kerneld and pppd

I have recently upgraded my system to kernel version 2, from a very cranky
Cheapbytes CD-ROM (Did anyone get one that works, BTW?)

I have since upgraded the kernel to version 2.0.12.

I am experimenting with the use of the kernel modules, and especially the
use of kerneld in conjunction with pppd to create a dial-on-demand system.

The problem I am experiencing is as follows:

When I try to connect, the /sbin/route-request script is invoked, dials my
Internet provider (Demon) and successfully creates a PPP connection.
However, the command that invoked kerneld (say, for instance ping
demon.net) is not able to use the newly-created PPP link and times out.
Other subsequently run programs can use it.

The pppd man page has all kinds of parameters which can be used in various
time-out situations; I have tried a few but nothing I have tried up to now
seems to help. Does anybody have any experience of this?

DB.

P.S. Is it worth upgrading to a newer version of the kernel, and if so,
which one?
