Right. already done that before posting my original question.

Right. I have changed the reference to linuxrc to insmod /lib/aic7xxx.o,
(adding it to the ramdisk ofcourse) and fixed the compressed ramdisk image.
I also re-ran LILO. The result was, as I have noted before was tons of I/O
errors after the kernel has finished booting.
