UMSDOS is a filesystem which is readable by DOS, but also has attributes like
a unix-filesystem.
I use ext2. That's the standard. It can't be read by dos, though.
I don't know if UMSDOS can function as a root filesystem well.

You can download (almost) everything for free (although you still need to pay
for the connection-time, so perhaps copying a CD from someone is better...).
I use RedHat and Debian. I think RedHat is more user-friendly to the beginner
(Judging by your questions, you are one, am I wrong?).
There are more distributions that may be better for you. These are the two
ones I use frequently.
