I'm pretty new to Linux myself (well, not quite a neophyte as you),
but been doing quite some reading these last few weeks.
"Linux Unleashed" is a good book (as is all the Unleashed series),
especially if you have never worked with any UN*X. I find it useful,
although it starts from square one. Make sure to buy the Second
Edition (which includes Slackware 3.0 CD).
The book costs 284 NIS in Bug, and 190 NIS in Kohl Zev (guess where I
do all my shopping :^)
There's two Kohl Zev stores in Jerusalem & one in Tel-Aviv (Green
Shop). I am not related to this chain in any way, I just believe in
buying from those who offer better deals (which means I practically
boycott BUG).
A second book which I find even better, especially for experienced PC
users new to Linux, is the "Linux System Administrator's Survival
Guide", which is more about configuring and setting the system than
about using it. Much recommended. The prices for this book are the
same as for the previous one (in both chains; at least they're
consistent).
BTW, I have two Linux CD's, Slackware 2.2 (came with "Lx Unleashed
v.1") & Slackware 3.0 (came with "Lx SA Survival Guide") which I don't
need and will gladly send to a BEGINNER who could REALLY use it and
doesn't plan on buying the books.
Good Luck,
