Linux (all of them) allways take all available memory (like most OSes)
Memory is not reason that your X not run. It is usually bad XF86Config
that not suitable for your hardware.
PS. I remember old good days memory was expensive I've run X on 4M (!)
with enought swap. It was SSLLOOOWW but works.
