Look at http://www.freetype.org/projects.htm , under the sub-title
"The X11 TTF font server". You will find information and links about
two TTF font servers (xfsft and xfstt). I believe that the quality
of xfsft is higher, since it is based on the original xfs of the X
Distribution and on the technology of FreeType.
In addition, there is a strange development of somebody from Japan,
called "X-TrueType Server":

Some UNIXes (I think also Caldera) include "Fontastic" which is a
commercial font server supporting TTF. Even if you don't have it but
only an access to such a system, you can use it combined with
"fstobdf" in order to generate BDFs (or PCFs) of all the sizes (and/
or transformations) you need.
And finally, you can use FontMonger or the amazing Fontographer
(both are commercial) to convert TTF fonts to Type1 fonts.
I think the best of all the options here is xfsft:
