Re: ascii code for NIS

There is no NIS in ISO-8858-9 (I checked the latest version).

There is "NEW SHEQEL SIGN" at code point hexa 20AA in Unicode/ISO-10646.

There is "NEW SHEQEL SIGN" at code point hexa A4 in Code Page 1255
(Windows Hebrew).

There is none, of course. ASCII is the "*American* Standard Code for
Information Interchange", and as such only contains characters of interest
to Americans (it also doesn't have a Pound sign, Euro sign, Yen sign, or
anything similar).

If I remember correctly (but please correct me if I'm not), ISO-8859-8
(the
ISO standard 8-bit encoding for Hebrew) also doesn't have an NIS
character.
Does the Windows Hebrew codepage have such a character? Does unicode? I
don't
know the answers to these questions.

By the way, does anybody still use that NIS sign with the Shin and Chet
combined in a clever manner? I haven't seen it used anywhere (either in
print on in handwriting) for many years...
