Just to set things right - TeX was designed as a _technical_ formatting
system, mainly for scientific usage. As such, it is probably still the
best tool around - certainly much superior to Word. It may not be
suitable for your needs, though, which is a different story altogether.

That's really a minor problem. The output of TeX is *.dvi, which is
easily converted to *.ps by dvips. If your printer does not speak
postscript (most laser printers do) you can always filter the .ps file
through ghostscript.
Sorry for the off-topicness of my remarks, but I felt obliged to stand
up and defend TeX ;-)
