Ultra-DMA drives are fully usable under Linux if and only if the chipset
of the mainboard where they are used is supported by Linux (fully
supported, not just 'generic' support). When used with a
not-fully-supported chipset they default to lower speeds. 3-4 MB/sec from
an EIDE Ultra-DMA drive with an internal (on-board) driver is about
normal these days. Some boards give more.
