Interesting. What series are they? The only modern series they have, as
far as I know, is 'king'. I tested these extensively, and had no problem
with their function.

The cable that usually comes with the UPS is a normal serial cable, and
isn't suitable for 'dumb mode' communication. The cable in the Netware
suit, on the other hand functions ok with several UPS programs, e.g.
powerd and genpower.
 
As to the original question, and inanswer to Stanislav's remark -
naturally I have the correct lines in /etc/inittab. I will indeed try to
see what strace has to say about init.
