Ahh, another guy who runs as root after 10 PM ;) I am not alone anymore !

You built them back by HAND or did you REINSTALL sendmail from a package ?

2 possibilities:
a) You have the wrong sendmail.cf for your configuration. Sendmail is
picky about DNS.
b) As in a. and bind is not running and/or configured to resolve your host
name.
Fix: Install the 'stand-alone DNS-less' sendmail.cf, or as suits your
system. If you reinstalled sendmail fm. package, then it has hosed your
/etc/sendmail.cf. Reinstall it from backups.

Find out how sendmail is started. It would be like -bd -q30m (this is
standard from packages). You want something faster on a stand-alone host
(I use -q1m but I'm not connected to the Internet).
