Well, basically if both schemes are supported by PAM (most schemes I know
and don't know about are), see

and the authenticating program is PAMified, you may just write in
/etc/pam.d/authprogram something like:

auth	sufficient 	/lib/security/pam_method_old.so options 
auth	required	/lib/security/pam_method_new.so options

and maybe some more. Then any of the authentication methods may be used,
and you may phase out old method just by commenting out first line.

I'm not much of a PAM guru myself, so you better to read /usr/doc/pam-X.XX/txts/pam.txt (on RH) or analogous doc on other PAM
pack.
