The annoying NE2000 card.
OK
3 ppl answered me. i tried what every1 said, and it still doesnt work.
Ill answer every1 who tried to help me in 1 letter so as not to mailbomb
the list.
Ill describe the problem again
1) i have a PnP card that i assign values to in lilo conf. the card
SUCCESSFULLY accepts those parameters and puts itself on IRQ 10 and IO
0x220 accordingly. i dont have a sound blaster in this machine and there
are no IRQ or IO conflicts. i can also assign it an IRQ and IO using
ISAPnP (i got 1.9 installed) - only then i have to compile the driver as a
module because Ill need to load it after the ISAPNP. its currently
compiled into the kernel and the values get assigned before it loads.
2) i get a 'device' called eth0 - which means the card is supposed to be
alive.
3) at this point everything still LOOKs normal so i run the IFCONFIG
command to set up a network interface on this device (eth0). i give myself
an IP (from this point i give myself 10.0.0.3)
4) everything still looks normal. i run the ROUTE command so that the
computer sends out all packets that are intended for 10.0.0.x over the
interface on eth0.
5) all should be ok. right? well i ping my own IP (10.0.0.3, not loopback
127.0.0.1) and pings come back. i dont know about linux, in 95 this is an
indicator that the net card worx.
6) i ping another machine on the net - 10.0.0.1 for instance and the pings
dont come back. i try pinging the linux box (10.0.0.3) from 10.0.0.1 - and
the pings still dont come back. all hardware, wiring and termination is
OK. when i ran 95 on the linux box it worked with the same HW and
connections.
so......
1) Tuvik Becker -
the route command u suggested is basically the same route command i tried,
with the "dev" before eth0 - that according to the route manual is
omittable.
2) Ariel Biener -
i tried like you said - setting the IP to 10.0.0.3 instead of 10.0.0.0 and
assigning the broadcast address as follows:
ifconfig eth0 10.0.0.3 netmask 255.0.0.0 broadcast 10.255.255.255
route add -net 10.0.0.0 netmask 255.0.0.0
route table:
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags MSS Window irtt Iface
10.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 255.0.0.0 U 1500 0 0 eth0
ifconfig:
inet addr is now 10.0.0.3
Bcast is 10.255.255.255
Mask is 255.0.0.0
same problem. all seems ok, except i cant ping other computers on the net.
Schlomo Schapiro -
ok, like i already said, i tried using 10.0.0.3 --> didnt help
i know SB's take up 0x0220, but there isnt one in this box. no HW
conflicts and, like i said, this HW configuration worx under 95.
as for us being related... i dunno, maybe :-)
like before - any help is welcome and 10x... :-)
Regards
