There's no business like show business...
I haven't been able to get any response from the people at the show,
even though I:
-tried to rwall them (they don't seem to have rwall running)
-emailed them (computax1.actcom.co.il is an unknown address)
-tried using talk (no response)
-Sent mail to fnevgeny@192.114.233.1 by telnetting to port 25 &
using smtp by hand! (fnevgeny *still* hasn't checked his mail on
machine 192.114.233.1)
-Popped up an X window with a button saying:
"Push this and email me at hjstein@math.huji.ac.il if you see this"
(Seems like someone's done an xhost + on 192.114.233.3 - SERIOUS
SECURITY HOLE!!!!!)
(Needless to say, I've worked hard trying to get their attention. :)
Anyway, since I can't get anyone's attention, I'm forced to mail to
the list...
So, here's what's going on & what I'd like to know:
1. How are people going to get into the show? I'd commit to a time
now, but I have to meet my in-laws at the airport in the
morning, and I don't know when it'll politically acceptable to
leave. I'd *LIKE* to send email tomorrow morning to the
people at the show to tell them when I'm getting in, but it
seems like people aren't reading their mail! Maybe those who
first get there can leave a list of names of fellow Linux booth
helpers at the front desk? So *tell* me what's going on. If I
don't hear anything, I'll just have to email to the list when I
leave, and worst comes to worst, I'll just have to try to
sweet-talk my way in... :)
2. What is needed at the show? I can bring my printer (a 4ppm hp
compatible laser) if someone can give me a lift. I can yank my
sound card and bring that too. What about signs, handouts, ...?
If necessary, I can blow up afew Linux logo to 3x3 sheets of paper
& tape them together to form afew posters. What about software?
I'm bringing Infomagic + afew prime time distributions, so we
should be able to get anything we need, but it'd be better if I
install things at home first.
3. actcom.co.il isn't properly broadcasting the addresses of the
machines at the show - although I can telnet, ftp, etc, to the
numerical addresses, I can't use the symbolic addresses
(computax1.actcomm.co.il, for example). It would be nice if
this worked.
4. It would be nice to have email addresses on the show machines
for people working at the show. It seems like machines 2 & 3
aren't even listening to the smtp port (port 25), whereas
machines 1 & 4 are.
5. You guys should really be running xauth down there...
6. I assume that someone who was at the show today will be at the
show tomorrow to brief us on what works/doesn't work/generated
lots of oohs & ahhs/etc. In particular, I hope someone will be
there with root privledges so that the new people can install
things, get accounts, etc...
That's all I can think of at the moment. I have to get off the net
now - I'll log in again later (if I can manage to get a
connection...), so I should be able to be reached by email.
Alternatively, you can call me until 12:00pm tonight, or after 8:00am
tomorrow (although I don't know when I'll be in in the morning) at
03-546-5222.
Thanks,
Harvey J. Stein
