MSDOS fdisk (slightly off topic)

Since this **story** involves LILO, I thought it might be of some
interest or maybe someday help someone. So I'm sending this even if
it is a bit off topic.

I have an old 386 that my kids use. Since it used to have LINUX on
it, it still boots with LILO. After installing a new Windoze scanner
driver(TWAIN), the LILO screen changed to LIL- and a locked up
computer. I don't know how or why this happened, but after wasting a
couple of hours backing up, virus checking, formatting, and even
re-partitioning, I remembered that the MSDOS fdisk has an
(undocumented?) option /mbr which supposedly fixes the master boot
record. I tried it, and it works. Of course it knows nothing about
LILO and wiped that out, but the 386 now boots again and my kids have
their computer back.
