soft-link whatever it is that you made to work with a file called X (or
edit X as appropriate if it exists) then start X again using xinit. You
should see way more than just gray. If even this does not bring up
anything, place the single word 'fvwm' in a file called .xinitrc in your
home directory and do xinit again. After this, left-click on the gary with
the mouse. X lives in /usr/X11/bin/X usually.
