the only reason for scandisk to invade a Linux partition or even the
partition table itself (this sounds more like NDD) will be
incompatabilities between DOS and Linux' translation methods... if DOS and
the BIOS decide on LBM, don't force it into CHS or large or whatever the
BIOS offers. safest thing to do with a disk you want both DOS and Linux to
live happily on together, is let DOS' fdisk create a partition for Linux,
then change it's type during Linux' installation. that would work for
sure.

to solve your current problem: like Arik says, the chances aren't good...
try e2ed if you know what you're doing and you have to save really
important stuff. otherwise just install RedHat 4.1 and hope for a better
tommorow :)
