Re: OFFTOPIC Re: Someone just said cookies are kosher !!!

Look, someone said cookies are good, period. I said they were bad,
because people who change computers AND browsers several times on a day
cannot be expected to run about with a floppy of cookies.

Example: Someone browses an inetresting site from work, planning to
continue in the evening. He goes home, starts the machine, and can't go
back to where he left off in the whatever it was he was using.

People who design for browsers with cookies turned on are taking a risk.
Some browsers do not have cookies AT ALL. Such as Lynx for example, since
we're ON TOPIC and talking of Linux-based browsers.

Someone has suggested to point the cookie store to /dev/null. Bad idea,
hangs the browser.

imho, if you are trying to sell something in an online shop, and make
assumptions about the users who are going to come & buy from you, you cut
your own profits. This is directly equivalent to putting out a sign saying
'no service without suit & tie'. I have stopped in the middle of the
process of buying something more than once because of such stuff.

Also, the solution for 'user tracking' is different. It's called
handles. Many chat sites know this very well, and use it. Using cookies
for this means, see above in paragraph #1.

For shopping, you should not rely on cookies. A <HIDDEN> part in the
forms will do fine, and makes no assumptions about what the user is using.
So cookies are NOT necessary to the user, they are so for the sites. As I
have said.
