It may be configured as /dev/hdb, even if it's the only drive on the
first controller (jumpered as slave). Check that.
If that isn't the case, try two other things -
1. Jumper it as slave and try the above.
2. Connect it to the second controller and mount as /dev/hdc or /dev/hdd
(depending on jumper settings).
Some CDs make problems when configured as IDE masters.
