cool. why didn't I think of that before?

was bored for a few seconds, decided it was time to study PAM once and for
all and install shaddow passwords...

read all about PAM, it's as amazing as it sounds, look at this:
http://www.linux.org.il/RHL-4.1-Users-Guide-HTML/manual/doc071.html

10.4.5 Shadow Passwords

The default pam_unix_*.so modules can support shadow passwords. In order
to convert your system to shadow passwords, use these commands:

cd /etc
pwconv5
chmod 600 passwd- shadow-

The pam_unix_*.so modules will automatically detect that you are using
shadow passwords and make all necessary adjustments.

and THAT'S IT, my system is now fully on shadow passwords, only needed to
reinstall RedHat's IMAP RPM (mine was imapd as compiled from the Pine
package) and now I'm off to recompile ssh.
