Hi,
I need more information from you to know if I can help you (and I'm
sure this information will help others to help you):
1. Which Linux did you use at the first time.
2. You said that mpg123 didn't play the mp3 file. What did it write?
3. Have you tried to use other tools to play mp3. Try for example xmms.
4. Are you using KDE? Gnome? Have you tried to use mpg123 without
loading X at all, from the text shell.
The reason I'm asking all these questions is because at least on RH7.2,
KDE(2.1.1) use some sort of sound server and therefore the device is
busy and you can't use mpg123. Regading the distortions, I think (but
I'm not sure) that this is partly because you don't have a good audio
device.
