Well, I said "_practically_ any". For sure every module handling an
interrupt-driven device should be recompiled and (almost for sure) everything
that uses DMA. But I'm not a kernel hacker either, so you may get more precise
answer from other people. On the other hand, I was told, many new distributions
are shipped with the SMP kernel by default.
