You need a modem with at least 'phone capability', i.e. plugs on the back.
Better, a modem with a Rockwell chipset, and voice.

These are supported by a package on sunsite called 'voice??' in modem
utilities somewhere. Works great, I've used it.

Many modems are Rockwell-based, look for a Rockwell sign on the chips even
if it says something else on the box.

Texas Instruments chipset modems are usualyy U.S. Robotics clones.
