RE: new debian packages

Very impressive, but this leads me (as a newbie) to ask what might be
a silly question, so my apologies in advance. I don't want to get
into the usual **which is better** controversy, but my question is:
Once you decide which to install (Debian, Red Hat, Slackware), are
you limited to only using packages written for the distribution
you've installed ?? Can't you recompile packages for one distribution
and use them on another ??

Oh dear!
If only I had a penny for each time someone posted something that was roughly like that.
AFAIK, you can install Slackware & Debian packages on redhat using a program called "alien", which is available as source, binary, or RedHat package (rpm). I have no idea whether one can install packages from different distributions on the other two. Slackware packages are basically Gzipped compressed tar files, so they maybe install, although probably not too smoothly, on Debian. Let's just say that I wouldn't try to install the newest version of GCC that way.
The rpm run-time/developement library will probably run on the other two dists and it may be possible to install RedHat packages that way. Nevertheless, I wouldn't try it if I were you, unless you are willing to make a serious research.
TSU, if you have RedHat, there shouldn't be any problems in installing Debian and Slack packages. If you don't, may the force be with you.
