Regarding the Nintendo 64 port of Linux...
Hey, do you remember the article Ira mentioned about the group that created
a port of Linux for the NES 64-bit? Well, it mentioned that they had
problems running X there because Nintendo 64 only has 4 MB of RAM, and a
limited capacity of disk space. However, the primary objective of the
project was to enable Netscape Navigator to run on a NES64.
So I have this idea: if we only want to run Netscape Navigator, and it only
uses the Motif API for presenting its GUI, then maybe one can rewrite Motif
to do the job. The special Motif DLL will do all the writing to the screen
on its own (w.o using X-win) and may probably support only one application.
We should also use a version of Netscape that is dynamically-linked with
Motif, of course. If Navigator still relies on X, for presenting graphics
for example, than we can prepare a specail version of Xlib, but that would
be messier still.
As for other application - the multitasking can only be done using virtual
consoles, but it might be possible to run several Motif/X apps each on its
own console.
What do you think?
