A fucked up swap space maybe? but it is pretty likely this is a memory

Compiling something big (like the kernel) is an excellent test because it
is such a memory hug. if you have a memory problem you will get something
like: "gcc internal error" somewhere during the make and chances are you
can reproduce it for the tech people.
