I had exactly the same experience on my Linux system, about half a year 
ago. Fixing the partition table with fdisk, as people here said, will do 
the trick. My disk, however, did loose about 10 megs of information. 
These were the first ten megs of the first partition. Luckily, the first 
partition was SWAP SPACE...nothing lost. Moral: Make swap space the first 
partition ;-)
