First of all you can only use Qt (and thus KDE) in C++.  If you would like to
use C,  Perl, Scheme, etc.  you can only use Gnome.  Although you can also use
C++ for Gnome.

Secondly, I got the impression the KDE apps use more memory - the Gnome terminal
uses less memory than the KDE one, although rxvt uses less than both.

As far as speed goes, the kwm is quite slow, but you can run KDE apps in a
regular wm too, and this doesn't mean KDE apps are slower.

I'd choose Gnome - prettier (themes coming soon!), less memory, faster
(subjective feeling), and most of all GNU.
