What you say may be true, but internal cheap modems (Boca and other 
Rockwell-based modems) tend to hang from time to time. If you're using 
Linux and leave you computer on all the time, this may force you to cold 
reboot from time to time to reset the modem. This happens to me from time 
to time, and may be a good reason to use an external modem. I have had no 
problems at all with hi-speed serial cables.
