The Internet does not have borders; For example, if you posted
anything to any newsgroup, the chances are 60%-70% that your address
is already included in most of the spam databases, no matter if you
are Israeli or American or Iraqi (BTW: what was the joke about the
guy that wrote "Baghdad, Iraq" as his address?).
There is a list of (currently) 37 million addresses (!) that is sold
through the net, and the list doubles itself per year (my address is
already included there :-( poor me!). The price offer is sent
through the Internet to... (surprise!) ...37 million netizens! Now,
imagine that only one of 1000 will buy the list, and will use it
only once a month. It ends by 400,000 messages per year sent to
anyone listed in these lists! Just imagine that you get more than a
thousand messages per day! Even without a real "From:" field, just
a snail mail address (maybe the solution is to send a bomb to this
address :-).
Currently, I get only a dozen of spams per a day, but no doubt the
number will reach what I mentioned above, very soon. In a year or
two.
IMHO, this is the most dangerous threat on the future of the
Internet. In fact, it is not only my opinion, but many others too,
including the "prophet" who was the main developer of the (original)
Internet, I don't remember his name. He claims that after the
pamming will almost kill the Internet, the providers will be forced
to change the billing method, which may solve (partially) the
problem.
What can we do? In addition to restrict our list, we can do another
thing to take "*@*.il" out of this crazy thing. But I don't think
this is the right forum to discuss this idea. Maybe in the
installation party?
BTW: mentioning the installation party, *please* set it to a date
after we will have RH-5.0 here in Israel. It is not a clever idea to
use an obsolete version.
Sorry for spamming you by sending this message,
