the main problem you will find with linux is that software updates MUCH
faster than printed words. you know that word 6 books that hit the
bookstores 3 monthes before word 7 was out? it's worse here... in fact I
find that buying books about linux is more often a waste of money even for
newbies. so here are the steps of getting yourself aquainted with Linux
the way I see it:
* start reading the unix general guide on
http://www.linux.org.il/UnixHelp/ to get a general idea of what unix
is.
* then move on to pick a distribution. my personal (arguable) preferance
is RedHat, it's both highly professional and organized, and easy to
install without a lot of prior knowledge. Others may prefer Debian or
Slackware. RedHat has also a good online manual for the installation:
http://www.linux.org.il/RHL-4.2-Users-Guide-HTML/manual/index.html
* after installation is complete, you can dual-boot your machine into
win/dos or linux, feel free to reboot to linux and start implementing
things from the UnixHelp. linux is a bit different from other unices,
we'd like to believe more organized and simple to get along with, since
it's a young OS that tries to solve the problems of the old monsterous
commercial Unix distributions.
