gdb and strace mal-functioning in a telnet console

I have a problem with gdb and strace on a Linux host which I can access
only through telnet. When I compile a program with debugging information
and then invokes gdb with it, and run it from the debugger - then gdb get
stuck. The only way I can release it is if I kill the debugged process
with SIGKILL or kill gdb (with SIGTERM).

Similiarly, if I type "strace ls" then strace prints
"execve("/bin/ls"...)" and then gets stuck. This time, I can terminate it
with Ctrl+C.

Does anybody have any idea what is causing this problem and how to resolve
it?

TIA,
