  Also Netscape Mail.

StarOffice has a Corel Draw clone.

You also have irc clients, ICQ for Java, Netscape, Linux X based
or console based games, (for example, xdoom and xquake, though not free
by nature).
There are good spreadsheets around, whether in the office like packages,
and others, like WinS.

You have a few choices of the way your desktop will look like, starting
from the ancient twm, through Motif based Window managers, OpenView based
window managers, fvwm/fvwm2 which are an improvement of twm, fvwm95 - that
is if you liked the way Win95's desktop looks like, etc etc...

In any case, a better & more accurate answer would require you to define
your "day to day needs".

Also, no one mentioned, but if you code, you have a variety of compilers
& interpreters to chose from (C/C++, Java, Pascal, Fortran, Basic, Perl,
tcl/tk and expect, Objective C , etc etc).
