It is not a good idea to ask for money to come to the IP because:
1. Accepting money is an implied contract for a service. If some "guru"
destroys a "newbie's" disk, then who gets sued, the (legally non-
existant) linux-il, or the "guru" (who didn't get money for providing
the service anyway because the money goes to linux-il)?
2. The level of "service" provided varies from one "guru" to the other.
I have installed on many machines, but it is clear that I am not as
much an adept as Shay or Ira. Should participants then pay somewhat
less for my help?
3. Having to pay money might discourage participation by just the kind
of people we want to attract - people who want to experiment with
something new and fun but do not necessarily want to get too committed
until they play with it for a while (I mean like the types who asked
what to do when they get a prompt that says "login:").
I propose another model for the IP: Make it like a crafts fair. Each
artisan, (guru), provides help as best (s)he can for free, but is also
free to sell or advertise products or services.
I would feel VERY unconfortable being a "guru" at an IP if participants
pay for my services. Remember, the "P" in "IP" is after all "party" i.e.
fun, not "payment". If the group needs money we should find another
way to raise it.
