In fact, the do not really *need* it. They (OSS makers) inserted the check
just to avoid problems like "your module kills my kernel" - because they
sell it, so they have responcibility even when user messes it up. But
generally it may be possible to force old sound module into a new kernel.
Or may not - it depends...
Also, a bit of RTFM on /usr/src/linux/Documentation/modules.txt may be
useful.

Alan Cox has backport of 2.1 modular sound for about half a year now,
IIRC. Just install the patch and enjoy. I think, the only cause it's not
in 2.0-standard is because 2.2 is so near...
