Partitioning with Ext2/FAT32

Hi.
I bought me a big fat and ugly 8.4 Giggie disk for a mass storage for my
home.
now at the beginning i said what the hell and put 1 Ext2 partition on it.
then i saw Im losing hundreds of MB of space.
what would the optimal file system be (and how many partitions) for such a
disk? i know i can divide it into 2 FAT32 partitions with 4K clusters
which is GOOOOD. can Ext2 do it better? most files on this disk are 3-4MB
in size (no small file cluttering).

                Regards
