I'd definetly look at the O'Reilly set 

and there is one called "the X window system " by Douglas A. Young
thats not a bad starting out book

I'd take a look at wxWindows libraries (for info look at 

http://www.aiai.ed.ac.uk/~jacs/wxwin.html  )

its a GIU dev. library that has libs for both MSwindows and Xwindows
