Modem-Sharing
Hello,
WARNING: Don't play around with hdparm and old harddisks / controllers !
1. I crashed my system twice last week with " hdparm -c 1 -a 8 -m 16
/dev/hda ". They are all options that hdparm -i claims to be valid.
Nevertheless it crashed my filesystem. After reinstalling everything from
scratch twice I won't touch it any more. The hardware is a WD540 disk and a
HIPP + 486-boad with onboard VLB ide controller. On my other computer
Pentium, 430VX, IBM 4.3 GB disk, there was no problem applying those
settings (and dma, of course). Comments are welcome.
2. I have now my modem in the Linux-box and internet-access works fine.
There are though a few remaining problems with the setup:
1. diald won't dial when mgetty runs. The effect is that chat starts
talking to the modem but appearently never get's an answer. I put the lock
option into diald and it creates a proper lock-file, but it still won't
work. Any suggestion/solution will be very welcome, since I really would
like to be able to dial home :-)
2. There are a couple of applications I can't do any more with the modem
in the linux box and out of my Pentium:
* Play a modem-modem game with my pal's (most games don't support IP and if
they do, I doubt that it works over masquerading)
* send faxes from the Pentium (running Win95 and WinNT)
The easiest solution would be a way to share the modem over the net to the
Pentium so that it can use it directly. In order to reach that I thought of
2 solutions:
1. Is there a modem-share program to share a modem from unix (linux) to
Win95 ?
2. Is it possible to connect the Win95 to the linux-box by null-modem cable
and have a little program on the linux-box copy data between the two
serial-ports (with hardware-handshake) without interfering a mgetty/diald
setup on the same modem
Now, if I could find a prog to send faxes from Win95 over the linux-box in a
CONVIENIENT way (like the windows-fax-program emulates a printer) I could
live with a null-modem cable or wven stop playing modem-modem games :-(
Any ideas / Did anyone ever try something like that ?
