The Future Biggest UNIX Software House

A controversial story:

Quietly and progressively, Microsoft becomes the biggest software
house for ...UNIX !

Even after ignoring its shares in various UNIX companies (e.g.
SCO), this giant has more and more stuff for UNIX, most of it as
a freeware (but not open source). Among the stuff: FrontPage 98
Server Extensions for various platforms (including Linux) and web
servers (Apache and Netscape), Internet Explorer 4, Visual Source
Safe, Outlook Express, NetShow, and many others. Some of the
packages were ported to UNIX using a tool of a half Israeli
company - MainSoft from Or-Yehuda. Currently there are only 60
UNIX people in Microsoft, but expect this number to double itself
per a few months, and to exceed all the other big software houses
for UNIX (e.g. Oracle, Tivoli, ASK, SAP, etc.).

A new article about these people, is published at SunWorld:
http://www.sun.com/sunworldonline/swol-04-1998/swol-04-microunix.html?042198i

The UNIX people of Microsoft denied the rumors regarding to ports
of BackOffice stuff (IIS, Exchange) to UNIX, and said that Intel
based UNIXes (including Linux) are in the lowest priority (though
contrary to what is written in the article, there ARE Microsoft
packages which are available for Linux as well, such as FrontPage
Server Extensions). After all, these UNIXes are the direct
competitors of NT...
