Well, a number of notes about your controller. The AHA1542CF (as well as 
many of other Adaptec controllers) are extremely sensitive to TWO bits on 
the bus - the cable and the termminator.

The cable MUST be (a) high quality and (b) SHORTER THAN 1.2m TOTAL.

The terminator must be active.

Since you make no mention of other device on the chain, I will assume 
that the disk is the only one.

What is the disk's model, by the way?

In any case, "disconnection" means that a device, once given work to do, 
releases the bus for other devices to handle.

And, as for Adaptecs documents, I wholeheartedly agree. I am switching to 
Buslogic BT958 for my next controller.
