128 Mb RAM on a amibios

Hello there:)
Today I"ve encountered a strange thing:
PC was brought for installation, having 128 Megs, splitted into
64+32+32 SDRAM DIMMs

Installation went fine, but:
when booted, virtually everything failed to run, got SEGVs from kernel,
and after a while was halted, telling something like that:

#(INIT): process respawning too fast, halted for 5 minutes
#INIT: no more processes

The only remedy was: upgrade to 2.0.33 and limit memory to 64 Megs
This only a workaround, though. Is anybody aware of the real remedy?

If it is relevant, this machine is driven by P II 266 (NOT overclocked),
and has bios from AMI, very modern one

Any help will be appretiated:)
