Computax
Hi, everyone.
Do I understand correctly, that we have a secure booth in Computax? That's
the drift I got... ;-)
> Did anybody try to run Win 3.1 in Dosemu, by the way?
Don't even think about it. The development team itself says that it
can't load anything, much less something impressive.
> This trick along with Borland 3.1 in Dosemu can be very impressive.
Here I agree. I have Turbo C++ 3.0 and it runs perfectly. I think Dosemu
should be a strong thing to push for Computax - it'll show people they
can emulate a lot of their applications (simpler ones, at least).
I recommend having games (Doom, etc.), a few compilers (BC, TC, Turbo Pascal,
etc...), and a few other serious DOS applications. I recommend that anyone
who has a nice DOS (!windows) application at home should bring it to the
meeting and we'll test them.
If anyone has any questions regarding DOSEMU, refer them to me since I
hammered at this cute thing a lot.
BTW: Dosemu can access Novell server. Another point in our benefit. Any
ideas...?

Agreed.
> Who takes the responsibility for Dosemu handling Windows 3.1 and Borland 3.1 ?
Win 3.1 - no. Turbo C++ 3, yes. BC - don't have it. If someone can bring it
to the meeting I'll set it up.

> Maple?

Bring anything you think might be impressive. We'll always be able to choose
in the end.
Besides creating listings for the programs, we should compile a list of
everyone who's bringing in a computer. Anyone who's bringing one, please
send mail to me (roji@cs.huji.ac.il) with:
1. What days (Computax is 3 days long)
2. Hardware specifications (as detailed as possible)
3. Software installed on it already.
This is important so we can plan what goes where and when.
> For booth itself :
> There should be a program like that ( cyclic - every hour )
I was thinking more of an "on demand" demo, but if we get popular enough
for cyclic ones... ;-) Let's have one computer demonstrating emulations,
one development...
> xx.00 : System capabilities demo ( VC, X, ps, rtop, perfmeters ,
> multiple X servers etc. )
> xx.15 : User Applications demo
> Standard: emacs, ghostview, xdvi ( not getting into details),
> clocks, diaries and reminders, painting programs,
> Games: X games, SVGA games
Agreed - nice little things always seem to impress people. Games too.

> xx.30 : Compatibility demo:
> Dosemu with Norton ( does anybody have a legal copy? ), Win 3.1, BC 3.1,
> some tested games.
> Wine (limited, but whatever is available).
> WordPerfect, Maple etc.
Not Wine. The thing can hardly run Minesweeper (some suspect it's hard
coded into Wine... ;-))
Dosemu is good.

> ( did anybody try OOD, by the way?),
> vxp (Motif Builder);
> xwpe ( quasi-Borland IDE);
> ddd ( new very impressive gdb-based debugger), xxgdb ( still ... ), tgdb
>
> Scientific tools ( all *lab Programs, MuPad, Maxima by the way,
> don't know whether PovRay fits in here etc. )
OK... There's some more work needed here. We need some people who know
their way with this (and can be at the show).
Any more volunteers? We don't have that much right now... I'll be posting
a listing soon, so let's start volunteering...
The meeting will be at 9:30 at the specified location. People who need
to install stuff - be there at least 15 minutes earlier. All people
bringing a computer to the meeting (regardless of Computax) mail me
with the details (roji@cs.huji.ac.il).
