ftpd misbehaves

Hi,
I'm trying to set up an ftp server on a linux machine. The server has a moderate
load - about 70-90 simultaneous connections over a T1 line.
When the number of users get high enough, above 50 I think, and after the system
runs for several hours, I start to observe strange behavior, which ususally
involves programs either dumping core or giving a message such as "/bin/sh:
fork: Try again" or "no more file table entries".
I get the same result on 2 different machines, one running RH4 and one running
slackware 3.1. I updatied the RH ftpd, ran several kernel versions (2.0.18,
2.0.27, 2.0.25) as well as a kernel which was patched to allow an infinite
number of fd's per process, and got the same result in all cases.
I'm now trying to switch to using ncftpd, and so far it seems to be stable, so I
suspect that the problem is related to wuftpd. However, since this is a
commercial server, I'll have to pay for ncftpd and since I intend to run several
such machines, I'd rather stick to wuftpd if I can get it to work properly.
Any ideas/comments/suggestions would be appreciated.
Sincerely,
Gilad Gam
