I meant the ps_getty package in general, tried both getty and
uugetty to no avail.

And what right line is this? Using uugetty I tried to remove the
altlock directive and then the altline directive didn't work. Then I
switched to getty which I though would not use locking on the modem
device, no luck either. I even tried kill -9 <uu/getty id>; pppscript in
hope that ppp would lock the line before uu/getty was respawned but
either it was too fast or too slow (and anyway there must be a better
way than that!).
Have you tried using uugetty? Does it work in your site? If so, can
you supply me with your conf.uugetty.*. Messages with "There is a
way!" with no additional information serves only to annoy.

Read it, tried it, didn't work.
