Recent version of the aic7xxx driver work just fine with adaptec new
Ultra2-Wide adapters. I use it on several systems with Seagate Ultra2
Cheetah drives, and performance is very good, though I haven't bothered to
actually benchmark it.
On the other hand, there currently are *very* fast UDMA disks. In
particular the newest series by Maxtor won several benchmark contests.
Check out the various hardware pages on the web (disclaimer: I have no
information regarding to the MTBF of these drives).
If you are in real need of high speed disk I/O the best (meaning most
cost-effective) thing you can do is surely to build a small UDMA RAID
array, with software RAID at the kernel level. This can give you
performace better than any single disk.
