X Window: xcalc
very similar to Win Calc

It depends on what do you call good:
There is WordPerfect port for linux, together with Corel suite
There also are some "Office Productivity Packs" like
StarOffice or Applix
And there is LyX, WISIalmostWYG front-end to LaTeX

Quick Viewer: xv, very efficient, although somewhat
outdated, e.g. some new JPEG formats specs are not
supported. But sometimes, there is no alternative to good old
xv
PaintShop: GIMP and ImageMagick prove themself

That depends. One of the things that really helps is shell
(one of them, but I preffer tcsh) with all the
bells-and-whistles but it takes time to learn. For the
beginner i sujjest KDE as enviroment.
