Me too.

Among PD tools, I've tried taper and tob. Taper has nice interface & rich
featers, but (from my experience) is unreliable. It choked at least twice during
restore (important files, as luck would have) so I gave up. Tob is a simple but
nice script, which you can easily extend. It also allows you to choose kind of
underlying archiving mechanism (tar, afio, cpio etc), it can be used for
archiving on remote tapes.
For the last year, I use BRU. It's very reliable & powerfull tool. You pay for
it some $$, but if your work is important for you, you get much more. It saved
me few times after disk crashes or accidental deletes. BTW, you can use BRU with
tob, but if you want to utilize all nice features of BRU, you'll have to write
your own script (I'm talking about unattended backups)

I use only this. (GNU) tar would be as good and probably faster if you have a
lot of small files, but `cp -a' is simplier and time is usually an unimportant
factor.
