Try to re-generate the fonts.dir file. Run
mkfontdir /usr/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/
..and see if this helps.
Other possible problems:
- bad fonts.alias
- fonts compressed the weird way. The best way is to compress the PCF
fonts with 'compress' and make their extensions .Z, although this may
get more flexible in the recent servers.
