HELP... installing and configuring XFree86
Hello everybody,
I have problems installing my Linux properly and seek help:
I have a pentium-100MHz computer PCI motherboard and Graphic Card.
I have an unknown brand monitor (supposed to be phillips) with the
following specifications:
Vertical Refresh: 50Hz to 90Hz
Horizontal Sync : 30KHz to 38KHz and 48KHz
Video Bandwidth: 50MHz, at -3dB
(taken from the monitor documentation).
My video card is:
TsengLabs ET4000/W32P Graphic Accelerator with 1MB RAM.
I bought the Slackware 2.3 with the book and the cd.
My first problem is that i haven;t manage to install from the cd. The
setup program identified my cd (IDE cd from reveal 4X) but said that the
source directory (the one with A1, A2...) is not found which i checked
and the setup program looks for \slakware which is the right directory.
So i installed from HD - no problems there.
Now i'm facing the problem of configuring my X.
I use xf86config with no problem. My path is O.K and so are the paths in
the file XF86Config.
My monitor like i said is "unknown" so i just press "Enter" in that section.
My Graphic card is number 43 in the cards database and i choose XF86_W32
which is the correct server.
xf86config creates a XF86Config which has lines of MODES in it which i
don't know where it came from.
now when i run X -probeonly my screen goes blank and the system loses the
monitor. When i redirect the command to a file, after i use
alt.+ctrl.+del to restart my system i see the clocks lines (2 lines) and
other messages that inform me that some modes are using the wrong dot
clock and that they were deleted (which is not true).
I myself deleted all the modelines exept the one's that were O.K
Still when i run X -probeonly the screen goes blanc.
now i get inside the file the message: "can't read colormap from VGA"
I think i'm going to lose my mind.
can anyone help me, send me a configured file or something or just
explain to me what the ... should i do???
Thanks
