/book/toc.html - a nice Postscript
version used to be available, but I can't find it now - but I can send the
copy I have to whomever asks).
I printed out this book, read it (and was very impressed), and only after
reading it I went ahead and bought the book (I thought they deserved getting
money for their work).
I don't know what other books (if any) they let you read freely before (and
if) you decide to buy them.
