I have not used pine for quite a few years, but as I recall you can
filter by recipients or senders as well as subjects. Maybe a pine
expert on the list can tell you how to do it (or tell me that it is
impossible). Better yet, maybe you could check again with the pine
documentation. In any case, it's trivial to set up procmail to filter
your mail _before_ it gets to your favourite mailer. You can also use
formail to rewrite the subject field the way you like it. Consult the
man pages for procmail, procmailrc, procmailex, formail.

Now imagine someone who filters out all linux-il messages whose
subject starts with "[Nn]ewbie", "[Oo]ff-topic", "[Ff]lame", or
"[Pp]ine [Qq]uestion" (no, I don't do that). He/she will have to
modify or at least check the filtering rules to accomodate the
extraneous [linux-il].

To reiterate: I don't care if [linux-il] is present in the subject
field or not. For my personal needs it is probably useless and
harmless. I am pointing out that one can solve the problem at hand
without asking anyone else to solve it for him while possibly causing
(minor?) inconveniences for others.
