Well, I did it before with serial line and it work (until today)
just fine (and fast !).
For the 286 - run kermit under dos (u can take it from
ftp://noa.huji.ac.il not a big site - search it there
its the hebrew support version of kermit) connecting to
com1/2/3/4 speed 38400.
For the Linux machine - RTFM of /etc/inittab and put there
a line with agetty -L 38400 (not getty, also RTFM) connecting to
the port u want to. After that u most run init 5 or reboot.
Sorry for not being more specific about inittab and agetty -
I have no linux machine next to right now.
The cable - simple DTE to DTE.
