we're using amd in a similar environment (except there's no SGI). what i
could sayis that formerly, linux's amd didn't support NIS, but now it does
(at least the one i got together with Redhat 4.0). 

what was done before, as some workaround, is to use ypcat to copy the NIS
maps from the server to local files, and then supply those files to amd.
but in any case, if you managed to get NIS working on your linux, amd
would work - maybe you have an old amd? or a NIS problem, and NOT an amd
problem?
