Before burying yourself (which is something you'll have to do sooner
or later, of course), look at a few options.
First, run xf86config. Follow what it says CAREFULLY, especially in the
part about choosing your graphics card and the resolutions. xf86config
will generate a base /etc/XF86Config file. If, when trying to make
X go, it still does 640x480, first look at the output
(startx >& /tmp/error). If it killed the other modes, enter XF86Config
and modify the modes or the dot clocks.
