1. loadlin is used exclusively from DOS. Was that what you were doing ? 
If yes then you do not need a boot disk. Place the CD in the cdrom and 
give the location of the kernel to the loadlin program (read loadlin.doc).
Also be sure to give it the root as /dev/fd0 and ramdisk as parameters.

You will probably need the eide kernel. The second one works 
(one of them). For root disk use rescue. 

When you wrote the image of rescue, did you do it as required (rawrite ?).

2. Leave the hardware alone. It makes no sense to remove good things 
(except SCSI controllers and network cards which may conflict during 
installation), especially if the work.

3. The CD is certainly not damaged. CDs have error correction. At most 
you can get a file read error.
