Well, I prefer to use "cp -a" as well, but what you (and others) have said about
tar is simply incorrect. It DOES work for /dev/*. Well, as far as GNU tar is
concerned, of course - but for that matter, "cp -a" (cp -dpR) is specific for
GNU cp as well.
