There is no problem with Linux and large (>= 1024) IDE drives.
Here is a quote from an addition to the Large IDE mini-Howto:
---- Quote ----
Note: Kernels newer than 1.1.40 do not have any problem using large
IDE drives (IDE drives with over 1024 cylinders). However, many distributions
still use older kernels for their installation disks, so this might be
relevant.

The only problem you may face is if your computer is not a 586.
Some 486 (most?) and older computers have a problem that prevents DOS (or
win95) from recognising the drive correctly.
The soulotion to this problem (driver, disk manager - whatever you like
to call it) means you cannot use this drive with Linux.
If that is not the case then all you have to do is find a Linux
distribution that uses current kernels for the installation (RedHat is a
good choice - uses 1.2.13) and you're out of the woods.
For further details read the Large-IDE mini-Howto (http://www.linux.org.il
and serch for the howto's ;-)))
Good luck.
