Re: A call for arms - the future of Hebrew in the digital age
Although the monthly posted rules of this list prohibits messages
like "I agree!", I must say that: Any word of Doron was correct
and exact. Implicit (a.k.a. logical) IS the standard.
You can say: "Well, this is the standard, so what? We want to be
able to receive/send messages from/to those 'Hebrew' users" - I
can promise you that it will be possible. I cannot say how, since
the exact details are not known for me too, but relax, and be sure
that UNIX users are not going to enter a Getto (sorry, I didn't
find a better word. Blame my poor English, not my association).
Regarding to the "contribution" of M$: The commitees, founded by
Michael Eitan, asked the public to contribute software in various
areas. The time passed, and almost nobody contributed his stuff.
Did anybody prevent you from developing software and contributing
it to the public ? No. Now comes Steve (of Bill), and gives us
these 50's gifts. The government told him that the agreement would
include a special statement that would allow future adoption of
competing products, and he agreed even to that. Now what? What do
you want exactly? Do you want the PM to cancel the dinner with
him (as with Robin Coke^H^H^H^H Cook)? Or to ask him to fix the
Hebrew example in M$-Encarta before contributing gifts to Israel
("Mi SheToreach BeShabat (!), Ochel BeShabat". Check in your copied
Encarta). How Jews say? "Notnim Lecha - Tikach!".
Regarding to the "scoop" of Yediot-Acharonot from 26.4.98, which
"claimed" that everybody would have an Hebrew e-mail address etc.:
Very funny. I didn't read this article, but the ceremony on
20.4.98 (6! days before the article) was so public, with so many
VIPs participating and signing on the agreement, including Steve
Balmer (#2 of M$), Ruth Alon (#1 of Netvision), #1 of Bezeq, and
somebody from the government (Limor Livnat or the PM, I don't
remember). The newspapers wrote about the planned ceremony even
before. So what is the scoop?
P.S. Instead of "kitturim" and wasting our time in chatting through
this list, we should throw cream pies in the face of the visitor. It
could be more useful ;-)
