Re: Yet Another Stupid Question

I may be able to help a bit here I think.
I quite recently upgraded from a 486 DX2/66 to a Pentium II/233. Obviously
everything runs much faster, and not only because of the processor upgrade
but also because of the faster graphics card, more RAM etc.
However, the interesting thing is to compare the different ratio of
acceleration between DOS/Windows 95 on the one hand and Linux on the other.
I run two similar programs (Sinclair QL emulators), one under DOS (not
Windows), the other under Linux. On other computers (according to the
author's benchmarks and my previous computer) the Linux version runs about
20% slower than the DOS version. while on the Pentium II they run at the
same speed. This means that the 32-bit optimization of the Pentium II makes
Linux run 20% faster, relative to other computers, than DOS. Of course it is
possible that it is simply because DOS performance on the PII is crap, but I
tend to believe the former, as altogether I got the feeling that Linux was
far more accelerated than DOS/Windows.
