There was no chance...

1. No CD-ROM, and no SCSI (and don't forget, PCMCIA-SCSI is
problematic...). Installation could not be done through
networking, since he does not have Ethernet (I recommended
   3Com EtherLink 3C589, a PCMCIA 10baseT card). Yes, there
was a floppy drive, but there were not so many diskettes
   in the party...

2. No resources. It is not only disk/mem, but also the age of
this notebook. 3 years old notebooks had so many problems
(which you never faced on normal desktops).

3. No knowledge. For example: I wanted to give him the URL of
"The Linux Laptop Home Page" (which is:
   http://www.cs.utexas.edu/users/kharker/linux-laptop/ )
and he asked me "what is URL". I answered "the address of
the page that you see under Netscape", and he asked me:
"what is Netscape"... Sometimes, for some people, it is
better to use Win Those 95 :-)

In order to be successful, even when dealing with notebooks,
I suggest to go my way:

1. Buy the most expen$ive notebook in the market (I bought
Toshiba Tecra 720CDT, with Pentium and internal 1024x768,
   32MB, etc.).

2. If you are planning to use a device, HAVE IT BUILT-IN!
(not PCMCIA!): you must have a built-in floppy and CD-ROM.
Prefer a notebook with built-in modem (I have). Don't try
to find a built-in SCSI. You won't find (except for Tadpole,
which is > 10K$, and unsupported in Israel).

3. Buy 3Com EtherLink 3C589, and put it in slot 0 (the lower). I
   don't know the reason...

4. Have a desktop. It will allow you to backup your files (through
networking), unless you want to use dozens (or 100s) of floppies...

5. Be a UNIX expert...
