My own experience with PPP was very positive. It essentially worked out
of the box, once I compiled a kernel with SLIP/PPP support. My
installation is clean Slackware 3.0, with version 1.2.13 of the kernel.

First of all, check for messages also in the file /var/log/messages.

Secondly, check your modem's configuration and make sure that you have
correctly configured your modem in your PPP scripts.

Thirdly, there may be some stupid mistake in your PPP scripts (such as
not expecting the correct remote system responses).

You may want to post to Linux-IL the scripts which you use to connect to
PPP (after censoring any phone numbers and passwords, of course!) and let
the Linux-IL community mobilize its 100+ eye pairs to find if your
scripts have any problems.
