You should see a message like this:
 "Dec  2 00:07:04 banjo kernel: lp0 at 0x0378, (polling)"
in /var/log/messages? If not, you might have an IRQ or address conflict.
Check to see what other messages you get at boot time. Printer inititali-
zation is usually done just before sound card initialization in the 
boot sequence.
