Re: Linux copyrighted by someone ?!
I had the chance to ask Jon "Maddog" Hall (the primary advocate for Linux
in Digital, and a rather high ranking manager there) the same question at
Usenix in January. His reply was that indeed Digital tries to promote as
many operating systems to run on the alpha platform. He said that since
licensing Digital Unix is rather expensive, they promote Linux as an
alternative for people who want the power of the alpha platform, but can't
afford an extra 2-3K$ for the OS. As a result, Digital is indeed involved
with the linux effort, especially when it comes to funding and contributing
equipment. They had quite a few representatives in the last Usenix/Uselinux
conference.

Now, is it my imagination or Digital seem to actually support the Linux
project? I remember they also contributed workstations for our booth at a
computer show. DEC maintains Digital UNIX, so logic dictates they should
disaprove of a free replacement to it. Or do they want that as many OSes as
possible would be able to run on their machines, and are glad that a
flavour with source compatibility to x86s is developed without any expense
on their part?
