do NOT cc: this message on!
Amos, it's an old one, you should have known it by now. Here's the quote
from Usenet:
"One for the history books: rec.music.white-power attracts largest
numbers of voters yet!
You've probably heard about it: several months ago, a Milton Kleim, Jr.,
known racist and frequenter of USENET white-supremacist groups, proposed
a forum for discussion of music which focuses on "white power" themes.
When the newsgroups was proposed, it was roundly criticized as yet
another "cyber"-forum designed to spread the language of racial hate to
the growing masses of the online world; it was expected that the group
would attract a large number of "NO" votes to prevent
rec.music.white-power from becoming one of the 15,000+ groups that
comprise the whole of USENET. The expectations were correct; however, the
sheer MAGNITUDE of people voting against the group was totally
unexpected.
People from all over the computing world voted against the proposed
newsgroup, including those who have never heard of USENET. The wall of
"NO" votes, caused by unrelated parties who used mailers, programs, and
word-of-mouth, managed to severely incapacitate the machine where the
designated volunteer vote-taker for the proposed group worked from.
The vote ended on March 18, 1996; the posting of the results occurred
about two months later."
