That's what I suspected.  Go for ANSI, K&R is really obsolate today.

Buy the K&R book and read it carefully.  Copy all the examples to your
Linux machine and compile them (maybe even if you can find them on the
net, typing it in is part of the excercise), do all the extercises.  I
learned C in less than two weeks from the first edition by doing just
that.
