I've done it, I do it, and I have a linux compiled copy at the office.
However, I don't recommend using it! This is because:

   1. Netscape can do its own caching, so we don't really need it for
speed. The only advantage of httpd caching is that it could
keep 1 cache for the entire network (if all machines use the
machine with the modem as a proxy), whereas netscape keeps one
cache per user per machine. However, netscape's caching has
several advantages over cern httpd caching. Firstly, it can
cache html pages (cern can't because cern worries about whether
the html page is the result of a search (for example). Netscape
can get away with this because of it's second advantage, namely
that it checks with the remote host to see if the cached file is
      up to date.

   2. Since we're getting a class C network, we don't need to set up
one machine as a proxy server. This is the only reason I use
cern httpd at the office - we just have a single-user account,
so httpd runs on the machine with the modem & services all the
      other machines.
