Many thanks to ELi for providing this informative post. Those who 
responded previously should take note!
BTW, Qualcomm's qpopper handles APOP protocol which provides password 
security. I have been using the qualcomm qpopper for several years at 
a dozen or so customer sites. It works very well. It uses a user-owned
file in /var/spool/mail for temporary disk storage instead of /tmp for 
privacy.
