Have you investigated the High-Availability HOWTO:
http://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/ALPHA/linux-ha/High-Availability-HOWTO.html
It includes making sure machines stay up or reboot appropriately, etc.
There were also a few articles in the Linux Journal about linux
solutions where PCs needed to be more robust than usual. One, I
believe, was a geophysics or weather data sampling system where the
linux PCs were in remote places (such as antartica), and they
described the techniques they used to keep machines from hanging.
Other articles had linux PCs on submarines and on shipping vessels,
and they had similar problems to attack.
If I were you I'd read the above HOWTO and articles, and if necessary,
contact the authors with precise questions.
