I have been using smail for three years on the etzion.org.il server.
Their load is close to 500 messages per day. They have about 50 active
student accounts, 15 active staff accounts and three mailing lists
that have many hundreds of addresses, the most well known of which is
the "virtual beit midrash" (vbm) list. They have both UUCP and TCP
routing. Smail works superbly under these conditions.
I have been using smail on my own mail gateway for the past year, and
I installed it at the ministry of education in October. It does
both TCP and UUCP mail routing.
It works perfectly and is relatvely easy to configure. It has good
debugging capablilities. On the down side, you have to know how it
was compiled because it tends to ignore the configuration files for
options that were compiled in. This takes some getting used to. Also
on the down side, I have yet to find a book on smail. The documentation
available, like Olaf Kirch, is Ok untill you want to do something like
route mail using UUCP between two hosts, one of which is an Intranet
gateway and the other is an Internet mail exchange host and they
communicate via a third, UUCP host that has no TCP connections. Then
you are on your own pretty much. I have found that the USENET
community is quite helpfull though.
