junk in the mail

I have been getting the same shit you have been getting. I did nothing. I
am ABSOLUTELY sure that I sent the original message ONCE. I know this
because I used telnet to port 25 of actcom.co.il to do that while I was
checking some assumptions about SMTP. I had no mailing software and no
servers running on the 386DX machine I was connected with, and it was not
networked. I use a bare box for this kind of thing precisely to avoid
accidents.

I sent the message exactly once, using direct telnet contact with a PPP
connection supplied by Bezeq 135 dialup (selected provider #10 if I'm not
wrong), to actcom.co.il (who is my provider more or less).

The message was about as follows:

220 hello
HELO actcom.co.il
250 OK
MAIL FROM:<plp@actcom.co.il>
250 OK
RCPT TO:<linux-il@linux.org.il>
250 OK
DATA
354 Send DATA etc...
<Message here>
.
250 OK
QUIT
221 byebye or whatever
<click>

The message had no subject, no cc, no nothing. Also no return-to or such.

I have been getting a lot of copies of this apparently. There is also a
mysterious 'inverse' mail from one shporer@usa.net, an oleg@netvision and
a lot of huji bounces.

My hunch is that majordomo tried to rewrite a header somewhere and managed
to build a loop. If I can be of any assistance about this please say so. I
suppose that someone must break the loop by closing the queue for a few
hours and then purge it.

Anyway thanks for the many answers. I AM writing a new one, ultra simple.
Do not expect the world. (Ah, and did I mention that I will try it
*offline* for some time ?)

regards,
