[svlug] Subject: "Future of Linux" full report (fwd)

I was going to sit and write a nice report on the resaults of the "Future
of Linux" meeting from last week, but lcking time, it got delayed, and now
a better one was published. (see below)

the main points to know (if you don't want to read the entire thing):

- only days after Intel announced the Xeon, VA Researched managed to patch
the kernel (with their help!) to run a Quad-Xeon system at the show. I
  saw it myself, ultracool.
- Intel promisses the Linux community tight support and help with all
future Intel platforms, they see a great future for Linux and will work
around NDA limitations to help accelerate the development of the latest
Intel features in Linux (36bit addressing for 64GB memory, 16-, 32- and
64-way SMP, and ofcourse Merced optimization)
- Oracle 8 for linux will start selling at March of '99. Although Oracle
said just a month ago they do not even consider the port, the resaults
of the meeting made them change their minds!

I've completed my detailed report on the Future of Linux panel last Tuesday
(it's a little over the top, but so it goes). Please let me know of any
errors or omissions you happen to catch.
