Linux & Users
Hi,
This is actually not true. Outside ISrael, where "standart" software
supplies all needed features regarding fonts, BiDi, etc. there are
actually a growing number of offices that use Linux and one of it's
office-packets as a normal "secretary-level" system. I have read in a
couple of comp. mags interviews with IT-managers of such places and the
bottom line is that they like it since once they got rid of MS they got
rid of all the MSWord problems (viruses, growing files that break, slow
performance) and got a system that runs stable and where the employee
can't change too much beyond the look of his X (Linux greatly reduced
their support overhead). There where many more minor benefits, too (like
reduced HW costs).
I think the main problem of Linux in Israel (and other non-ASCII
countries) is just the lack of a unified and centralized localization like
in MSWin. I tried to move my dad to Linux (some of you might remember) but
dropped the issue after realizing how difficult combining Russian & German
is on Linux & X11 (neither Applix nor Star support Russian natively). I
myself can't move completely to Linux, either because I happen to need the
"features" of MSWin, like OLE or Hebrew-MSWord (I don't want to encrypt my
text into TeX for each little letter or Lab-report).

PS: linux.org.il is really not reliable for the list ! I just got
the message back with a complaint about bat IP-name resolving. The IP it
complained didn't appear in the whole message !
