Long filenames are available when you tar your original files and copy
the tar file into the DOS-formatted floppy. When you want to read a file
from the tar file, just pipe the output of tar xvf into your program.
Not a big deal. And speed is not the issue here because speed addicts
would anyway copy their files from the floppy to the hard disk (or even
to RAM disk) before work starts.
Since you mentioned other reasons, I am curious to know what they could
be.
