S-L-O-W Compilation

I'm desperately trying to use my 486 with RH5.0, but trying to compile
the kernel takes (no kidding) about 18 hours!
This is right after the installation (I did a complete installation,
everything but Metrox), and all I'm trying to do is the usual:
make dep ; make clean ; make zlilo ; make modules ; make modules_install

The first three seem to take the longest, each one takes quite a few
hours.
Any ideas? I'm using a 486DX (25MHZ I think) with 8MB RAM and ~1GB HD.
My swap partition is over 100MB, and it's active.

What can I check?
