I'll tell you what you CAN do, though... the Ministry of science is
sometimes on the lookout for interesting initiatives and projects. Right
now I am (sorta) involved in the Harvest project, as proposed by Bar-Ilan
U. Suggesting projects had a deadline, and I guess there is a certain
quota of projects per year. For instance: as an Amuta we can offer to
develop ready-made platform of Information servers for schools, both as
Internet and intranet servers, already filled with some info, and tools to
add into the database and all. I know matach are contemplating such a
project for next year, but as open-minded as they are, they are also very
conservative, as their software is installed on school netware servers
around the country, but they don't develop groupware which I think is
important in schools.
If the Linux society decides to take on itself such a project, it could
mean a budget of $50k - $100k. Enough to buy a few PCs, and other hardware
specific needs for the project, and maybe hiring an Information specialist
etc. best case: a few spinoffs will start, we invite Linux Torvalds over
and write it down as "needed for the project" :-) and achieve world fame.
If the readers here think they are up to it, and want to donate hours for
minimal payment (the funds CAN be used for salaries), then we can go ahead
and try such a venture.
otherwise, like Harvey said, and I before him, the membership fees payed
by 30 people, won't even cover the accountant's bill. a society needs some
plans of work, not some paper to wave so they have a chance of MAYBE
accepting consignations at book stores.
