What you need is PARIDE... The PARIDE subsystem is supported
through kernel (either 'built-in' or loadable module) starting at
2.0.34/5 (I think so, I use 2.1.119) , you need to
compile 3 drivers into your kernel: (all under block devices)
1. The PARIDE subsystem.
2. A low-level driver for your device's controller (probabely the epat
driver for "shuttle" epat).
3. A high-level driver for your device (probabely the pt driver).

Then you can simply mount your tape as a normal block device,
make any fs etc.
