Adaptec 1542CF problem

I've got a year old IBM 1GB SCSI disk which I've recently designated for
some UNIX flavour. At first I've tried to install SolarisX86 on it and
then DebianLinux 1.1. However whenever some heavy duty operation on the
disk would start the system would hang up on me (in linux I would get
some message about aha1542 reset failed). After a lot of trials and
errors including sending the disk and the controller to a lab (they found
nothing ofcourse), I've finally found that by enabling disconnection in
the adaptec disk configuration I managed to get the disk up and running.

What I've been wondering is what this means. How does it affect the disk
performance? The HOWTO's don't mention this parameter and the manual
which comes with the controller is worse than incomplete (I've seen more
informative sale ads).
