IPX winsocks?!?!

only partially related to Linux...

did anyone visit Caldera's site lately? they have some mighty interesting
partnerships going on! Here's an example:

JSB TO PORT 32 BIT IP/IPX GATEWAY TO CALDERA'S LINUX PLATFORM

The combination of Caldera and JSB products creates a cost-effective,
secure Intranet solution for NetWare LANs

INTERNET WORLD, SAN JOSE, Calif.-April 30, 1996- JSB today announced that
its IP/IPX gateway, INTRAnet Jazz Open
Gateway, is currently being ported to Caldera's Linux platform, providing
NetWare users with a complete Internet/Intranet access
solution at substantially lower cost than alternative solutions. The
combination of the Caldera Network Desktop and JSB's IP/IPX
gateway will also decrease management costs for NetWare-based Intranets
by providing the ability for 16 and 32 bit WinSock
applications to access Internet/Intranet environments via IPX and Caldera
servers, eliminating TCP/IP management. The absence of
TCP/IP at the client greatly reduces security concerns for
Internet/Intranet access.

"NetWare users can now crate a low-cost, secure Intranet environment by
adding the Caldera Network Desktop's strengths as a private
information server and JSB's complete, integrated Intranet client and
gateway solution," said Rob Barrow, CEO of JSB.

Bryan Sparks, President of Caldera, Inc. added, "The combination of
Caldera and JSB products in a NetWare environment eliminates the
frustration and concern felt by network administrators looking for the
lowest-cost secure Internet/Intranet environment. JSB products
not only eliminate the majority of security concerns, they ease
administration costs and allow control of employees' Internet access."

Caldera will be shipping JSB's INTRAnet Jazz Open Gateway for the Caldera
platform and also two of JSB's Windows client software
solutions: INTRAnet Jazz Kiosk and INTRAnet Jazz Client Suite. All three
products will ship on the Caldera Solutions CD, scheduled for
release in June (1996). From the Caldera Solutions CD, customers can
install 30-day complimentary usage versions of the software or
purchase and unlock full versions directly from the CD-ROM.

INTRAnet Open Gateway Windows client ($50/client with concurrent
use) enables users to run TCP/IP applications across IPX
using WinSock to the IP/IPX gateway on the Caldera Network Desktop
($99/CPU). The combination also allows users to run the
latest TCP/IP applications, including 32 bit browsers, in a
NetWare environment.
INTRAnet Jazz Kiosk ($20/client in 10 packs) is a robust Intranet
browser that allows IS managers to control costly, unapproved
       employee Web surfing.
The INTRAnet Jazz Client Suite ($295/client) is an integrated
series of 32 bit OLE-and Web-enabled client components for the
Web, email, telnet, ftp, Kiosk, MultiPing, Rules Agent, Intranet
Sentry, Web Briefcase and Organizer. Intranet Jazz Client Suite
is available for Microsoft Windows 95 and Windows NTV4 platforms.

other partnetships there tell about the release of sun's WABI for Linux
(there goes WINE...), the Caldera Office Suite includes Metrolink Motiff,
Wordperfect and Z-mail (we knew that was coming) for $330 (ouch...)

my dilemma is this... on the one hand it makes me happy linux-based
products are getting popular and professional enough to be sold for such
prices, on the other hands it means most of the good stuff will not be
Freeware...
