the way I see it, the ATI are not fully supported in Xfree, and none of
their acceleration features are used there either. after doing some
asking, I ordered myself the Matrox milleneum, which is not supported by
Xfree, but IS supported by accelerated X (a commercial packedge)
it is MUCH better than the ATI ProTurbo, and a little cheaper (in Israel,
anyway). got more WinMarks, higher on PC-Bench, ZD labs and others, and
has features like onboard rescaling, Guerard (spl?) 3D rendering, Mpeg
decompression (In hardware!) and more, and also a wider range of scan
FREQs. also, it uses the new dual access WRAM technology... I think it
left ATI in the dust (at least the papers say), but I didn't do any tests
myself to compare yet(nor will be able to, anytime soon.)
