all modems are pretty standard, so specific brand name will work better
on linux.

anything under 28k8 modems, V.34 to be precise. I heard a lot of peoiple
complain about USR and BOCA V.34s, but I can't give you any more data
over what they already published in PCMAG.
personal recomendations: Supra, which I work with, have a great CPS, and
have flash ROMS. should be under $350 in Israel, $220 over the counter in
the states. BestData are also sold in quontities here in Israel, and
should be under the 700NIS, I have heard good things about them too.

yep. CPS upto 3200-3300 on compressed files.

32k thoretically, unless you buy a 128k ISDN :-)
