Subject: [svlug] Linux's gender...

OK, this is by far the most interesting discussion we're ever going to have
on this list. _____ What gender is Linux. ______ I have for the purposes
of this discussion researched, prepared, panned, patched and generally made
up the following Linux mythology.

Linux was born the child of Linus of Torvalds, in the snowy reaches of
Linus' Scandinavian home. Linus had planted his seed in the womb of the
beautiful and nurturing Mrs. Open-Source Torvalds. It is said that in the
early years of the decade of the Lord nineteen hundred and ninety, Linux
sprang from that nurturing cove and was released into the fields of the
Internet, where Linux has grown up ever since. At first Linux was feeble,
lacked direction and was outcast by the other children. But, Linux was
strong at heart and soon made many friends who helped Linux grow up and be
accepted by the other kids. And soon the child of Linus found direction and
the righteous path. Linus had looked upon his child and seen how strong
Linux was becomming. He also saw the devastation that the evil Lord Gates
was wreaking on the playground Linux was growing up in. And so it is said
that Linus was raising Linux to challenge Gates and his evil hordes of
Windows which had killed and dismembered Linux' Unix family and all who
dared to challenge Lord Gates. At first, no one dared to even speak of
Linux's name, as all the town criers were in fear of Gates. But Linux was
not afraid, and soon went upon the epic journey for world domination to
free the world from the grasp of evil.

__back to the gender__.... I would argue that Linux is a girl, but with
some male personality traits. Linux can multi-task, and men don't seem to
be good at that. When you wake Linux she likes to talk a lot before letting
you say a word. Men seem to flock around her, and grep her :). But
sometimes you can talk with Linux in command-line mode, which is more male.
Linux also often sits idle, which boys are good at. Linux can be a bit hard
to figure-out or configure. hummm ;) Linux does most of the actual work,
without stopping or complaining like most of the other children.. Notice
how men usually complain when asked to do anything. Not Linux. Linux runs
on all sorts of systems, she's very compatible with everyone. Linux tends
to decorate her X-windows home in lots of different ways, and she likes to
be able to do things in more than one way. So I'm pretty convinced she's a
she.. any arguments to the contrary will come soon I'm sure... but so far I
think Linux is a girl.
