..as long as there are no security issues with where the machine will
be installed. hence Debian would be a great choice since I believe the
latest stable is also able to install on those constraints.

note many of those new distros have bombastic install proggies, but no
real resource hogs once they boot. you may consider installing on a
pentium and transplanting  the disk to the 486.
