Maybe you should consider running esd (see
/usr/share/doc/esound-0.2.22/esound.ps on Redhat 7.1). This is a server
that accepts samples at various frequencies, and mixes them all to one
output stream with a sample rate that you can fix with the "-r" parameter.
Xmms can send audio to esd: I don't know about mpg123 or mpg321 (whatever
the latter is).
