RE: How to slow down noisy CDROM

--- snap ---

1. Playing music CD and MP3 (data) CD is different. The format ("file system
?") is
different. The player play the music cd without any software, although one
can find
software that sapmle the music and play it (with visual effects ...).
The reason is is important is the "fragmentation". Music is linear
reading while
data may require access to the "FAT" equivalent table. Of course, it
depend on the
  driver/kernal smartness.
2. The CD cache (and SCSI type can imporve with disconnect option) is highly
effective.
A small cache result in many accesses to the media which can reduce
computer speed
  and make noise.
3. When CD accelerated to about x16 a problem then random access became a
major problem -
moving between tracks needed a bigger acceleration (say, instead of
500-2000 RPMS now
it is 4000-14000) so variable speed was introduced. This way proffesional
CD can give
better random access benchmarks then normal, althogh the maximal speed is
the same.
  (They have stronger engine ;).

--- snap ---
I think, anyhow.
