RE: upgrading from redhat 5.0 to 5.1
hi
tnx for your answer. it is not a server it just studying computer.
the problem is that i don't know with witch pack to start and
how to follow this path.
if i do it with rpm command line most of the time it gives massages
about dependencies of other packs, and i don't want to install
every thing just to satisfy it and don't tall me not to bover about
space etc. after intalling some pack some of the things stop to work
and i know witch pack to install to solve this.
is there any doc file that give some info on all this...

I did it the messy way, without taking the server down, the only time our
server is down is after kernel upgrades for a few minutes.
I upgrades all the packages starting from the libc, libXXX etc...
Since 5.0 is already glibc, 5.1 is a maintenance release not something
totally
new as 5.0 was.
Upgrading from 4.2 to 5.1 will require using the boot CD for sure.
If you care about uptime and it's a server, I think this is the best way.
If it's a workstation and you don't care about uptime use the boot CD.
