kill failure

Hi

I've experienced today some strange thing. I was running octave-2.0.9
and gave it very large matrices ( but RAM that I have should be enough
).
Suddenly it started to fill the swap quickly. I decided to kill octave
but didn't succeed even with 'kill -KILL' ! Then I logged in as root and
run halt. But octave wasn't killed , I've seen a lot of 'octave out of
memory'
messages and finally root filesystem was not able to be unmounted
because it
was busy, and was some message about not being able to find free page.
System
became halted and I should do hard reboot. After rebooting fsck was not
able
automatically repair filesystem and I should do it manually from rescue
disk.

The question is how is it possible that neither 'kill -KILL' not init
and
not killall5 that is run by one of the shutdown scripts were not able to
kill
some process ?!! It looks as some serious bug. Any suggestions?

The system is Linux-2.0.30 P100 48M RAM 32M swap.

Thank you.
Boris
