In addition to the
   1. book

there are more 4 reasons to have (or not) the official one:
   2. a commercial X server From Metro
   3. a commercial backup utility
   4. the audio server of Real-Audio/Video
   5. a package

and two reason not to have it:
   1. It costs $50 (you can find in $33 too)
   2. a package

Or instead of duplicating RH and saving only $50, why not duplicating
Photoshop and saving $700, or Oracle/Autocad/etc. and saving thousands
of dollars? :-)

Anyway, you can still copy it without the commercial stuff, but then
there is no difference between it and the cheap one.
