Re: distribution question
Hi,
You are goin in the right direction, IMHO, but there are some
obstacles...
If I connect information right, that particular InfoMagic Debian
distribution simply won't work (do they call it Debian 1.0?). It
wasn't an official release by Debian but something InfoMagic took from
an unstable mirror (or something to that effect). That's why the
first official Debian release is called 1.1 - to avoid confusion with
these disks.
If you can access Debian through the net then you should download the
just-released (today) Debian 1.1. It should be possible to download 5
disks, boot them and then connect to the Internet and do the rest of
the installation through FTP (that is, you select what packages you
want and the tool (dselect) will check dependencies and download just
the packages you asked).
You are welcome to come over and copy the "essential" packages from my
machine if you wish. I'm in central Tel-Aviv.
As for upgrading from 0.93R6 - I've gone through widely available
instructions to upgrade 0.93R6 to 1.1 and things worked quite well.
Right now I'm running a fully ELF system upgraded from 0.93R6. So it
is possible, but you better just skip anything below 1.1 alltogether.
I suppose it will still help if someone who knows Linux will sit next
to this newbie when he tries this and give him a hand when he needs
it.
BTW, why do you describe this question as "off-topic"? Would anyone
care to define me the boundries?
Cheers,
