That it works under DOS shows that HW is OK, IMHO.
In addition to what Yonathan said consider the following: There are 3
AHA-1542 out there: A, B and C. The F means it has a floppy port which
should be disabled unless you  use it (middle DIP, I think). Those 3
versions are not 100% compatible (at least under Novell NetWare  :-), so
check that aha1542.c for info on that issue. Another problem could be DMA
which is a bit problematic on AHA1542 and should be switched off in most
cases.
