Hebrew in VC

(I read Hebrew-HOWTO, )

Since moving from slackware 2.3 to slackware 3.0 (ELF),
I can't get the hebrew keyboard to work in virutal consoles.
It worked OK in slackware 2.3 (kernel 1.2.8), but after I installed
slackware 3.0 (kernel 1.2.13) I copied my old rc.local, and
reinstalled kbd-0.90.
My rc.local is an exact copy of the one from the HOWTO (except
for adding "; do" after the $INITTY in the for lines).
I know that setmetamode works, because when I enter setmetamode
the reply is meta sets high bit (sort of). setfont and mapscrn work
because I run a program that outputs all 256 chars, and the
hebrew chars are in the right place. loadkeys works, because
when I press right control, to change to hebrew mode, and after that I
press q it gives me a slash, w gives me an apostrophe, but key that
should give hebrew, beep or perform some action (g, or h deletes the
line). If after the control I press n or b, it puts : on the line, and
then any hebrew char gives its octal code, so when I press t I get
\340.
It might be a problem with bash, but I didn't find any solution
in the HOWTO or in the bash manual page. I don't have currently
.bashrc or .inputrc, but as far as I know, I didn't have them when
I had slackware 2.3 and it worked then.

Please Help...

(Sorry for the long post, but I wanted to convey the situation
as much as I understand it.)
