Upgrade from 1.2.13 to latest

Hi,
I have a complete slackware 3.0 system (kernel 1.2.13) installed, and would
like to try one of the latest kernels. What upgrades do I have to make before
trying to compile the new kernel (gcc, libc etc.)? Please specify recommended
versions to update to.
By the way, I've heard about the great improvements in TCP times in the recent
kernels. Is this significant for a standalone PC connected by dialup?

Thanks,
Tuvik
