whay am I still using windows
Hello there
As I told before, I've tried to install Linux on my
computer as a wrokstation.
Im working as a web-programmer and I thoght that
since my work is done mainly for unix systems I can
do without windows…right??
Wrong, thogh I've installed linux as our wem/mail/ftp
server. I think that there is stil a long way ahead
before we can use it as workstations. The first
problem was to configure the computer's hareware, but
with the help of few linux gurus in this list I've
meneged to fixs all the errors in the cd
configuration that didn't disturbd the previuos
installed winnt4.0 with hebrew support workstation.
Then I've endlessly compiled the kernel to get my
sound card to work properly and my network card to be
reckognized, when it was all done ( for some resone
the make menuconfig didn't saved the sound file
configuration -I finnaly changed the default port in
the source code and it worked).
I then passed to the next step of configuring the
network. No metter what I did on the server a RedHat
4.2 linux) and on the client (Slackware 3.03) I
couldn't mount the server hd in read /write mode (or
at least the dirctory wich I have to read and write
from). Not to mention that I couldn't see nor be
seen by the Mac's in our office or by any of the win
machines ( I installed samba and compiled the
appletalk into the kernl, but couldn't find help
about the rest of the apple configuration, and the
samba source code fail to compile on my installation).
Ok.. so I can do with ftp only..now what? I have
looked for hebrew writing solutions , configured the
X windows to read my keyboard properly, and set the
xterm to work. But the vi /vim / elvis / jove / pico
that I've used refused to get the copy /paste
commands from the mouse. I couldn't find Emacs
hebrew support, and not a single software to read
word95 + documents that were sent attached to my
email (yes -they were all hebrew documents).
Today , after 12 days of struggle I've formated my
hard disk and installed windows 95. It took me 2
hours to get it up and running. I know that I'll keep
using linux on my home computer to surf the net and
post emails, and as the server of our company (and it
is much more stable server then the previous NT they
have used), I know linux is a great OS. Now I also
know that linux is not a good solution as a work
station.
