You can buy one of those UPS's with rs232 connector, and use the standard
UPS support in your inittab, but I chose not to do so, since I have too
many devices on my serial and parallel ports already.

I bought a UPS with no monitoring cable (much cheaper) and built a very
simple device connected to my GAME PORT which is unused.

I wrote a simple upsd program to sample this device and shutdown after a
while.  (ofcourse I added some other fancy controls :)

The device is just a 220V relay, "pressing" the "joystick button #1" upon
power failure and depressing upon power back.

I can send you the upsd and driver if you plan to connect such device.

If you choose to buy an rs232 ready UPS, just read the UPS howto.
