I have the palm pilot and I use it with linux ,
There is a great support in linux for the palm pilot , and this support
include backups, compilers (gcc java assembler), transfer utils ...
 
There is even an application called x-copilot , which is a pilot 
emulator that runs also on linux .

The web is full with these things , just go to www.pilotgear.com
The only thing that I think is missing is a nice pilot gui like the
one that come with the Billy-O.S ...

I myself wrote a few application to that litle machine on linux and
it works great ... ( like the old appleII days ...).
