What the backspace key does depends also on the application in question,
but do a 'man xmodmap', to learn about changing the mapping between physical
keys (keycode) to a logical key (keysym). Most well behaved X applications
relate only to logical keys, so with xmodmap you should be able to map
your physical backspace key to the logical key whose function you want
invoked.
BTW, the fact that the backspace does a delete is very usual and it is strange
that you want to change it.
