this should illustrate everything u would need to do -
@ IN SOA domain.com. root.domain.com. (
2001070702 ; serial
8H ; refresh
2H ; retry
1W ; expire
1D ) ; minimum
NS ns1.domain.com.
NS ns2.domain.com.
MX mail.domain.com.
TXT "dA c00l3st domain in town"
ns1 A 192.168.0.1
ns2 A 192.168.0.2
mail A 192.168.0.2
HINFO "Pentium-Pro" "Linux 2.4.3"
TXT "dA mail s3rv3r"
www CNAME ns1
i.am.so.cool A 192.168.0.3

i think the most common mistake that people make is that if u want to
specify a complete domain (as opposed to having your SOA appended to the
end) you MUST have a final period at the end.
i.e.
www -> www.domain.com
www.domain.com -> www.domain.com.domain.com
www.domain.com. -> www.domain.com
email me if you still cant get it working.
