Re: Hebrew Pine

Yes ! Thank you, Asher, I oopsed my mailbox directories once and certain
addresses are gone ;(
I'd like to make one big wish to everyone maintaining a ftp site that is
not indexed by HTML or a search engine:
PLEASE run `ls -lR | gzip` after you do maintenance on the archive, at
least for the /pub tree, and leave the output as [pub-]ls-lR.gz (or .zip
or whatever you think is best). Looking for stuff in a FTP archive is a
punishment otherwise, not to mention that almost no-one knows about them.
(If you think otherwise, then you must be one of the guys who like to read
the telephone directory at random, just to see new names).
Also, leaving the file in the root directory with this name may allow
simple robots to index the contents for external indexes. The only thing
that is a MUST is the name (must have <ls-lR|ls_lR|ls+lR|LS0LR>.<gz|zip>).
This is all that is needed and it is GREAT help.
If you are so big that the size of this file is a concern, then you
probably don't need it, as someone is already indexing you as is. In this
case a line in the /README to point to this indexer URL (on the same host
or elsewhere) would be great. If not indexed, a pointer to /ls-lR.gz in
the README would be good.
One nice side effect is, that anonymous FTP users have less excuses to
try to get to areas they are not supposed to get to (and thus, those
entries in the logs that point to such abuse, are less in nubers and more
useful...).
Later, one could collect these files that relate to Linux and make an
index page and add it to www.linux.il. I don't think that the ftp area on
vipe and other places here that have good stuff are used really well...
(but I wouldn't know).
thanks,
Peter
