Comdex & RedHat CDs

Hi.

Computax was nice. I learned a lot of new things - for example that you
_can_ connect two token ring cards together not through a hub. I need to
find the crossed cable for token ring now (or create one myself). The
Linux-IL booth was full all the time.

I talked with a representative of a company that presses real CDs (I mean,
they produce the normal kind of CDs, not with CD-writers). They can take
pretty small orders (starting from 300). Now, looking at the prices he
gave me, it may have been worth it to order our RedHat CDs from them and
not write them ourselves. The "stamper" you first have to create costs
1800 NIS. Then each CD costs 2.75 NIS, and that includes printing on it in
two colors. If you want jewel cases it will cost you additional 0.40 NIS /
CD, and if you want to wrap them in plastic it costs additional 0.10 NIS.
The prices do not include MAAM.

Quick math shows that if we ordered 300 CDs it would cost us 10.8 NIS a
CD, including MAAM. That's just a bit more expensive than writing them
ourselves, and much cheaper if you count in the time and effort it takes
(though I guess you shouldn't count that because people do it
voluntarily). The CDs, though, would have a much more professional look.
If 30 (hand-written and thus unprofessionally looking) CDs were sold in
the first half of the first day I guess that we could easily sell 200 CDs
during all Computax. The remaining CDs would run out fast during the time
after. (They could have been spread between people in different cities. I
know I would have taken a dozen or so myself, I guess that the organizers
of the InstallFest in the Technion would also like some, and so on.)

Just the 200 CDs we could sell during the exhibition at the price we
offered could have covered the cost of the booth and then some. (If we
sell each for $19 which is 68-70 NIS, take the cost of the CD out and
multiply the remaining 55 NIS by 200, and you get 11,000.) That's already
valuable enough.

Obviously this is not relevant for this time anymore, but I think we might
want to keep it in mind for the next time.

What do you think?

I'm including that company's contact info in case anyone is interested.
They are called "CD Line" and are located in Holon, st. HaMerkava 19.
Mikud 58851. Their phone is 03-5596964 and the fax is 03-5596934.
