ILUG Web Site
People got a bit over-heated over this subject, as seems to be the case
with many trivial debates.
While Offer's democratic ideas are really nice, I find them a bit
unrealistic in the given context. We have one person who is maintaining
the page, and it seems reasonable (in fact almost inevitable) that his
taste will influence the appearance of the page. Personally, I don't
care too much about the appearance, but the current approach seems nice
and clean to me. However, this is beside the point. We should clearly
try to keep the page useful for people with slow connections and simple
browsers.
Conclusions: (mine, needless to say)
1. Yaron maintains the site, and does a good job. Let's try to encourage
him and keep the criticism as constructive as possible. While he's
_the_only_one_ who does the job - his taste dominates whether others
like it or not.
2. No reason not to have a graphically richer site, provided that this
will not affect the general accessibility.
3. the way to achieve (2) is simple: if there's anyone who wants to see
a richer site, and is willing to invest the time needed to make his
dream come true - please step forward.
No reason why we shouldn't have two versions of the site leaving happily
side by side. The contents should, of course, be identical.
I hope this small debate has come to an end. I'd love to see some more
postings pertaining to the contents of the site rather than its looks.
For instance...
The Hebrew-Howto by Yair Rajwan is long outdated. I've once installed
hebrew support on my home system with only a limited success, and didn't
repeat the experience since it wasn't important enough for me and I
didn't have spare time to waste on it. However, has there been some
updated and concise description of the procedures to follow I'd happily
try it.
Now I'm sure at least some of the people on this list have recent
experience with installing hebrew support. If they send summaries of
what they know, the problems and fixes they discovered, etc., we can
update the HOWTO and put it on the site.
I'm willing to coordinate such an effort. To make things clear, by
'coordination' I mean reading people's contributions, trying them out
and editing them. I do NOT have the time to start experimenting and
write about my adventures.
Hope to get some input from you on that subject.
Cheers,
Tuvik
