Weird X problem

Greetings!

I'm writting this message again since I've yet to receive an echo of
my posting yesterday, so I believe the e-mail may have been lost
(something which elbit's server is known to do now and again).
If you've already seen the first version of this message I apologize.

Anyway, I've recently installed X 3.2 using the binaries at
xfree86.org, and now every time I try switching resolutions via
alt-ctrl-(+)/(-) Linux gets stuck and requires a hard reset.
I was wondering whether anyone knows about any such problem or if
this is the result of me installing 3.2 on top of a previous
installtion?
I'm using the SVGA server with trident 8900D (very old) on a
486DX2/24M (Award BIOS with all shadows disabled).

thanks
