terminals and X

Greetings fellow beings!

Not too long ago I put together an old 386 with a mono screen and set

it as a terminal for linux.
I was hoping to use it as a second screen for running FTPs, telnets
and the
like (which are more readable on text mode) while using using my main

monitor (a 14" one) for web-surfing and related. Problem is as soon
as I load X the terminals freezes, even when X is idle the terminal
hardly gets any attention and you'd need to be a buddhist monk to be
able to
work with it.
Linux is running on a 486DX2 with 8Meg RAM, so is there anything I
can
do? Am I doing something wong?
