We've had at least two flame wars of this kind in the list, all sympthoms the
same - with some members leaving, some suggesting splitting of the list etc.
There is even a sociological study :) - see
http://plasma-gate.weizmann.ac.il/Linux/maillists/96/05/msg00158.html
(BTW, should it be included in the FAQ?) The bottom line, however, is that list
remains unsplitted and some (probably, majority) of unsubscribed members
subscribed again after a while.

There are lists and lists.
I'm subscribed to a few linux mailing lists, too. Those lists have very high
signal/noise ratio; otherwise, experienced and busy members would unsubscribe -
and what is good in a list having only newbies on it?
An excellent example that comes to my mind: a few months ago, some member of
Linux-il sent a primitive question to the LINUX-SERVER list. Hmmm... not every
list has a person 100% equivalent to Marc... :)) but someone immediately replied
to the list with "Please don't flame him & send replies to the list! I'm helping
him now". The softness of the reaction could be explained only by the rarity of
such posts there.

Well, Ariel's already answered this precisely.

Agree. But is sending a pile of ignorant mails a sign of modesty?
