If you're going to have the extra disk, why not to use (kernel-based) RAID?

Nothing's better than RAID. Plus, you get a performance enhancement (not RAID-0,
that is).

BRU + DAT (at home, BRU + Travan) + some custom scripts to run from cron
periodically.
