It defines a character map. If you read the PPP howto, you'll see that
setting an MTU of 1500 is unwise, to say the least. There is no MTU of
your ISP, the MTU fits to the lowest setting. Set it to 1024, and the
asyncmap to 0, and at least try it. If you ask for help, and help is
offered to you, you can at least try it out before ruling it out.
