New libc & Cyrix
I have subscribed to Linux-il few weeks ago, I enjoy reading your list,
and I thought that you might enlighten me with the following problem.
I have installed the new RedHat-5.0 on my Cyrix 120 machine.
Everything worked just fine, till I tried to compile a new Kernel
(2.0.32).
The compilation aborted, and I got a signal 11 message.
A possible reason could have been a defected memory (although I had
compiled other 2.0.x Kernels on this machine before, with a
RedHat-4.2).
I tried to compile the same Kernel configuration on another computer,
with my SIMMs, and it compiled properly (RedHat-5.0 too, and Intel
Pentium).
I even changed my SIMMs with newer, and got the same message.
I have changed the CPU to a genuine Intel (Pentium 90Mhz) and it worked.
IMHO, it's the new libc (and specifically the new gcc) which comes with
RedHat-5.0 distribution that does not compatible to pseudo-Intel CPUs ,
the one to be blamed.
Do you know about former C libs with similar problems ? Other known
compatibility problems with Cyrix?
Is there any good solutions for the above problem?
