"Sells" I mean not as in "brings big bucks", but as in "gains wide
popularity in corporate world". And surely you don't expect company with
tens of thousands computers to download Linux via modem on CEO's desktop?
;) The company that Compaq cares for just calls local distributor and says
"I want". And the distributor does.

You say that you choose OS by calling your dealer and asking what it
preinstalls??? I thought the process is vice-versa - you decide on OS, you
call the dealer and you say "I want my computers with OS 'ABC'
preinstalled". That's how things are done in not completely insane
environment.
The only question is that Compaq (or any large computer OEM) doen't really
care too much on individual users. Compaq cannot compete with n-th party
resellers on individual market. Corporations - that's what Compaq cares
for.
So it's only popularity of Linux itself, as viable platform (desktop,
server, anything) for a corporate or government or anything of
descent market - that will rule Compaq's decisions on Linux support or
lack of it. And this has nothing to do with Compaq or MOFT or anything -
more with Caldera and Red Hat and Applixware ;) And mass-media,
mass-media, mass-media...

Well', I really don't care. The fact that Gates is rich doesn't irritate
me. She yihiye bari. ;) The fact that company that he leads makes low
quality products and uses criminal or near-criminal methods to eliminate
competitors - that is what irritates me.
Also, I've heard that per-processor licences are declared illegal and MOFT
stopped this practice? Or am I mistaking?

As if you know what it will be in 5 years ;))
