i'd say: first try very hard, reall hard and extremely hard, in solving
the two problems (hint: search on www.dejanews.com for others experiences,
and apply them to your case). then, once done, upgrade to RH4.1 (simply
since RH4.0 has too many bugs to mention, some you witnessed, and some -
not yet). 

the reason is simple:  you do - you learn. and the more you'll
learn about RH's startup files, the easier it'll be for you to deal with
other machine s(e.g. solaris uses a similar startup file structure. maybe
others can tell us about other OSes?).
