I don't know exactly what you mean by a 'boot console', since I've never
used freebsd. One thing though - if a machine is truely stuck, you can't
reboot it from the console. Not even on any of the BIG machines (Suns,
DECs, SGIs, you name it. DEC and SGI even have reset buttons
sometimes...)
Anyway, I assume you mean a consone that's connected by a serial port
rather than the machine's own monitor/keyboard. That way you can connect a
modem to them and logon when the network isn't working. You can do that
with Linux, I have it on a few machines at work. There's a Serial Console
patch for 2.0.*, and the Serial Console option is available in the 2.1.*
kernels.
