All of your 5 items are basically one big thing - ADO is implemented
with OLD DB/ODBC and OLE is a subset of COM. OLE automitation is the old
name for what became later ActiveX and it is too a subset of COM
DCOM is merly COM with networking abilties (COM across different)
computers. AFAIK, COM/DCOM is not implemented on Unix or Linux but a
parallel technology (some would say better, but lets leave the holly
wars alone... ;-) exists. This technology is called CORBA.
Although CORBA is a different standart, and is not support by MS, nor is
it compitable with it, it can still accomplish the same targets and more
(for example, it supports multiple platforms, something which COM/DCOM
cant really do for obvious reasons). Thats it - you can't run an ActiveX
object on linux. but you can acheive the same target using CORBA.
This is the state of things AFAIK. I may be wrong on some points. If so
please correct me.
