"kernel_version needed" and Building a Kernel

Hi!

I'm trying to insert module "tpqic02.o" into the kernel (2.0.27
included in RH 4.1), unsuccessfully. I have to use a new version of
this module (2.1.40) since the olders are not loadable. Unfortunately,
I get an error message (for the command: insmod tpqic02.o):

kernel_version needed, but can't be found

I upgraded the kernel to 2.0.30, but I still get the same error.

What can be done? I know that rebuilding the kernel with "tpqic02.o"
included, will solve the problem, but I tried to compile the kernel in
almost any variation, no success: I tried both "zdisk" and "bzdisk",
of both versions 2.0.27 and 2.1.40 (yes! the newest!), and in various
(different) configurations, but the kernel failed (after the message:
"Loading Linux" and all the dots displayed on the screen, my computer
reboots...).

My configuration:
================
Pentium S-133, installed in Soyo motherboard, no SCSI, no sound, no
CDROM. Standard IDE disk. QIC-02. PCI-based Ethernet card (DEC 21041).
16MB. All the standard interfaces (COM1, COM2+Logitech, PS/2 port,
parallel, etc.). System: RH 4.1, 2.0.27 (now 2.0.30). Everything is
running perfectly (even Windoze 95 :-) , except for my-own-compiled
kernels. Contrary to my rich experience in building UNIX kernels
(I used to fix the kernel of PDP-11 when I was a child :-) , I don't
have any experience in Linux kernels (maybe the problem?)

Thanks in advance,
