hot-swappable SCSI

I need to install a new webserver for a client, the option of having a
portable external SCSI DAT drive between the linux and an existing Digital
Unix box (I suppose an Alpha, standard Centronics or mini-SCSI
connections).
I don't worry about compatability with both OSs/machines (or should I?)
but I am concerned about how I can attach/detach it freely. I know it is
possible to detach the tape from the DigiUnix and reattach it while the
machine is up, but what about a PC platform? most hardware is only
recognized at boot time, and rebooting the server before backups is out of
the question. is there any way a Linux can reread the SCSI bus without
having to umount all the disks etc.?

thanks, Ira.
