Why don't you check some benchmark pages for any CPU you might consider to
buy?

Let the numbers do the judgement :-)
IMHO, If linux can work on 386 , it will work good enough on any processor
you can afford, if you use your linux box for the general and not heavy
applications.
Once you think you need some very good performance then you should try to
make your system better. Otherwise don't waste your time and money, it
doesn't worth it! (Remember that if you trying to keep on the 'highway'
you will spend a lot of money for being able to keep with concurent
hardware)
