more about my CD-ROM problem

Thanks for all the suggestions. I guess I wasn't clear enoough about defining the problem - sorry. Here's more info.

1 - no it's not a hardware problem. The drive works in DOS - WINDOWS. It also worked fine in the LINUX SETUP program.

2 - yes - I have a CD in the drive when I boot - the same installation disk I used to install LINUX.

3 - no - the drive is NOT ide - it's an old CREATIVE SB16 sound card where the card has a proprietary interface for the CD.

4 - I tried the MSEG command some of you suggested - there is no line that mentions the CD-ROM drive or anything similar before the
lines I quoted in my last message.

5 - I can see the CD when I boot from the "boot and root" pair of diskettes I made for the installation - I can't see the drive when
I boot from LILO directly from my LINUX partition on /dev/hda1.

6 - when I tried to mount manually with "mount -t iso9660 /dev/sbpcd /cdrom" I got an error saying that /dev/sbpcd is not a block
device.

I hope this additional info will give someone an idea that can help me.

TIA
