SoundBlaster + CD ROM Question

I am tring to install Linux from CD ROM.
I have Sound Blaster 16 with an IDE output(sound port 0x220,interrupt 5)
and the CD Drive on port 0x170 interrupt 15. The CD is made slave by not
using jumpers .
(At the CDROM book it is said it conforms to the IDE/ATAPI configuration.)
This default configuration works fine for DOS and WINDOWS 3.11 but
for Linux it dosent work.
i use sbpcd kernel and even put the port addresses at the boot: prompt
but the kernel dosent find the drive.(I tried with atapi kernel too)
Checking the HowTOs etc didnt get the answer.
If anyone can help I will be very gratfull.
