RE: Is there a Linux ghost?

Hi guys,
before i start i want to point you to this site http://www.partimage.org/ which is exactly what you described, (network imaging, bzip2 compressing, UI,etc..) and it is also under the gpl 2. disclaimer: never tried it myself, but it looks reliable on first sight.

but i want to point out somethings:
ghost can compress its images.
ghost can customize the OS to make it individual, for example in windows NT it creats new seeds, etc...
The guy asked for a professional solution, not some concocted script that may or may not work.

one good point that comes to my mind in linux over ghost is that ghost network drivers are based on dos, and as such are very limited, and from experience if you don't have the same card over the network, the chances are that many computers won't be able to download an image over the network. Linux have native support for almost every driver you can think off.

All this means is that someone knowledgable enough will have to build the
"magic script" to do what you want - but even mindless drones will be able to
operate this script hundreds of times to generate replicas of the same
thing over and over again.
