Idea for a new Linux-related site
Hi, I have an idea about a Linux-related site that I'd like to share with
you. Let me know what you think about it.
The page will be called "The Linux Kernel Experiments Page". It will
feature several small or medium-sized patches of the Linux kernel with
detailed explanations about how they were programmed and integrated into
the existing kernel code.
The purpose of the site is to help would-be kernel hackers and other
people who are interested in knowing more about the kernel organization.
Some preliminary ideas for patches:
* Implement the Win95'-like '...' '....' etc. directory directives. In
95's DOS windows 'cd ...' is equivalent to 'cd ../..'; 'cd ....' can
replace 'cd ../../..' and so forth. The patch will make the open, cwd and
other file-system related system calls accept those aliases.
* Support for NetBIOS' named-pipes and mailslots I/O by using ANSI
file-handles and functions (read(), write() ).
* Anonymous mailslots: a special type of anonymous pipes that also keeps
track of the size of the packets that were written to it. One can query
the number of buffers, the size in bytes of the next buffer and other
information by calling ioctl().
* Various permission games: allowing a certain user to have root
capabilities regarding file I/O, while remaining fully restricted when it
comes to module-loading, process-killing and so forth. Allowing a group of
users to mount filesystems within their home directories.
So what do you people think about it?
