All (!!!) ATAPI IDE CD-ROM drives, including double and quad speed ones are
supported by new (1.2.X) kernels. I have mitsumi-4x and it works just fine.

You are right. Teac 55a connects to the Sound Bluster MCD and have a Panasonic
*ELECTRIC*, but a *PROPRIETARY* programming interface. So it needs special
support for such drives in Linux. A group of enthusiasts works on it
(I think that Eberhand Moenkeberg is responsible for that - see 
linux/drivers/block/README.* files in the new kernels)
