tried linux's kernel IP accounting yet? it does sound like this is what
you need, and then use some perl script to use the data later on.

if you want to account for total traffic on a PHISICAL interface, perhaps
a package named 'MRTG' can do that (i know it does for various routers,
maybe they also have unix modules, and in any event, one may add their own
modules to MRTG). MRTG can also display nice graphs and got a web
interface with the package.

if you need something for the PHISICAL devices themselves, i'm afraid
you'll need to hack down the kernel's code to add more data in being
exported on /proc , but i think it's not that hard, if you have any
intention to invest in programming this..
