You're more than welcome; I am quite new to Linux and this is about
the only not-entirely-documented (actually it is, somewhere in the
CD-ROM HOWTO) feature I stumbled upon -- Beginner's Luck, I suppose.
(I probably also can't help but toot my own flute... :-o)

Try to find the logic behind the occurrences by rebooting several
times with:

     a) Empty CD-ROM drive
     b) Audio CD in drive
     c) ISO9660 CD (Regular CD-ROM) in drive

and note the boot messages. If some of the messages pass too quickly
on the screen, you may retrieve them by using the command "dmesg".

Post your findings.

This feature may be (just guessing) related to a hardware problem; try
cleaning the CD-ROM drive lens (I have seen this solve quite a few
bizarre problems on messy-but-cute-and-still-very-productive-DOS
systems, including my own).

I have tried in the years I have had CD-ROM drives several CD lens
cleaners and I strongly recommend a red CD lens cleaner with the words
CD LENS CLEANER written on the circumference (it has six small brushes
on the CD and works wonders). There in no manufacturer's name on the
item (except perhaps UNIVERSAL-CLEANING SYSTEM on the back (sorry
about the shouting :^)). I have seen it in computer (e.g. Kohl Zeev)
and music stores (e.g. Tower Records).

Sorry for the ramblings...

Good Luck,
