I had an extreme degradation in performance when adding memory above 16Mb
on a machine here at work. (I added another 8mb ontop of 16 mb, and the system
would slow to a crawl at certain periods). The machine I had was 486-66Mhz,
with adaptec scsi disk (on AT bus) , s3 video card. Someone explained to
me that this was due to the AT bus only able to access 16Mb address range, thus
requiring various paging mechanism which swapping to the upper 8Mb.
Perhaps, if my disk was on local bus or pci it would be ok.
Anyway, bottom line is that I removed the extra memory.
