never heard of solaris supporting IP masquerading. it's a low-level kernel
stuff, i'd assume (it CAN be partially faked using a user-level process
for the INCOMING packets, but i don't see how this can be done for the
OUTGOING packets, UNLESS you use a very strange configuration with a
virtual interface on the solaris machine, and a "smart" process. and
probably even then i'm not sure its possible).

again, not known to me that this is at all possible with solaris. *maybe*
if there's some free firewall that can do the translation, but even then,
since your provider only supplies you with a SINGLE IP, translation won't
help, only masquerading or a similar technique.

i'd much doubt if applets use the proxy server. someone will have to
experiment and see (if you'll point me to an *exact* URL with an applet
that downloads data after being started, i could try to check this out.

in any case, the proxy will at least let you view most normal contents.
yet certainly things like readlaudio and realvideo won't work (neither
with nor without masquerading).

manually, if win95 has anything to say (i.e. ONLY if it was a direct
connection from the 95 machine to the rest of the world, would it be
possible to do it semi-automatically with win95). however, you may tell it
to prompt you whethe to dial out or not, and then if you choose not
to,it'll use the network card. if you do -it'll dial and use the modem.

another way might be to write a script that pings your ISP and if this
failes, modifies the default to use dialing. however, how to make this
modification is slightly harder (find the proper registry property to
change, and youcan use regedit with a .reg file to do that, and then, how
to invoke the dialer is also a mistery tome).

guy

p.s. in case someone read till down here, i'm taking a place at the
dinner (i do _hope_ they have spagetti there..)
