slackware is not a friendly softwere, can't say that any distro is
friendly but yes, slackware is not very costumized when it comes to
system settings, however when it comes to security metters, slackware is
very good.

i whouldn't recommend slackware to starters, i whould recommend it to
people who like to struglle systems until the sweet solution.

slackware suites my needs and i am very used to it so i could not use
anything else, but if i had to recommend on an all-inside distro (full
of crap and some nice stuff) i'd recommend on Suse(excellent system,
good security costumization and very nice interfaces) and RedHat.
