For catdoc, look at:
    http://www.ice.ru/~vitus/works/works_unix.html

For word2x, look at:
    http://word2x.astra.co.uk/

For MSWordView, look at:
    http://www.csn.ul.ie/~caolan/docs/MSWordView.html

All are very bad, except for one (commercial) which is
(unfortunately) not available for Linux, but only for non-x86
UNIXes:
    http://www.inso.com/products/corporate/qvp-corp/html/qvpunix.htm
(this one supports, in addition to Word/DOC, more than 200 formats!)

Even under Word 95 it is not possible :-)
I wanted to "print" a Word document into another file in PostScript
format, and I was surprised to find that Microsoft cancelled (!)
its support in "Generic PostScript"; Yes, there are various drivers
for PostScript printers, but when you use one of them, you must
print the result file to this specific printer. I even called
Microsoft, and was answered (very kindly!), that indeed, support for
PostScript was cancelled. So I pointed my browser at
http://www.adobe.com , and found a PostScript driver for Windows 95.
