I'm intending to buy a new machine together with a new graphics subsystem
to run Linux (..and OS/2, DOS, even some Windows) on. I'm currently into
buying an ATI Mach64, and I noticed part(s) of the debate that was on
this list earlier, although I couldn't scroll back to find it.
Money is pretty tight here, so the way I see it is this: either I can swap
VRAMs for DRAMs or cut back in cards level (that is take a level back in
the Mach64 series).
I need some info about the Mach64 series; (ATI's giving me plain
brochures with no specs). The top graphics card is the Graphics Pro
Turbo, that comes with (upgradable) 2MBs of VRAM. I've been told that
only VRAMs can be used on that card. Can the WinTurbo use DRAMs as well
as VRAMs? Is it upgradable? to what amount? Although only its name
implies that it is optimized for use with Windows, does it make it bad
for non-GUI applications or other (and better) GUIs? Why does Marc think
that the Graphic Expression is worth it? - it is only DRAM and
non-upgradeable (2MB max.). Can someone post a RESOLUTION:SCAN-FREQ:
FLICKER-FREQ table comparing the three cards, together with their price?
Thanks ahead,
