I use 14,400BPS internal Boca modem. It works under both DOS and Linux.
I believe that the general rule is that if the modem works under MS/DOS,
it'll work also under Linux. I recommend internal modem over external
one at high transfer rates because you'll want to have the modem
communicate with the computer at 57,600BPS or 115,200BPS (when data
compression by modem is active). RS232C cables may be problematic at
those transfer rates.

The performance should be double. Presently, the price is more than double.

I was successful in reliably establishing 14,400BPS connections. About
28,800 BPS I have no personal experience. But some Internet providers
provide 28,800BPS modem access. Bezeq lines may cause
the actual transfer rate to be slightly lower. If speed is your utmost
concern, you may want to look into ISDN (64KBPS).
