Run `man -w gcc' . It will show, which file man tries to load. You'll
see something like
$man -w gcc
/usr/man/cat1/gcc.1.gz (<-- /usr/man/man1/gcc.1.gz)
Now, check if that file (/usr/man/cat1/gcc.1.gz in this example) isn't
truncated to a zero length for some reason or just isn't readable by
you. If it's truncated, delete it and man will recreate it next time you
run it, provided that source (/usr/man/man1/gcc.1.gz) exists.
