For mail: You should set up a POP (Post-Office Protocol) server on your
provider's account. This lets you receive mail in your provider's account
even when you'r not connected to the net now.
You can then retrieve your mail on connection by using a POP client
such a Pine.

For Usenet News: You can use a little prog called 'suck' (sorry:-) which
collects the newsgroups you want and then downloads them to your PC.
You can then read news offline with tin et al.

Just recompile your kernel with PPP enabled or load the ppp.o module.
Then, get the pppd package from sunsite (ftp.technion).
You *need* this. A HOWTO is included with this package.
This dials the modem for you and everything else.
