Meeting and location

Hi, everyone.

A few things.

First, Ariel Cohen from Sela has volunteered a location for us to meet
in. I still have to supply details, but it looks as if that issue
is pretty much closed. They will also probably be able to provide us
with the proper rooms.

The second thing is to confirm the meeting taking place on Friday morning,
Tel-Aviv area. From experience, I can say that non-Friday meetings hosted
much less people, as it is very problematic for people to arrive after
work. I will try to organize it as early as possible, to allow all people
without cars to return before the buses die out. I would not call
so urgently, but Jonathan will only be able to attend if we do
it quickly (miluim).

The third thing is to comment about the recent discussion regarding
lurkers taking place in the list.

One of the aims of our group, is to support these lurkers. If 180 people
are interested enough in our conversations to lurk, I find that very
flattering. I also want to encourage any sceptic lurker that the list,
as it is, in my opinion, should remain exactly as it is right now REGARDLESS
of any amuta business we might wish to conduct.

Regarding Ira and Moshe's discussion (btw, Moshe has relinquished his
position as a lurker ;-) It's a bit paradoxial). Some people in this
list, such as Gilad, who consist of Moshe's "Group A", indeed fit
into the category of active Linux enthusiasts. I don't agree to
Moshe's claim that trying to recruit Group B people into Group A
is paradoxial - it's called "conversion" and I personally do it
all the time. I also agree that anyone who does not wish to vote
on the amuta may do so and stay morally sound, since the list's
purpose is to provide technical support for these people (as stated
above). Like Moshe says, they might not be interested in advancing
Linux at all, but only with the technical problems in their companies,
which is fine.

I think we should accept, therefore, that Linux-IL is made of two groups.
The first, the activists, could probably form an Amuta and go on doing
all the regular activities such as shows, installation parties, etc.
The second, the lurkers, would simply lurk.

I think that most of this discussion originates from the fact that
23 out of ~180 people voted, and that surprised many of us who thought
there are many more activists. But again, I think us activists can pat
ourselves on the back if we manage to create enough interest.

Having said that, I appeal to ALL linux-il members, activists and
lurkers alike, to show up at the meeting, even if they are not interested
in the amuta saga. I'd like to remind everyone that these meetings
also have a social function, not to mention an educational one. Personally,
the meeting I liked most was the TAU one, in which MANY people arrived,
and we talked and joked and discussed Linux in general. So please make
the effort and show up. You will not regret the lost time.

I'll be mailing tomorrow as to the exact time and place.
