Re: Choice between distributions
Hi!
I wrote that after fixing some problems in RH 5.0, you get the best
RedHat system available. Of course, everybody asked me what are these
fixes. So instead of answering everyone personally, I use these list.
(and if you get this message also as BCC, it is because you were one
of the askers).

I wish there was a permanent sequence of actions to be done.
Unfortunately, it depends on your configuration and architecture.
For example, I used a replacement of routed (I don't remember its
name) without knowing exactly what it does. So I didn't have routing.
"rpm -e" didn't help, and I needed a hack in order to replace it back
to routed. About half of the faxes hanged up, since I found out that
I must add a line to the config files of mgetty. PPPD didn't work (as
the default user's shell in /etc/passwd) till I found out that its
executable must be chmoded to 4711 (!). PPP clients still doesn't
have routing outside of my LAN.
But instead of giving up, please read the erratas (at RedHat site,
and http://onion.dyn.ml.org/~robert/redhat-5.0.html, last time I
checked, it was down), and try to find problems and fix them. Use the
logs (e.g. /var/log/messages), and if there is nothing helpful, try
debug mode. If you find cryptic messages (e.g. +FHS:74), search them
in www.dejanews.com. After all the fixes, you'll get an excellent OS.
Good luck, and don't be afraid!
