Hardware questions

Hi,

Not purely a linux question, but the system will be running only linux,
so I thought it's best to consult the linux experts as well.
Please E-mail me personally, to avoid plugging the list with off-topic
hardware info. I'll summarize the responses and send the summary to the
list.

I'm going to upgrade my system (at long last).
It's currently a 486DX/4-100, with 2.6GB on 3HD (1 SCSI, 2 IDE).
I'd like to get a new MotherBoard and CPU, and a reasonable graphic card
(I currently have cirrus logic, which is junk), and keep the rest. Use
the old MB, with one IDE disk, surplus controllers and such, to build an
inferior system (which will naturally run an inferior OS, not to be
explicitly named ;-) )
Oh yeah - I want it to be fast (P200 or equiv.), but I don't want to
mortgage my house for a 4-cpu Tian MotherBoard with Matrox Millenium...

Questions are:

1. Are the Intel integrated MBoards any good? I heard about the Endevour
board, with all the controllers, ATI mach 64 and SB built in, which
leaves a lot of free slots, and costs less than the sum of its
components.

2. How about the alternative to Intel - Cyrix/686 ? I understand it's a
bit cheaper than the P200, with comparable performance. How stable is it
with linux? Compatibility problems? Anyone has personal experience with
it?

3. My current SCSI controller is adaptec 1542 (I currently don't have
PCI slots). Is it worthwile switching to a PCI controller? How much will
I gain in performance?

Thanks for your time,

Tuvik
