I think you are using the wrong terminology
"serial port <-> ethernet" - means "Terminal Server"
"serial ports <-> one serial port" - means "Multiplexor" (Actually, a
multiplexor does more than that)
I have put together two Linux terminal servers using an 8-port Hostess
nonintelligent board. And actually it was quite easy and basic, plus I
used Samba to share serial printers to the Linux terminal server and
achieved an even more open connectivity with that.
Use the serial howto to understand how to use the Digiboard. All you
need is there.
