how about indexing the mailing list archive ?

You could use one of the wais descendents or.. my personal favourite is
a cool package called glimpse which comes from the same guys who 
wrote agrep (grep with approximate matching capabilities) it indexes 
files which may be compressed and has a nice cgi interface for searching 
the database create by glimpseindex.
