Thanks Gadi,
The line "hdd=cdrom", helped and I did not have to open the machine
and mess with jumpers.

The strange thing is that while it was wrongly set to hda=cdrom, 
I suspected it may be another ide drive and ran the "install" program
that comes from Slackware.  When setting up your CD-ROM, it gives
you an option to scan all IDE drives and I tried that but it didn't help.
