Yes, you do. When you compile programs for a specific processor (say,
i586) it may include instructions that are illegal on older processors
(say, i486). Therefore, just recompiling the kernel is definitely not
enough.

Sure -- it's GPL. But wouldn't it be much easier to just use a distro
compiled for i386, as most distros are?
