If you would take look on one of Linux-kernel archives, this topic is
discussed actively there. Seems that gcc is over-optimising some lines in
the code (i.e., it thinks - mistakenly - that the code
does nothing and throws it away). Didn't have time to understand what
exaclty is the problem ;) Look at the archives for the info.
