problems with X

  Hi,

I have had a number of complaints from different departments at
Tel-Aviv University, and I also have experienced it myself, so I want to
ask others too:

Since we started working with XFree 4 (4.0.3 or 4.1.0 or 4.0.1 or 4.0.2,
doesn't matter really), the stability of the X windows environment has
dropped dramatically. The main culprint is netscape.

Users have been restarting their X servers (if they can login from some
other place and kill it) or rebooting their machines something like 10-30
times a day.

I will give you a scenarion that creats the above mentioned behaviour, one
among many. Academic users use browsers alot, for many things, whether
it's retrieving information from databases or knowledge bases, or
listening to lectures using video on demand (realplayer), or doing any
other stuff, but in general, they are heavy brower users.

This happens with different netscape versions, mainly 4.7x.

Scenario:

Go to www.rpmfind.net

There in the input box, type whatever, for example, gcc. Press
search. When you get to the page with the gcc versions, type in the
search input box something else, for example, gcc-devel, and while
typing, press backspace. This freezes the X server.

Anyone experiencing degradation of stability with Xfree 4 ?
