My 2 bits:

If you boot from SCSI devices, then you have probably turned off the EIDE
interfaces in the BIOS. Turn them back on if off (only hda,hdb i.e. IDE0),
and make sure that the BIOS drive parameter table contains nothing at that
entry. It is possible that your boot configuration confuses the probe that
detects the cdrom on eide.
