Networking problems with new kernel.

Hi all,
First of all I apologize to all those who wondered where did I disapear to...
but too much studing/working caused me to abandon this list for quite some
time now.

Anyway, and without any further delays, here's the new problem:
I'm trying to work with the new kernel (2.1.90+) on a debian 1.3.1r6 dist. and
I'm getting very bizzare networking problems:
the 'route add -net 127.0.0.0' command replys with SIOCADDRT:invalid argument
(SIOCADDRT is the ioctl command for adding a new route to the table,
but if you don't know anything about that I assume you can stop reading
this now...;-)
Only when I try 'route add -net 127.0.0.0 netmask 255.0.0.0 lo' it actually
adds the route, BUT with mss 0 (mss is like mtu...should be like the
device's mtu from ifconfig normally...).
When I'm trying to set up a ppp connection, I got more strange behaviour:
the interface [ppp0] is down (and I have to manually ifconfig up it)
and the routing table shows the routing as they should be (hmmm, well,
after I'm fighting it for a minute or teo) , but again, with mss of 0 for both
the host and the default gw.
It's needless to say that the connection isn't working at all...

any ideas???
btw, I've tried allready to use a new netbase/ppp packages.
