lsof: why is it so BIG ?

As the question states, why exactly must a utility that determines to whom
or what open files belong be 700+ k in size (source) ?!

Maybe I am missing something, but this is NOT a Windows application, is it
?

And in Linux line: Could a new <flameproofed> system call </flameproofed>
be added to dump all open file's process owners (PIDs), for example as
output from a /proc member ? I know that there are other ways to do it,
but this looks nice, except the transfer page size from /proc is limited,
so several pages would have to be selected, successively. I don't have a
pretention for an atomic snapshot, just something that can be run against
the inode table and the ps output to hunt files left zombied, for example
by NFS & co.
