NC + Linux + Java + RH Contrib = Success

Hello,

I have here 1) my success story with NC + JAVA
and 2)a question regarding NC/Java/Sound

Some time ago I have asked whether I can run Netscape Communicator
with Linux in peace. The answer was no!

Yesterday I have installed the NC402b7 NC301 versions and
linux wrapper script (+ libs included) downloaded from RH Contrib

Now, I can run NC3.01 with Java and NC 402b7 with Java and it's 90% stable
(3.01 runs Java smoothly and 402b7 sometimes gets crashed but it's pretty
stable) (I'm running RH4.2 with kernel 2.30)

So if you are one like me, who didn't know how to solve that problem
till today get:

ftp://ftp.netscape.com/pub/communicator/4.02/4.02b7/english/unix
/linux20/professional_edition/communicator-v402b7-export.x86-unknown-linux2.0.tar.gz

ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/contrib/i386/netscape-wrapper-bnl-4.02b7-0.i386.rpm
(Use alien to convert rpm to slack or debian if you use these or search
the net to get the original package)

(I guess you have the NC3 already)

Install both Netscape Versions underthe same $dir (check the wrapper, I
think $dir=/usr/local/netscape)
$dir/3.01/
$dir/4.02b7/

And then you can run any of the versions
by
% run-netscape -v 3.01
or
% run-netscape -v 4.02b7

The wrapper includes the needed libraries so you don't have to worry
about that issue

BTW, it supports the other versions of NC4 as well
---------------------

And the question:

The only thing I didn't succeed to make working is a sound in Java
I have sound compiled in the kernel and I it plays "cat sound.au
>/dev/audio" But it seems that I miss something since I don't hear
Netscape plays Java applet envokes au files? I have set helper
Applications in Setup to basic/audio au cat %s >/dev/audio
and it plays them if I call the au link directly but no with Java
I have looked at both Sound-HOWTOs but they don't have no references
to the browser/java cases
Do you know what I miss? I guess I need some plug in or else?

Thanks !!!
