Well, I somehow think it's not completely right. Or it's exaggerated, or
it's private initiative of some dumb m$ employee...
The reason is simple: first, if M$ shows that they are really in fear of
Linux (and not regarding it as "something not enough serious to even talk
about", as they pose now) - their image of "unbeatable" and "best for
anything" will suffer. Secondly, they couldn't have it secret anyway,
given every move from their side is monitored and they have DOJ on their
backs. Just one unsatisfied employee on any side of the deal would bring
it public very fast. Or one good journalist in search for scoop... It
would be really stupid from their side to do it now, when everyone is
watching...
On the other side, they acted stupid not once. If they will again - good
for us. Inhibiting Linux distribution from M$ side can do nothing except
more publicity for Linux and more bad press for M$ (and more evidence for
DOJ, if you want).
Thirdly, I really do not think Compaq has to be threatened... They aren't
the biggest Linux zealots and never were. I would believe in something
along the lines of medium-size vendor and stupid M$ sales-droid, saying
"you can't sell both us and them!".
