I use SAMBA At my office, and it works well. It does all the neat stuff
of long filenames and such. Installations is pretty simple, and takes
minutes - All you have to do is make install...

As for your question, it is allways better (in terms of performance) to
run the smbd/nmbd as a daemon. It will result much quick response, and it
does not consumes much memory. Don't bother yourself with trying to run it
as inetd. (BTW: You can also try to run httpd at inetd ;-) ).

I had only one problem with smbd - once every few weeks the smbd commits
sucide, and I have to smbd -D again (no need to reboot).

I really like SAMBA, and it works pretty cool, and pretty fast (well, I've
got P120/32 and a 3com/pci card).
