I think this is taking it too far and might scare people away.  It might
be approperiate for formal countries like in North America or Germany,
but it seems inapproperiate to take such measures in the informal context
of an I.P.

All you have to do, IMO, is just to make it clear that there is a
certain risk at configuring your monitor.  As long as you pay attention
to the specs (there is no point in configuring without the specs, right?),
and don't do anything you wouldn't do on your own private machine, you
should be safe.

As for payment - what about a "charity box" with a small note next to
it explaining how much it cost the group to lift an installation party
(mostly the CD's and computer-friendly snacks, no payment for the work
itself!).
