If you dont intend to connect to en externalnetwork, you can use any IP 
address(though this is NOT recommended). There is an rfc discussing 
this issue.

The PPPD documentation is in /usr/doc/pppd if Slackware installed it for 
you. You'll need to read 'em. 

Also take a look at the Serial-HOWTO for info on how to setup your 
machine to accept a terminal login(via the modem in your case).
