Well, it's an 'old' 2.0.33 kernel, and some of your assumptions at least
are correct. The report was not meant as any kind of benchmark. It can
be inferred, however, that at least for a wide variety of academic uses,
Linux on Intel platforms is a very strong player in the 'heavy
workstation' field. Don't forget that traditionally,this is one of the
strongholds of large workstation manufecturers. Today more and more labs
that demand large computing power turn to linux solutions - whether it
be beowulf type clusters or simply strong workstations.
Without generalizing the conclusions too much, my bottom line remains
the same. I got more power for my particular needs, for about 1/10th the
price of a strong SGI machine, for example.
