Thursday's meeting with Sela
Hi.
This is a general summary of the Thursday meeting. Please place this
on plasma-gate, Evgeny.
-----
Shay Rojansky, 18/5/96.
The meeting took place on Thursday 21:00 in Tel-Aviv. The people present
from Linux-il were Harvey Stein (abel@netvision.co.il), Amoss Shapira
(amoss@cs.huji.ac.il) and Shay Rojansky (roji@cs.huji.ac.il). The
Sela Representative was Ariel Cohen (aco@sela.co.il).
The primary purpose of the meeting was to discuss possible cooperation
between Sela and Linux-il. It started with the three Linux-il members
explaining the list, its activities, and other relevant things. The
following needs were outlines:
* Financial problems.
This mainly had to do with sponsoring at shows. We explained that
the previous shows were funded partially, if not fully, by the
list's members' donations. It is clear this situation should be
changed with the help of a sponsoring company.
* FTP site
There does not exist a sunsite && tsx-11 mirror in Israel. Even
Slackware mirrors are somewhat shaky, with Machba-imposed
connectivity limitations. The need for a site, or rather, a
large-volume disk/s that would enable stable mirroring of important
Linux archives from abroad.
* Official status
The lack of official status is problematic. For example, no
agreement was reached with any bookstore regarding selling
Linux books at the show because of this. Also, a company front,
and especially a Unix-related one like Sela, would help with
larger CD variety, Linux accessories and books in the next shows.
At this point Ariel Cohen was asked to explain what his company, Sela,
does. Ariel explained that Sela actually consists of several companies.
Each company deals with different aspects of the high-tech world:
* Education - courses for learning everything from AIX to Visual C++
programming. An authorized SunSoft education center.
* Development - developing tools, mainly in networking and Unix.
* System/Network administration - Administration and counselling for
various companies and educational facilities.
Next, Ariel explained how he sees our group and what he expects to gain.
The main message Ariel passed was that he is interested in people. His
point was that people in Linux-il are gurus, administrators and could
be very helpful in his line of business. Some ideas he had were to
hire people for part/full time jobs, to obtain technical help from the
list, to get ideas and development-related help from the list, and
to generally draw on the list's people and knowledge.
The meeting was concluded at this point.
