We're using WD8013 and SMC Ultra cards. I think the last should cost now about
$120. No problems except NFS with buffers > 1K, which is not stable, but
probably it is because of cable or some other soft/hard ware.

AFAIK, there is no restrictions on maximum segment length - only on summary
cable length which is 500m in the case of SMC ULtra. There IS restriction
on MINIMAL segment length - 1.5m for this card; for cheaper NE2000 this
parameter is 3m and total length limited by 300m.

Never heard about; if such do exist, it won't be CHEAP - sure.

Samba. It allows WFW to use disk space and printers attached to a linux box.
We are using it;it's free.
