umm, possibly the worst way of doing it, but thanks :-)
with uuencode, remember that if the file length changes, bytes may not
land on the same character boundry anymore (6 bits per char!) and more
to the point, on the same location on the line, which will look a like a
completely new file to diff. plus it inflates the file, and the diff,
and is a long slow process.
