This depends largely on your version of kernel. I use 1.3.48, which is
very recent. I installed it for Adapted-2940 support, and didn't know
I would need ATAPI support, but I had it compiled in. When I changed my
cdrom drive - it worked immediately. All I had to do is ask the kernel
to look harder when searching for ATAPI cdrom drives. I first booted
adding to the lilo commandline:
LILO: linux hd=cdrom
This made the kernel recognize the cdrom.
I think the new ATAPI driver is available with kernel 1.2.13 as well.
