It doesn't do r2l in the same way that, say, hebpico does. I'm not
sure it's even called r2l, it's actually just pushmode.
And it doesn't re-define backspace to work properly in Hebrew mode,
too. Bummer.
I've just found a Debian package for the good old Mule 2.3 that's
supposed to do real r2l. We'll see if that solves the problem.
