I'm sure no one meant to offend your intelligence, let me tell you a
story which may help to shade some light on this behaviour:

Once upon a few years ago in a land about 80Km from Tel Aviv as the
sparrow flies there was this guy (lets call him Eli) who installed Linux
for the first time using Slackware 2.something.
When installing X the installation took care of installing all the
essentials but asked him whether he wanted to install a package with
a cryptic name and a description of "Further X development
libraries".
"Development?" though Eli "I'm not going to develop anything in the
near future."
Needless to say Eli was quite disappointed (and a bit baffled) when
half the applications running under X ended with a libXsomething not
found.
Distributions today are much better and with nice features such as
dependencies, but you probably won't be able to make out what many of
the packages do or whether you need them from their descriptions so
it's nice to have a distribution which you can install in full and
then delete anything you don't need.

Let me give you an allegory:

Tomorrow I'll be seeing metal closets near Hutzot ha'Mipratz and I'll
probably eat at the subway.
Should I order a whole bun of one type, or two halves of different
types? Dark or light bread? Club, Roast beef or salammi? What's the
best option and why? How does it compare to other options?
