Re: DVD-ROM/RAM...
Hi Ze'ev (and others):
1. DON'T buy DVD-RAM. It's non standard yet and there are battles about
standardization for DVD-RAM (comptetion comes from HP, NEC, Matsushita and
others - with total written schemes), so I suggest to you to buy the DVD-ROM.
2. As for DVD-ROM: I recommend: Creative, Toshiba, Philips and Sony. If you can
hold your breath for 3-4 months, a new generation should come out (4x original
DVD speed, faster initialization).
3. As for mpeg-2, if you have a fast machine (350Mhz and up) and a very fast
graphics card (Riva TNT, Matrox G200, and other AGP based cards who are
considered fast), then you can skip the Mpeg-2 card (saves you 100$). Biggest
disadvantages: No-AC3, heavy processor work, picture could skip if the processor
busy on using the hard disk.
4. As much as I know (and I'm looking very close about this issue) - there is no
program yet to play DVD on Linux, nor DVD file system for linux is available :(
PS: Starting today, I'm a slashdot author. Yeepee :)
Thanks
Hetz
