	Did you try Debian hamm distribution? After install base system
you will got a menu with something like this:
	Select packages for:
[ ] Network Server
[ ] Developer workstation
[ ] Web surfing ws
...

	In this way setup will select set for packages for choseen role
of computer. I think it is quite enough in most cases.

	you can quit dselect in last instalation phase and put in
/var/lib/dpkg file called status from original system made by selecting,
but not instaling yet packages. After that just run dselect->install
