This question reminds me. There is wonderfull ftp search server.
Using it I have found debian package and some sources.
As most serious and heavy servers it runs on FreeBSD :{) ( just a joke )

FTP search mirrors

     http://ftpsearch.ntnu.no/ftpsearch is the URL to the main FTP search
     server. This machine is a 200 MHz Pentium Pro PC with 512 MB RAM and
     40 GB disk running FreeBSD 3.0-CURRENT. The ls listings are
     collected directly from ftp servers. 
     http://ikke.idi.ntnu.no:8000/ftpsearch is the URL to a test server
     where the real development occurs. It may be down most of the time.
     Data is collected by fetching compressed ls listings from
     ftpsearch.ntnu.no. This machine is a 180 MHz PPro PC running FreeBSD
     3.0-current. 
     http://ftp.sunet.se:8000/ftpsearch is the URL to a server indexing
     ftp.sunet.se only. It uses brute force on an NFS mounted data set. 
     http://sunsite.fri.uni-lj.si:8000/ftpsearch is the URL to a server
     indexing ftp servers in Slovenia. 
     http://unicorn.netlab.is.tsukuba.ac.jp:8000/ftpsearch is the URL to
     a server indexing some ftp servers in Japan. 
     http://woland.afti.nsu.ru:8000/ftpsearch is the URL to a server
     indexing some ftp servers in the Russian Federation. 
     http://ftp.riken.go.jp:8000/ftpsearch is the URL to a server
     indexing ftp.riken.go.jp only. 
     http://ftpsearch.belnet.be:8000/ftpsearch is the URL to a server
     indexing 400-500 ftp servers worldwide. 
     http://archie.is.co.za/ftpsearch is the URL to a server indexing ftp
     servers in South Africa. 
     http://ftpsearch.city.ru:8000/ftpsearch is the URL to a server
     indexing ftp servers in the Russian Federation.
