Linux compatibility of Mitsumi CD-ROM drive model FX400?

I have recently installed Linux on a friend's PC. He has CD-ROM
drive model FX400 manufactured by Mitsumi. We didn't succeed in getting
Linux to communicate with his CD-ROM and eventually copied what we needed
from CD-ROM to a MS-DOS hard disk partition and completed the installation
from the hard disk partition. My friend however wants to access various
CD-ROMs from Linux.

This drive is interfaced via Sound Blaster 16 card.

According to the most recent version of CDROM-HOWTO which I have (v1.6
dated 18 Oct 1995), the supported models are FX001 and CRMC LU005S, both
using the mcd/mcdx drivers.

1. Does anyone know whether FX400 is supported by Linux, and if yes, what is
   the correct driver to use for it?
2. My friend uses 1.2.13 kernel. Should we look for a more recent 1.3.*
   kernel which may support my friend's CD-ROM?

                                                Thanks,
                                                     --- Omer
