Re: Red Hat 5:0 <-> RH 4.2

A short comment about the recent debate about stability of RH5.0 .

You must make the distinction between stability of the distribution, and
maturity of glibc.
The distribution seems to be rather stable. I think no less than 4.2 was
when released. However, there are still major problems with glibc, and
that is a thing that will take some time to remedy. Most of the things I
tried worked ok, but when I tried to compile some heavy simulation code
(that runs perfectly on various platforms, including earlier versions of
RH), I got various internal compiler bugs related to random() etc.

Bottom line - it's a nice system, but at least for development purposes
I don't think it's mature. Yet.

I was forced to downgrade, and decided to give debian a chance this
time. It works fine. I intend to write a short report after I get some
more feeling of the system, to describe my experience with Debian vs.
RedHat, as that seems to be a FAQ.
