Linus had some pre-decisions as to where features should be added (I 
don't know if he documented it anywhere, though). He gave himself a mark, 
that SMP support should be for version 2.0. the problem is that SMP is 
still far from usable (not to mention perfect) and 2.0 is buggyer than a 
few of the versions that came before it, I suppose Linus just had the 
plain tickets to Argentina already bought for this wednesday, so he 
rushed it... it is no excuse to name it 2.0 yet... a lot of people just 
pressed him to the wall...

Hell, whatever were his reasons, I don't blame him... he is doing an 
amazing job, and the fact he does it almost comlpetly alone is even MORE 
amazing.
