In fact I have started with a clean _slackware_ distribution (3.00).
Because of the aforementioned compilation problem I decided to upgrade several
of the libraries, and did it by using rpm, and a picaso (aka RedHat 3.0.3)
distribution. The versions are as listed in my original letter.

gcc 2.7.2-2
ld.so 1.7.14-2
make 3.74-5
libc 5.2.18-1

I didn't yet update SysVinit (will do...) but got the latest ppp package (not
that it matters - it seems to be included in the latest kernels anyway).
Thank you and all the others for the kind replys.
