minicom locks the port. You can exit minicom without hanging up the modem,
using the following sequence: ctrl+a and then q, it will ask you leave
minicom, chose yes. Then run pppd /dev/cua1 [speed] [options]
of course , [speed] and [options] stand for whatever speed and options you
might use.

Try man minicom for christs sake.

No, there is no need, and winsock sucks. By the way, if you're looking for
a nice automated procedure for ppp connection, try using dip (man dip).
