Absolutely right. 1-2 are a pair. 3-6 are a pair. 4-5 are a pair.
7-8 are a pair.
Each pair must be twisted within itself. MUST. Won't work any other
way. (Well, may do 10Mb, short distance, many drops...).
Now: As I said before, in a crossed cable, you connect the *twisted*
pair 1-2, to the *twisted* pair 3-6 (respectively! 1 to 3 and 2 to 6),
and vice versa. This connects the Tx pair to the Rx pair on each end.
If you don't do the pairing properly, it won't work.

It is correct - only your wording may be confusing: It's not "inside
the UTP cable". Inside the cable there are no numbers... It's on the
RJ45 jack. In a crossed cable, the same pair that goes to 1-2 on one
end, will go to 3-6 on the other end. And vice versa.
