The last time I used an unchanged Slackware /etc/inittab it started X in
R/L 4, without xdm. I don't remember where the configs are, but look at
the exact invocation in R/L 4 and RTFM for that program. I think that the
inittab startup uses the system default .xinitrc and that you have not
edited, or something like this. Find it and edit it.
