answer is yes and no. Yes, Linux can surf the net, edit office files, and
play games, but no, it won't run any random windows application unless it
was specifically ported to it (and those are not many. there are many
Linux tools or unix tools ported to Linux that will give you those
capabilities though).
I haven't read the specific Haaretz piece you are referring to (I suppose
it's Captain Internet?) since I'm currently in California, I sugest you
make contact with the Israeli Linux users' group, as they sometimes
arrange installation parties, and will help you do take the first steps
into the world os Linux.
