ADLIB and YM3812 are options on sound cards but do not define any
particular sound.
There is more information to be found hidden in the manual of your
motherboard, the web site of the manufacturer or even in the CMOS setup
screens [no sound options there?]

This is consistent with the incomplete definition above. Here is an
example of a complete definition
CONFIG_SOUND=m
CONFIG_ADLIB=y
CONFIG_MAD16=y
CONFIG_YM3812=y
MAD16_BASE=530
MAD16_IRQ=11
MAD16_DMA=3
MAD16_DMA2=0
MAD16_MPU_BASE=330
MAD16_MPU_IRQ=9
Note the line "CONFIG_MAD16=y" which defines a particular type of card.
If you are lucky, looking at the motherboard or at the diagram of the
motherboard in the manual, you might be able to determine which is the
main chip that your sound circuit uses, then make a good guess by going
through /usr/src/linux/drivers/sound/Readme.cards
That was the good news.
Here are some bad news from the same drivers/sound/Readme.cards
----------------------------------------------------------------
NOTE! OPL3-SA is different chip than the ordinary OPL3. In addition
to the FM synth this chip has also digital audio (WSS) and
MIDI (MPU401) capabilities. OPL3-SA is not supported by OSS/Free.
Support for it is included in OSS/Linux v3.8 and later.
----------------------------------------------------------------
So, part of your sound circuit (the FM synthesizer, MPU401 and Windows
Sound System compatibility mode) cannot be used by the freebee OSS
Finally and long as you are already living your life dangerously with
2.1.7, why don't you get 2.1.29?
This is especially justified as you have a recent sound hardware and
Free OSS is changing rather quickly
