Then it seems that this is not a kde problem, but an X server problem,
right?
does the X server continue to run?
does 'xinit /usr/X11R6/bin/xterm' work? this bypasses most of the X client
init scripts.
It could be either a problem with the X server, or with the xinit scripts
(which are quite complex with mandrake 7.2, and surely haven't gotten any
simpler). Try follow things from /etc/X11/Xsession
