actually I haven't followed for more than a month while I was abroad.
Qmail has been VERY stable for the last few versions, the last security
hole squashed way back 8 months or more ago. Version 1.0 has been out for
quite a while, under a GNU-like license.
since it uses the maildirs instead of mbox as default, it has it's own
qmail-pop and qmail-imap for now. very few people on the list complained
about the popd being slow or stucky, and those were ISPs with tens of
thousands of messages a day or more, btw, WAY after the standard GNU pop3d
gives way. for such large volumes maildirs are also wasty, so usually
those people switch to qmail delivering to mbox and Qualcomm's Qpopper
server. I have no idea how well the qmail-imap functions, but it's based
on wu's daemon, i.e. same as pine's (not too good in my book).
the first rules Cheswick and Belovin teach you in their Firewall book is
keep as few programs running, and those you must keep: make sure they are
small and safe. Qmail does just that. the component that runs as root is
tiny and is mainly there to spawn other child unpriviliged processes of
the actual tools. it's extremely fast and efficient, MUCH faster than
sendmail, that's for sure, and MUCH more inteligent as a delivery agent.
However for UUCP and other weird archaic links, many prefer to sometimes
default back to more documented MTAs like sendmail. basically, AFAIK,
there shouldn't be any problems...
as for mailing lists: there is a tiny patch to make majordomo 1.94
compatable with Qmail, and there is also ezmlm (easy mail-list manager?)
from Dan Bernstein (who wrote Qmail), and works also very tightly with
Qmail, but is not as versatile as majordomo when it comes to limiting
posts etc.
