swap space and disk speeds -> disk type?

oh joy :-) that explains it all...
now for an off topic question, if you'll allow me, since you seem to be
the most knowledgable in this: why do SCSI and IDE disks use different
technologies for the actual r/w mechanisms? shouldn't the
communication/control interfaces be interchangable between the two
technologies?
