Following on from a discussion on the server-linux list about the need for
an easy-to-configure Linux system, I have christened a project 'Linnet'
(assuming nobody else is using that name!) and put some thoughts up at:

    http://pobox.com/~linnet/

If you have any problems with that URL, try this longer one:

    http://ds.dial.pipex.com/town/plaza/aan01/linnet/

The idea is to create a server Linux distribution which has a single,
consistent, self-documenting configuration system for all services, and
doesn't require any Unix expertise to set up. Its primary applications would
be routers, firewalls, terminal servers, and Internet servers (mail, web
etc). It's _not_ intended for workstation users - not yet, anyway.

Although my own particular interest is in schools and developing countries
(where I am currently doing rather a lot of Linux support via E-mail!), I
see no reason why it should not find applications in commercial environments
too - especially if it integrates all those useful things which are not well
supported by normal distributions (e.g. radius authentication, mailing list
servers, fax servers, IPX and Appletalk over PPP, and so on). One of the
primary goals is for the core configuration database to be dynamically
extendable, so that extra services can be bolted in but they would be
configured in the same way as all the others.

I would be very interested to hear if:
  - anyone thinks this is worthwhile or not worthwhile
  - this overlaps with any other work-in-progress
  - anyone has ideas on how best to implement the configuration core
  - if there is sufficient interest, if anyone would like to offer to
host a mailing list, and ultimately an ftp site

After checking out the web page please reply by private mail to
linnet@pobox.com, and I will report back here in a week or two if there is
general interest.

Regards,

Brian Candler.
