[Q]: Intranet tools

Hi everybody,

Can anybody suggest suitable tools for the following applications?

I. Yahoo-like links catalog.

Basically, I'd like to have a tool to store various WWW links based on
multi-level categories. The ideal example is Yahoo: I want something
just like that (well, I mean the general idea and the search
facility), so that Intranet users would be able to look up certain
links based on either categories or a search and to add new links
using the very same WWW interface.

II. Something to manage the on-line articles

I've got quite a number of on-line articles in various formats (DVI,
PS, PDF, HTML etc). I'd like to give users an ability to browse the
collection through the WWW interface and to be able to search at least
through the articles' meta-data (title, author, abstract etc). Also,
users should be able to add new articles to the repository.

So far, I know the only way to implement something like that. It is to
get some small or not-very-small DBMS, like m*SQL or PostgreSQL or a
commercial one and use it to store the articles' meta-data and URL's
to the articles themselves. Then one has to add an appropriate CGI
script to implement queries on the database and display the results
combined with the URLs. The same (in the reverse order) applies to
the procedure of adding the new article. The only [minor] complication
is a need of explicit insertion of the articles' abstracts to the
database and inability of serching through the articles themselves.

I'd like to hear your opinions, suggestions, and experiences (success
stories?) on the problems. Of course, free tools are more preferred
(just because it helps the free community, although money matter as
well :-)

Thanks in advance,
