Linux installation

Hi,

My friend and I are almost killed by the Linux installation on his computer.
We are tring to install the Slackware ELF BETA distribution.
We already installed the a series to the disk and now tried to install
the lilo, but it failed. Then we tried to make a boot diskete with:
cat vmlinuz > /dev/fd0. When we tried to boot with such diskete it said
kernel panic, can't mount the /dev/hda2 ext2 for the root fs.

The disk is 540MB IBM DALA. My friend has an old BIOS so there was
a disk manager, but when we partitioned the drive and formatted it afterwards
I think it disapeared. I don't think Linux needs the disk manager, so
I don't know what is the problem.

Any help is apprechiated as fast as possible, cause my friend is completely
disconnected from the world and actualy can't use the computer.
Thanks.

Regards,
Denis.
