I think it's a *great* idea. We could demo:
-The development environment
-Do a make inside of emacs, show how emacs can step through the
error messages, run gdb inside of emacs, show how you can set
breakpoints from source code windows, how emacs brings up the
source at the correct line when stepping through the code, etc.
-For fancier debugging, demo UPS & that tcl gdb front end thing.
-Demo some of the other languages:
-TK/Tcl - write afew simple scripts to show how easy it is
to script GUIs.
-Rotate surfaces & do some statistics using xlispstat.
-Scilab and xplot also come to mind.
-Multitasking
-Play a game while the above compilation is running.
-Run afew dosemu boxes.
-If you can get a 2nd pc, connect it to a serial port & use it
to log in!
-Net surfing (if we can get a phone line and can use someone's
account).
-Run netscape, telnet, ftp & do an irc chat while the above is
going on...
-Text formatting.
-Do some simple TeXing & previewing using xdvi.
-Fun
-Run doom &/or other games in windows while doing the above.
Maybe let the public play gnu chess.
-Run the sim city demo.
-Interoperability
-Have the linux box serve some files to PCs.
-Have the linux box act as print server for the PCs.
Another thing that could be done would be to sell and/or give away
linux distributions. We could maybe use that mini linux distribution
that installs on top of an msdos partition using the umsdos file
system. I think it's maybe 5-10 disks. We could buy disks & sell the
distributions, or we could copy them onto diskettes that people bring
(while they wait).
How does one go about getting a table? How much does it cost? Does
anyone have a machine they can bring over?
