Here's some more info from me:
The notebook uses a NeoMagic board (2MB VRAM), which is unsupported by
Metro-X and Xfree86.
Got XF86_VGA-16 at 800*600 (and 640*480) to work by faking the hsync and
vsync ranges - works fine.
SVGA however, insists on going into 320*200 which gives lots of garbage,
and furthermore won't do even 16 bpp in the afore-mentioned garbage mode
cause it thinks its a generic chipset. Thats prob. a built-in limit
which can be changed in the sorce code, but first we gotta get a normal
resolution.
So, what do I do?
