VNC really works!!!
After a long and painful process, I managed to install NT 4.0 on bilobe,
my dual pentium 200 at home. I installed the latest version of vnc on it
and on another linux machine, and it does indeed deliver the promised
goods!
Performance isn't amazing, but I guess it could be better with a fast
ethernet connection between the two machines. Even so, it's quite
reasonable. There are still glitches - for example the cursor paints
certain areas (but it's redrawn correctly when pressing a mouse button).
In particular, the viewer is sensitive to resizing of the window in
which it works, and that's not recommended.
However - the bottom line is that it works! I managed to edit a word
document without leaving my beloved Linux desktop... IN HEBREW!!!
I think we MUST present this at computax. In my opinion, it might well
prove to be the single most important factor in peoples' willingness to
adopt Linux as a viable solution in office environments. I'll make some
inquiries tomorrow to see if I can get tow computers from a hardware
company, to connect as client and server. If not, I'll bring bilobe
which can be either server or client for VNC in NT or Linux, and we can
connect it to one of the other machines we'll have there. Bilobe is
screen-less, as I mentioned before, by the way.
Will let you know tomorrow if I got any contributions of hardware for
the show.
