Based on my very bitter experience in installing Solaris x86, I think this is true...
Solaris has a somewhat convoluted way of partitioning the disk (using 7 partitions) and must have control of all of them, including the first partition which is used for /. I think I saw somewhere a paper about how to configure Solaris and DOS to work
One last word: unless you have a real good reason (which I assume Eli Marmor has), stay away from Solaris x86. It was a real shock to me, after paying 1035$, to get a product which is inferior to linux in every respect, but especially the ease of insta
