I'm not too sure I understood the problem you described but I'll try :)

First, Word and Excel must be able to see the same files as microsoft
explorer can.. It's based on the same way of browsing. and let's say you
can't- you can always map the network share as a drive, let's say, N: .
(right click on network neighbourhood -> map a network drive)

About Linux, you can mount the samba filesystem using:
mount -t smbfs //compname/drivename /mountpoint
or:
smbmount //compname/drivename /mountpoint
