1) A note about hardware 2) Linux, system administartion and documentation.
Couple of days ago I had a chance to look at the 2nd edition of "Running Linux".
I think that this can interest some of you.
1) A note about hardware.
=========================
there is a 3 pages appendix about 64-bit AXP Linux.
A few sentences copied from there are:
"One port of Linux to a non-intel platfom deserves special notice . . .
More Choice, More Power
At the time of this writing, Linux is available on 64-bit Alpha AXP RISC
platforms
. . . at prices comparable to current 32-bit Intel platforms. . . .
Getting Information on AXP Linux
The primary resource . . .
http://www.azstarnet.com/~axplinux
. . . retrieve a FAQ file by FTP from ftp.azstarnet.com in the
/pub/linux/axp/docs
. . . The FAQ also lists approved DEC vendors . . . any DEC vendor
that won't
sell you a single motherboard for upgrading your PC did not make that list.
. . . Linux information of use to AXP Linux users is available at:
http://www.linux.ncm.com
. . .
Considering the Alpha Option
This section describes the upgrade path of replacing your Intel motherboard on a
PC with a DEC Alpha motherboard . . . The Noname motherboard is documented
in /pub/linux/axp/docs/axppci on the azstarnet site.
. . . Currently, the GNU ld has not been ported . . ."
2) Linux, system administartion and documentation
=================================================
The following is from the bibiliography list on page 597:
"Linux Documentation Project Manuals
. . .
[3] Wirzenius, Lars. The Linux System Administrator's Guide. 1995.
This is a guide to running and configuring a Linux system. There are many issues
relating to system administartion that are specific to Linux, such as needs for
supporting a user community, filesystem maintenance, backups, and more. This
guide covers many of them.
. . ."
A few weeks ago I posted this group a question about such documentation. I
thank all of you who answered me.
