Which uses two pairs: 1-2 and 3-6 (the numbers are the pins on
the RJ45 plug).

A crossed cable does this:

  1-3
  2-6
  3-1
  6-2

This last assertion is incorrect. 100Mb/s Ethernet can *not* work on longer
cables.

Two things to check with your scenario:

1. The cross-connection cable may be too *short*. This is not a joke;
   check it out. Try to use a longer cable (15m or more). At 100Mb/s,
   the high frequencies tend to generate inhibitively high crosstalk
   when the cable is very short.

2. Disable auto-negotiation (for half/full duplex and 10/100). Fix
   the stations on 100/FDX (or 100/HDX if you wish). Auto-negotiation
   tends to break in too many cases; piggyback may be one of them.

Good luck
