Networking the offices of a nonprofit organization
I was asked by the management of a certain nonprofit organization for
advice about upgrading and networking the computers in their offices.
They have 286 and 386 level computers. They'll want to buy 4 modern PCs
(Pentium with all the goodies) and network them together. The
applications are those which are typical for nonprofits:
- Membership database (with room for about 10000 records, several fields
each record).
- Word processing, filing and archiving of correspondence. This is to be
done in both Hebrew and English.
- Keeping track of implementation of board decisions.
- Budgetary control (accounting is made on a separate computer with
HASHAVSHEVET).
Internet access is part of the story, of course (for keeping in contact
with people worldwide, and for information retrieval from the WWW).
Now, after this long introduction:
I am debating with myself whether to recommend Windows for Workgroups or
Linux. The question is whether there is sufficient software (free or
commercial) which runs under Linux to meet the typical needs of the
nonprofit organization - and in Hebrew+English.
Any suggestions?
