3 cards on one machine... hmm, depends if they are on PCI and ISA and
all sorts of other parameters. yet it will still be probably cheaper
than a hub if you have the slots.

no needif on PCI. also I think a modern kernel can handle several NICs
on the same IRQ, there must be a faq for that too.

"all those" refers to what? embeded appliances? Ethernet chips are dirt
cheap, it's very easy to stick a few on a single board if you make the
board yourself anyway for the appliance.

well, that's just disproportional price inflation by 3COM because thew
card is made in small quantities, I don't think it should really cost
that much, but they put a hi markup on it because it's a "server
periferal". the day more people start setting up NAT machines for home
use and want those instead of hubs, the price will go down, but I doubt
we'll see that happening anytime soon.

again, depending on bus types, etc.

ofcourse no sound or screen needed on a server. sadly the regular BIOS
won't boot w/o a screen card of some sort...
turn off all the serials, and maybe even the parallel, you can connet
your printer to one of the win machines on the net as well, and save
another IRQ.
