Well, the Linux Documentation Project has some good books about Linux, but
some of them are not too updated. Its URL is:
http://www.ssc.com/linux/resources/ldp.html
If you are also new to UNIX, you should start by reading the "Linux
Installation and Getting Started" by Matt Welsh there. However, I think the
book is rather old so it does not deal with PCI. Moreover, you should not
install Linux according to the instructions in it, because there were a few
developements in that area.
Understand this: there is nothing particularily special you need to do in
order for Linux to run under P133. To put it straight, if you want better
performance you should compile the Linux kernel as Pentium code. As long as
no Assembly programming is involved (and even then it mostly does not
matter), there is not much difference in using Linux under a Pentium than
using it under a 486 or a 386. At least not for the end-user.
As for ATAPI CD-ROM drives, again, compile the kernel with support for
them, and then do a
mount -t iso9660 /dev/hdd /mnt/cdrom
to see the contents of a CD which is inserted there. (the IDE device of the
CD-ROM drive may not be /dev/hdd but /dev/hdc or /dev/hdb; the second param
specifies where you want it to be mounted on your filesystem)
As for PCI: what types and what models of PCI boards are you refering to?
Hope it helps.
