glibc-2.2.2 installation problem

I need to install glibc-2.2.2 over my RH6.2 installation.
I do NOT want to upgrade my kernel to 2.4 - I just need
the later binutils/glibc/gcc for development purposes.

I searched google and found an email that said to
first install compat-glibc-6.2-2.1.3.2.i386.rpm. Did that.
Then I edited /etc/ld.so.conf and put /usr/i386-glibc21-linux/lib
in front of /usr/i486-linux-libc5/lib (the email said that, too)

I then ran ldconfig -v and hosed my system. It took me an hour
in rescue mode from the cdrom to fsck my disks, remount, chroot,
revert ld.so.conf to its original format, ldconfig (yes, linux
hung again) repeat all of the above and reboot.

I don't want to go through that again!

Can anyone help?

J.
