Re: More updated FAQ
Hi,
Some remarks about the updated FAQ:
1. I agree with Yaron regarding the overall patronizing tone etc. And
yet, most of the FAQ is rather informative as it is, so I wouldn't
suggest rewriting it from scratch.
2. The 'movers and doers' section is indeed a bit infantile, but we can
let it be. However it should at least reflect reality in some remote
sense. Amos for one has not been on this list for quite a long while
now...
I'd suggest keeping a list of the people involved in maintaining the
various facades of the group, and perhaps another list of people who are
willing to give support to newbies on a personal email basis.
The first list should include only the people who are _currently_
involved with maintaining the two websites and the list itself, which
means: Jonathan, on whos machine linux.org.il runs ; Yaron who is the
webmaster of linux.org.il ; Evgeny, maintainer and webmaster of the
plasma-gate site ; Shlomi, current maintainer of the FAQ ; Ariel,
maintainer of the mailing list majordomo.
As for the rest - anyone who reads the list will get the picture
quickly.
3. Raphi Slepon's report/remarks/suggestions about linux installation,
while remaining humoristic, are no longer valid for most distributions.
We should at least add a remark to upease newbies' fears of the
installation process.
4.
> Q6.2) How do I increase the total number of filehandles in the system beyond 1024?
That's a rare example of a question that was brought up only once during
the whole existence of the linux-il mailing list (as far as I can
remember - correct me if I'm wrong). It really bewilders me to see that
question among the "FREQUENTLY Asked Questions".
5.
>Q3.2) What is one installing when one is installing Linux?
>What version of Linux should one install?
...
>RedHat 5.0 (known to be buggy. RedHat 5.1 is due soon.)
I think this is misleading. RedHat 5.0 is not buggier than any other
major distribution. The problem lies with some inherent
incompatibilities that glibc is responsible for. These might render
RH5.0 useless for some development needs (as is the case for me), but
for other purposes it's as stable and secure as other good
distributions, provided all the patches and fixes in the errata are
applied (which is just as true for RH4.2, considered one of the most
stable versions).
Anyway, I'd like to encourage Shlomi to keep the initiative. The FAQ
indeed needs some refreshing, and it's nice you took the task upon
yourself.
