It's is not true. when you send mail to yourself pine or whatever invokes
sendmail with puts message in your mail folder in spool directory.
To read it you just also need pine or whatever to check you incoming mail
folder in spool directory. When you read mail sendmail is not invoked at
all.

There update which fixes slow sendmail start - check out updates/errarta
for Redhat 4.0 on ftp site close to your hoem :{)
Second remark is that if you connected to the net with dial up with no
static IP you do not need sendmail running as deamon at all. It is just
unwise to run it in this case. It is just security risk and unnesesary
load to your system.
To disable starting sendmail at startup you just need to use Runlevel
Editor form control panel and remove sendmail from 3d level or just
removing sendmail symlink form /etc/rc.d/rc3.d or just move it to
something that does not start with S or K.
Hope it helps
