Is this the only partition on its disk?  If so then maybe it is a
simple SCSI-related problem.

Also, what about trying to mount it as a simple msdos filesystem
(read-only, so the VFAT hidden directory entries are not lost), to see
if the problems are related to linux' VFAT code?
