A "club" has no official standing (like a mailing list). Again, from
experience in helping to organize the show, it has been very difficult
to convince companies we're serious. And rightfully so. If we come
into a bookstore and ask for consignation (return unsold books), who
says we won't run away with those books?

;-) You're forgetting a tiny little detail. HP is a company that advertises,
sells, and otherwise pushes its products. Thus, HP users don't NEED an
amuta - they already have a company doing it for them...

Hmph. The mailing list has nothing to do with the amuta. The amuta is
just a legal standing place for us to be in. As far as I'm concerned,
the mailing list will be freely open just like it is now. There is
no contradiction to everything you say.

Very wrong. From experience (I run a BBS for just these kind of users),
technology-savvy people love to try out new things. I know I personally
"converted" countless DOS users to at least try out Linux.

Read below.

Yes, those too. You're forgetting one thing. The fact that Linux support
and software can be reached through the net doesn't mean a thing. Who
but Linux-il would work for mirrors of FTP sites? Who would support and
develop local issues (Hebrew)? It's also much better for new users to
have a local community of expert users than to send a message to
comp.os.linux.*.

NON-PROFIT is for several reasons. First, we are NOT a business. None of
us is spending time on Linux-IL as an employee (except the maintainers).
Becoming a business would mean problems with money, Mas Hachnasa, and other
ugly commercial-related things. And the most important thing is this:
I want to remind you that we really are not in this for the money (most
of us). Personally, I just want to see Linux penetrate and be used more
and more. I think we can acheive this best by being official. But we're
NOT looking to profit from this. You're welcome to start your own company,
but this has nothing to do with Linux-IL
