If sound as a whole is not compiled into the kernel (mono or
modular) you have to recompile. I just installed SuSE 5.3 on
an older cdrom-less laptop and though I was pretty sure I had
sound configured, it was not the case :-(
And when I have recompiled and came to the sound configuration
options....my ESS1688 and even Crystal cards all seem to favor
this scenario (just an example that works for me):
Select Sound Blaster compatible
Select /dev/snd
Select midi
Select fm-synth
Change default IRQ from 7 to 5 (at least for Red Hat)
and the rest of the options should already be now
set to go [I happen to use 'make menuconfig', though
some friends like with tar (no BRU, etc) & backups, like 'make
config' ...they say there is _less chance_ of missing something
in the recompile...but that is a matter of taste, I believe].
Hope this helps some, not that recompiling is always the
most fun way to do something, but it is sometimes therapy
when you play with the system too much! :-) Perhaps the
list will correct me and give you a 30-second solution. I'm
humble enough :-)
Take care, as I *rearely* respond to this venerable list.
I hold ILUG in higher regards to SVLUG and I think that
is commendable...even with Ira in the States ;)
