Re: pppd on an old 386: IRQ

Please use

    setserial -ga /dev/ttyS?

The output of a similar command might be somewhere in your logs; but why
digging for something which can be reproduced easily?

The dmesg lines you showed are only relevant during the boot process.

I guess that the 16550A belongs to the modem. Can you confirm this?

Until now we only compared the PPP config files on both systems. However there
might be some setserial config file or something to that effect. On a newer
Debian machine I would look for /etc/serial.conf. I do not know what is the
equivalent on RH6.1. In short, can you compare those files?

Does the modem a Plug And Play modem?

Can you verify that the output of

    cat /proc/interrupts

is what you would expect it to be? Actually, could you post it here?

The Modem-HOWTO and the PPP-HOWTO are of relevance to your case. Do try to search them for clues.

here are the IRQs and COMs fromt the /var/log/dmesg:

tty00 at 0x03f8 (irq = 4) is a 16450

tty01 at 0x02f8 (irq = 3) is a 16550A
