ipv4 is just a new nickname for the good-n'-ol' IP protocol. I suppose
it is important for you if you want TCP/IP. Alternatively, there is
ipv6, which is an extension of IP for the future. It is not supported
anywhere (AFAIK).

If you don't have PCI, just recompile the kernel w/out PCI support.

You have to upgrade your init package. You must consult the file
Documentation/Changes for the list of software to upgrade.

If you just do 'echo' in the script, it goes directly to the console
(if not redirected). You cannot record them this way. The other thing
is that every decent daemon syslog()'s all messages, so you'll be able
to see them in the log files.

This is screwd up. I strongly recommend you to upgrade your system
completely to RH 4.1. No hassles, everything works (more or less). And
don't forget about security holes ;-)
