I think you need to look into mod_proxy sources.
The function is proxyerror.
And I didn't ever see Apache to erve any webs... ;)

They are both HTTP responce codes, AFAIK.

ErrorDocument doesn't change any errors, AFAIK. It does change document,
which is sent with an error. Anyway, form source I see that all the proxy
errors are "500 Proxy error".
