Check wtmp and utmp. They are normally under /etc as soft links. Find out
where they point, it is possible that they point to something that is
gone. They should be in /var/log or /var/adm. utmp is normally a further
link into /var/run/utmp, and is 640 root.root, and utmp is in /var/log or
/var/adm and is root.root 644. who uses the utmp. See also man last.
