In case you have MS-Win I guess you were able to have your modem operating
with it, haven't you?
Do post the output of
setserial -ga /dev/ttyS[0-4]
setserial is controlled either by command line or config file. On my Debian
machine the config file is /etc/serial.conf. Do post yours.
Another thing I believe worth posting is the output of
zgrep -B2 -A4 'Serial driver' /var/log/syslog_with_boot_messages
where syslog_with_boot_messages is the file that contain the boot messages.
Have you other serial devices, perhaps internal, beside your modem?
Were you using minicom as root?
My system has minicom config files in /etc/mini*. Are you able to find
these files on your system?
Other things you might want considering is the Modem-HOWTO, including
following its references, and trying to get help from setserial manpage.
I am aware to the fact that these are long and might be hard to understand.
Still, these are one of your best sources for getting help.
Are you the one with the same problem from Bar Ilan install party?
If so, what was the solution for the power on problem?
