This is wrong. Set netmask and broadcast the same:

For a class C netmask, line 10.0.0.0/24 (255.255.255.0) broadcast should
be 10.0.0.255

But don't use netmask 255.255.255.0 here, use 255.0.0.0 as in the
following:

Here, use a class A network, 10.0.0.0/8 (255.0.0.0) broadcast should be
10.255.255.255

No no no, again:

route add -net 10.0.0.0 netmask 255.255.255.0
               ^^^^^^^^

make sure it's 10.0.0.0 and not 10.0.0.3 !!! 10.0.0.0 is the network.
10.0.0.3 is the eth0 interface IP address.

So again, to sum it up, just cut and paste:

ifconfig eth0 10.0.0.3 netmask 255.0.0.0 broadcast 10.255.255.255
route add -net 10.0.0.0 netmask 255.0.0.0

This will work.
