Seems like a hardware problem to me, my bet would be memory, or a
problem with the definition of the HD. Bad sectors usually don't
result in intermitent problems.
Boot to DOS (or any other non-memory intensive OS of your choice) and
run some memory diag software (checkit comes to mind).

If this is not the case then boot from a floopy with a stable kernel
and run fsck (and there should be a way to non-destructebly check for
bad sectors).

A problem with the bus speed could also be causing this type of
problems. Slow everything down: max number of wait states, disable
cache, etc. this should slow your system to a crawl. If everything
crawls alright, start changing parts until you find which part is not
up to spec (the IDE controller is the first choice). If all the cards
are OK check the cache (long shot) by disableing it and running at
full speed.

If all's well at least you'll know it's not the hardware, in which
case a fun weekend of reinstalling everything awaits you. Have fun!!!

BTW: there's one other thing that may be wrong with the hardware: the
disk controller (not the IDE controller the piece of electronics
which is stuck to the underside of your HD), but if you no longer
have guarantee you don't want to hear about it.
