After almost a year of complaints from the poor Pelephone users, I finally
added Pelephone support to my SendSMS, which you can find as usual in
http://nadav.harel.org.il/software/sendsms
(The new sourceforge page is not yet updated - Alon Altman may update it
later).
This version is finally numbered, 2.0 (see the comments why), and I am
asking for as many Pelephone users as possible to try out this script and
tell me whether or not it works for them. I did test it on one phone (you
can see in my emails headers it's now 2 after midnight, so even getting
one tester wasn't a simple task). But because Pelephone has a different
treatment of phones of different area codes, I'd especially want someone
with the new 056 area code to try it out and tell me if it works correctly.
By the way, for the curious, I started out by adding Pelephone support
by way of their email gateway (this part was programmed by by Constantin
Eizner and Dan Kenigsberg and tested by Tomer Cohen - thanks guys) - but
I wasn't satisfied with that solution, because it was slow (as someone
told me about the Email interface), used yet another Perl library
(Mail::Sendmail), and the local sendmail got in the way of formulating
a message looking exactly like you want (e.g., my sendmail insisted to
stick @math.technion.ac.il on the sender name).
So the current version has this email-gateway method commented out, and
instead I wrote a web-based script (i.e., automating their web form in
http://www.peletext.co.il/). Even though Pelephone's form is quite simple
(there's no need for "accounts" or "logging in" like in Orange or Cellcom),
it turned out to be harder than I expected, requiring a weird archaeological
expedition through several strata of Pelephone's sites (one of them didn't
even have a DNS entry...), until I found the "correct" layer. The entire
ordeal, including experimenting, testing, documenting, and preparing the
new version, took me 3 and a half hours. Not much for something I tried
to avoid for a whole year...
I would value any comments about the new Pelephone support.
Nadav.
