I am not sure I understand what you are doing. I presume you are
trying to install from a RH5.1 CD. If so, why don't you create a boot
and a rescue floppies, boot the first one (or boot the CD itself if
you can), insert the CD, and follow the menus? It asks whether you
want to install or upgrade, and at some point it also asks what you
want installed. It leaves you a log of the update with all the rpm -U
commands etc somewhere (it tells you where), in case you are
interested.

It takes care of the dependencies by itself (at least most of the time
in my modest experience). I'd guess that doing this (i.e. rpm -U) from
the command line in random order will probably lead to a major
headache - never tried it. After installation/upgrade you will have to
upgrade the packages listed in the errata by hand or by glint, but it
is usually no problem.

If you have already screwed up your dependencies by experimenting, and
if your computer is a standalone home workstation, you *might*
consider backing up the important stuff from your /home, /etc, and
/usr/local, and install from scratch rather than upgrade.

How about The Official RH Linux User's Guide at http://www.redhat.com ?
