You didn't get the point: the _old_ binary won't work with a 1.3.* kernel; the new
one will do.

1.3.70 seems to be stable. I've been using it for 1.5 months (SCSI HDs, ATAPI CDROM,
ethernet, PPP) with no problem.

/usr/lib is NOT an appropriate place for libgcc.a. Where did you take the gcc
binaries from? The path /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i486-unknown-linux/* doesn't seem to be
standard nowdays. If you compile it yourself, read carefully instructions in the
INSTALL file.
Anyway, how could this interfere with absence of vga.h?!
