change your mouse protocol in /etc/XF86Config (or /etc/X11/XF86Config)
to "MouseSystems", and device to "/dev/gpmdata"
Then, check if you have /dev/gpmdata on your system. If you don't, create
it  using "mkfifo /dev/gpmdata"
Then, edit /etc/rc.d/rc.local (or /etc/rc<what is appropriate>/S<??>gpm)
so it will start gpm with "-R" switch.
It will help.
