I am no samba expert, but when our admins upgraded an NT server to a
W2K one without telling anybody, I started getting those. I inquired,
and was told that W2K requires username, workgroup, and password in
authentication, while NT needs username and password only.

On my RH7.0 + updates:
$ rpm -qa | grep samba
samba-2.0.8-1.7
samba-common-2.0.8-1.7
samba-client-2.0.8-1.7
