I've done it too and Debian has two /important/ advantages over rpm.
 - live upgrading (Red Hat recommends using single-user mode which is
   not acceptable when upgrading a production server)
 - Red Hat isn't careful enough about the files in /etc and overwrote
   at least a half-dozen that I had configured for the system - again
   this is completely unacceptable (at least Red Hat saved backups!).

I won't comment on dselect exept to say that things have changed in
version 1.2.5 and to be fair we should evaluate it before continuing
the discussion.
