It's not so simple - alot of Linux fs problems can make a disk look
broken. Reformat and try on another machine or another OS. If it really
is broken it will be broken for all OS's. IDE just isn't all that complex.
You might want to try a low-level format, but my guess is that you've
stepped on a kernel problem or have an underlying fs corruption that is
trashing the kernel somehow. Search Alta Vista and you will see alot 
of these.
