Indeed, extending protocols is not a bad thing, as long as they stay
open. That's the bit Microsoft seems to miss in their response to the
publishing of the Halloween documents, at
http://www.microsoft.com/ntserver/highlights/editorletter.asp
Ed Muth, Microsoft Enterpise Marketing Group Manager, says there that
customers and shareholders want Microsoft to innovate and solve
problems that are currently unsovalble with the available open
protocols. That's why they want to de-commoditize them. Sorry? What's
the relation between the two?! I don't get it.
