I, once, on a machine with same configuration edited XF86Config manually, 
and that solved many problems.

In my opinion 800x600x256 is optimal resolution/depth for that card and
you can be sure about the mode you're using once you've commented other
modes from the configuration file.
Technically it's possible to use it with 800x600x16bpp, but who knows?
