This is right for RedHat, on a Debian system the /usr/bin/X11/X is
a wrapper that works a bit different then just a symlink. You choose the
Xserver to run from the file /etc/X11/Xserver, it should be something like
/usr/bin/X11/XF86_<server_name> the second line tells the wrapper who is
allowed to run the X server, in your caes it should be Console.
For more information about X in Debian read the file
/usr/doc/X11/README.Debian.

I'm not sure whether you've done that, but did you run the xf86config
file? It should help you. If you have more questions you can email me
