Well ... I have 486sx/25 with 8Mb. And I compile kernels, even 
if that takes some time ...
About hour for 1.3.20, and about 2 hours for pre2.0.4. 
Now about X ... it takes a little more that for _normal_ computers,
but Emacs loads 1.5 min, Netscape 2.5 min
That's why I'm using Joe and not Emacs (btw, Joe remembers me old, good
Borland's WordStar-like editor), and having 6 consoles isn't too bad.
