Re: Hay you hardware hackers ...

Well guys, I've been reading this Ping-Pong mail between you all and I
must say this, you guys know alot and I mean it. But you all forgot one
simple thing, the guy said that he uses Winshmoz 95, when using this so
called OS and the computer BIOS has support for a P&P OS in it (all bioses
have that), if the support is enabled, when windows 95 starts, it will go
to the bios, read it and update the NVRAM in the BIOS, thus making it look
like if the port is turned off from one side, while it's still on from
another. Before checking the maker of the motherboard, I'd suggest going
back to the BIOS and looking for two options that are called: Plug & Play
OS, and reset NVRAM. Usually these two come in pairs in your BIOS PNP
section. I my self turn them both to Disabled by default, that why I gain
back control over my computer, and not letting winshmoz 95 do its worst.

Regarding the so called Winblowz modems, well, as mentioned those modem
don't use a real Com Port but a virtual one assigned by a designated
driver. Another thing is that these modems don't have a DSP on them, which
means that they take use of the Pentium's HSP (Host Signal Processing)
functions, thus making your CPU go some what slower when using a modem.
I had one of these modems some time ago, and I can say one thing, after
opening 5 Netscape windowz, the computer simply crashed.

Another possibility is the fact that his modem is PNP based, which makes
it a little bit tricky to operate under linux, I've heard about a PNP rpm
file that add PNP features to linux, but I really don't know much about
that thing. The people who were at the last Linux Installation party had
similar problems with PNP modems, and they solved it but I really don't
know how.

I hope this helps a little...

Best regards,
  Nir Simionovich
