You can use your Type 1 fonts with X as-is, because the X server includes 
a Type 1 renderer donated to the X Consortium.
You can also install these fonts in Ghostscript for printing.

There is *no* free TrueType renderer yet (write one ? ;-) so you won't be 
able to use these fonts with plain Linux. If you have to, you can buy the 
Caldera Desktop, which includes a commercial TrueType renderer (or so 
have I read).

No holy wars please, but I still think TeX/LaTeX is the best.
