well, every machine I EVER install, be it a workstation in a secure LAN,
a firewall or a server, I never install telnetd anymore, infact I
through out inetd altogether, but sshd is your friend (if you avoid the
versions with the holes...)
if you have ANY service running, like a web or SMTP server, try and
telnet to it. if it creates the TCP connection and answers you,
userspace is not dead, and there's a different problem.
another annoyance - my screen doesn't always turn on when the the sync
returns. I need to turn it off and on again - could that me all? try
ctrl-alt-F1 and then ctrl-alt-del. maybe you can do a blind reboot and
save your data. (use ReiserFS, anyway)

well, you don't really need APM unless you have a laptop. you don't need
it for the screen saver either.
in any case, kernels in 2.4 sometimes freeze. try a newer version, no
Mandrake patches.
