I apologize for being misleading - bad memory, this was a long time ago.  I had
an IDE drive with Windows, but Linux was on an attached SCSI drive, so I
installed LILO with a initrd of the SCSI driver on the IDE drive.  Lilo at boot
time loaded the scsi driver, and then proceeded with booting off the SCSI
drive.  The same could be done with a floppy.
