While I don't know if this rumour is true, it is highly plausible,
given that the core NT development team consisted of VMS people
(don't recall the names at the moment).
When I learned a bit or two about telephony I thought I found the
right meaning of NT: in telephony, it means "Network Termination".
Sounds about right.
