Another issue is what will koffice and other products will provide at the
time.

Whereas for me personally LyX is enough for simple word processing, and I
can use gnumeric and other programs to complement the other functions I
need. But I realise that this is not good enough for most users.

Since it is you asking this question, I understand that you don't have
high enough hopes of KOffice in the near future.

But the number of companies who will be forced to upgrade to office XP (or
compatible) is large enough. If there is a good enough product ready at
that time, then it might work.
