Re: blank console
Sorry, APM only blanks the console if the APM extensions are enabled. They
are not, by default, because this causes enormous problems for whom hasn't
got a smart monitor (can even burn out an old monitor).
The console just goes blank by default, and not OFF. Under Linux the APM
settings mean nothing, as far as the console is concerned. This is because
the screen APM is implemented in the BIOS, and the BIOS is not used unless
APM is on. This is different than HDD timeout, which works if set from the
BIOS defaults, because the HDD timeout is an ATAPI feature and is set
before booting Linux by the BIOS. In Linux, the blanking is set at login
in /etc/profile or from the system boot scripts where a line containing
'stty...' is found (in /etc/rc.d/?).
For the HDD timeout, rtfm hdparm...
