CDC gives away free corporate AppServer system.
BIG, HUGE news for Linux... this just in on COLA.
up to 250 users for FREE, support will be available if there is a demand.
I guess it's a marketing probe to see if there is any demand for bigtime
IT apps on Linux. I also hope it's not the beginning of a line here,
companies on their last legs "suddenly" supporting Linux (along with
Netscape and Corel etc.)

CONTROL DATA OFFERS FREE APPLICATION SERVER FOR LINUX
Arden Hills, Minn., July 2, 1998 - Control Data Systems, Inc. today announced a
Linux version of its IntraStore Server 98, becoming the first major developer
to offer a message and application platform for the operating system. The
server and up to 250 user licenses can be downloaded at
http://intrastore.cdc.com.
IntraStore includes a messaging, Web, and directory server. It offers superior
messaging and application hosting capabilities, and its interoperability with
existing systems enables workgroups to link LDAP directories, disparate mail
and news clients, and otherwise standalone applications for immediate utility.
Corporate users can share hosted applications and access IntraStore's functions
(using IMAP4, POP3, NNTP, HTTP, SMTP, FTP and LDAP protocols) from most major
mail clients and Web browsers.
"The Linux community is a huge group of IT innovators," said Dave Folsom, vice
president and chief technology officer for Control Data. "They use this
platform to solve problems in major organizations, and IntraStore will help
them to do more." Control Data's freeware offering and collaboration forum are
consistent with the Linux community's tradition of gratis collective
problem-solving and application development.
"This is a major win for the Linux community," said analyst Rik Drummond of the
Drummond Group. "These early adopters in application development now have a
major partner and a quality server to help them maximize their IT
environments."
Control Data offers several security add-ons for the server. It plans to
expand the trial Website to include free applications, discussion groups and
support offerings, as well as links to other Linux-related sites. Application
development, message migration and outsourcing are also available from Control
Data.
