Re: Strange memory consumption

Hi Ariel,

Well, as I said, the problem was more or less solved, so now I cannot give
any more information than I gave at the time I had it. (Well, I can try to
reproduce it just for you, but... ;-)
Anyway, now I think there were two symptoms that I mixed. The high load
was apparently caused in some mysterious way by the huge swap partitions
+ files. However, looking back on the top output, I now think there was
nothing wrong with the memory consumption. The kernel simply had a
lot of memory cached and buffered, since it had nothing better to do with
it. I've never looked into it too much before, but now I checked several
linux boxes, and it seems quite a normal phenomenon to always have most
of the memory reported as used due to caching+buffering. I would like to
know if your experience is different.

By the way, the matlab process was quite idle when top output was
printed, but when it ran it ran at a reasonable speed, given the load.
