Zombie processes

Hi.

I'm running my system for just four days non-stop, and I already have two
zombie processes, both of them are modprobe. Here's one of them:
20887 ? Z 0:00 (modprobe <zombie>)
Why do they appear? How can I kill them? kill and kill -9 don't seem to
help.

And another question - from time to time gpm starts acting weird. For
example, it stops recognizing the right button as the "paste" button, it
just acts as if I cliked the left one. I then need to restart gpm. What's
happening?

FWIW, I have a RedHat 4.1 system running on a P133, 32mb.

Thanks in advance.
