Guru network out of control...

This has really gotten way out of control. First everyone whines
about newbie messages, then people start setting up mailbots to
mailbomb list members? Every single one of the "gurus" on this list
have, in the past, mailed stupid, thoughtless messages to this list.
Some have even mailed stupid, thoughtless answers. And if you don't
believe me, go read the mailing list archives.

So, how about just dropping it already? It's one thing to
occasionally have Marc flame someone who fires off a dozen random
questions. It's quite another to have a group of people jump on each
and every newbie posting for each and every picky reason, including
creative spelling.

If the goal is to reduce the mailing list noise, then YOU'RE FAILING!
Lately I've seen more flames than flame producers, and that's not
counting the ensuing debate on the merits of flame.

We haven't had excessive mail on this list for a long time. The only
reason we have excessive mail now IS BECAUSE OF ALL THE DAMN
FLAMING!!!

My god! Practically *every* message on this list is already answered
in some documentation or other. Maybe next time someone has trouble
telnetting into a linux box from a dos box, I should flame them for
not reading /usr/src/linux/Documentation/networking/ncsa-telnet, or
maybe next time someone asks about smp I should flame them for not
having first connected to some obscure web site. Maybe I should flame
every Hebrew under Linux questioner for not having read the Hebrew
Howto, tried every single thing listed, read all secondary documents,
and tried all possible variations before wasting *my* time!

So how about just dousing the fire, skipping the flames, starting from
scratch again, and reserving the gasoline+matches for the *serious*
offenders who produce volumes of email, and refuse to follow the
guidelines of the list, even after *polite* messages and even after
being ignored?

If you don't like someone's posts, how about just configuring proc
mail to filter them instead of configuring it to mailbomb them?

P.S. - If anyone tells me they were mailbombed for mailing to this
list, I'll personally telnet into port 25 to hand deliver /dev/hda |
uuencode into the mailbombers mailbox, even if I have to stay dialed
up for 302,000 hours to do it!
