So far I'm checking KBackup 1.2.7 and taper 6.X.X, both are free.
taper seems more robust (written in C), but it creates it's own format (which
scares me), and not very fast. I was disappointed when it measured a backup
speed of 12-13MB/min, when I get 30MB/min under NT with NT Backup ("Backup
Exec Lite...").

KBackup is essentially written as a shell script (which also scares me), but
it uses a curses front end like taper, so it's easy to operate. It also uses
tar or afio for the backup process, so you can open the archives directly if
you need to. The only problem so far was that the AFIO copy included in 1.2.7
was corrupted and it core dumps. I need to get a new copy of AFIO.

There is another commercial program called BRU, written by Fred Fish (try
www.estinc.com). If you ever used an Amiga, you know who Fred Fish is.
