S/PDIF out to your 5.1 Surround system more likely.
AC3 is a very specific format under S/PDIF, a surround system is not a
mere stereo and "hi-fi" is a 70s term, and you want to produce sounds
OUT of the PC and not just pass them through :-)

time I started looking at that. the next generation SBLive is out now,
called Audigy. higher resolution D/A and firewire connection at the
price of the Current SBLive line. I'm planning on using its S/PDIF
connection to harness my surround's A/D convertors and archive my Vinyl
collection. better than usinga PCI card's A/D and get a lot of humm for
free.
