Re: PPP :) it's working ...
you should settle on tranport method before chosing cnew or INN
(BTW some versions of slakware installl both by defualt - if this is the
case eith you remove *both* & install the one you want )
you should ideally have a UUCP over TCP connection
(with a 24 hours connected having an MX record for your site
and forwarding your mail to UUCP
as this will enable you to run a script *on your side* when the connection
goes up
(and choose cheap hours for news tranfer - if this is a factor
posssible with UUCP -as uucp has grades with which could pull say only
mail or mail first or ...) which will pull your news ( wich may be easily &
standrdly compressed(preferebly with gzip) ( even though it is possible to
do it over an NNTP connect too -but with mods to both server sides ...)
[starting to llok like Harvey's lisp here :-)] & mail when the connection
goes up
this will save the problem
of 1)your mail piling up in the of your friendly host at HUJI
(apt to cause overload - or large retry times - depend on which SW the host
is running ( it may cause nither - also depending on your mail volume
but better not to irritate you benefactor ... )
2) will prevent the need for you to connect up at the right the queue is
being run ( for both mail & news - not neccerlly the same time )
this will of course mean you don't have to make a long phone call & just
wait for stuff to start flowing
[even though an automatic queue run may be possible to setup - as far as
I I know how PPP things are done at HUJI - that won't be too easy - of
course I may be wrong]
Enjoy,
Rafi (newsadmin@openu )
[sorry I don't have time to give more advice - but that should be enough
for you to get going in the right direction ...]
P.S. sorry to be a party-spoiler - but MACHBA sites aren't allowed to feed
news to non paying sites ( it does cost money to get new to Israel BTW
... )
so pls get you friend at HUJI - who is planning this newsfeed to clear
things with Hank - before you get him into trouble... :-(
P.P.S. it is of course possible to use standard SMTP/NNTP but
1)it has the problems stated above - which are not that trivial to solve
(depending for of course :-)
2)it will save a lot of connection time/bandwidth - to have the news
compressed rather that standard NNTP ( this goes for a 24 hour connection too
BTW)
