COMPAQ ethernet card

First, I applaud your choice of distribution!

My /usr/src/linux/Documentation/networking/tlan.txt says that it's
supported, although I'm using kernel version 2.2.0pre1, so maybe an
older one doesn't yet support it. Since for all I know Debian comes
with all the network drivers compiled as modules, you should try to
put "tlan" in /etc/modules. Write back to tell us if that worked. If
it didn't we'll discuss compiling a new kernel.
