I'll bet 10:1 that a VMS system sent it :-)
yes, domain names are case insensitive, usernames usually ARE.
you can mail me at ira@SCSO.COM, or even ira@ScSo.CoM, but Ira@scso.com
may have troubles (get's in to ira's mailbox, it does not attempt to find
an Ira account), but the system described above had CAPed usernames, which
means if my user is Ira, and you send to Ira, sendmail will say that user
"ira" doesn't exist, and "Ira" will never get mail... like I said,
sendmail drops caps.
