Actually, the barrier of entry for new software into Debian is
virtually non-existent. Once you have a package, all you need is
a developer who is willing to upload it for you ("sponsor it").
If the package meets the DFSG and the packaging policy it will
appear in Unstable in a few days, and in Testing within two weeks.
There's no one in Debian who has the power to accept or refuse well-
packaged free software. That's why you've got such an incredible
amount of useless gunk on Debian CDs; every developer wants to see
/his/ gunk in (try to count the number of barely-working MPEG
players...)
How long it takes until the solver appears in a stable release, of
course, depends only on when we will /have/ a release :)
I have no idea how it's done in Mandrake. How is it, really?
