First rule about libc's, DON'T MESS WITH THEM. You could screw your
system. Now to the matter at hand, libc6, which is actually glibc2, i.e.
version 2 of the GNU project glibc library, includes new revisions of the
libc functions (well DUH) better memory/fs managment, performance,
reliability etc. Meaning, one should be inclined towards upgrading,
however, upgrading to a new libc ver. is a vary delicate task. If you're
currently running libc5, it means all your apps are compiled against
libc5, so simply removing libc5 and then copying libc6 instead will kill
your system (you won't actually get even this far, the moment you rm libc5
you won't be able to cp, or any other command for that matter, the libc6).
There are many guides you can find on-line (don't have a URL at the moment)
about upgrading + all the packages you'll have to replace.
Whatever you do, think first and do it cautiously. Better yet, make sure
you have statically linked versions of all the main bins (including init
and other main system bins ofcourse) before you let the destruction begin.
