Also: lilo does not like partitions that contain the 1024 boundary. You
must partition the disk such that cyl 1024 is a partition boundary if you
want them to be seen by lilo as bootable, ever. 

Maybe it is not clear from my previous posting: The thing that decides the
number of cylinders a controller translates to is the highest sector and
head count encountered in the partition that will be booted from (i.e.
first accessed). If you do not boot from the drive then its controller
will switch modes when the internal drive boundaries are crossed (ex. from
head 4 to 5). It stays in the highest mode it reaches until reset by a
drive reset IDE command.
