8x150kbps=300*4=1200 kbps.

i don't know which harddisk you use and what is its seek/read/write speeds,
your writer has ~8M buffer.
after it begins the operation at x8 it probably has an underrun, and its
happening very quicly, so that cdrecord logging doesn't show it.
try burning at x4 and it maybe will work.

moreover 1200k per second for the CDRW and probably the same speed for the
filling of the buffer is not very easy for the CPU (it's an
emulation of SCSI so it loads the processor).

i would simply dedicate it an IDE cable, this is the best thing.
another thing:

i don't know exactly the type of your harddisk, and the accessing modes
of your harddisk, but i bet the motherboard does not support new UDMA modes,
so there's probably another bottleneck in the harddisk
