DON'T KILL THEM!
update is used by the kernel to flush temporary buffers into the
disk. And killing the mounter of the CDROM will not help you, too.

I have update and mount, and still:

[root@ip9 /]# uptime
 10:05am  up 46 days, 23:06,  2 users,  load average: 0.36, 0.09, 0.03

Check if you had (in the best case) an electricity stop (I don't
know the exact English word), or a hacker's attack (in the worst
case). Use "vi /var/log/messages" and look for the last restart (by
"?restart"). If /var/log/messages" is too new, try
"/var/log/messages.1". You may find that your computer actually had
a reboot 3 days ago.
