eth0 problems...

I've installed ethercards (plain a-la chip combo NE2000 cards, nothing
well-known or fency for that matter) on 2 Linux machines. Compiled the
kernel for ne2000 support, the kernel recognizes the cards upon bootin
(correct addresses and IRQs). I config the eth0 iface on both machines
correctly, add the routes (and here comes the good part) and NOTHING
works, ping etc.
Any ideas??
Machine A:120Mhz Pentium, 24MB RAM, NE2000 ethercard (using 10BASE2 coax
cable). Kernel 1.3.20
Machine B:66Mhz 486DX2, 8MB RAM, NE2000 ethercard , Kernel 1.2.13.
