this is generally my modus operandi:

step 1: try to install RPM of your right distrib version (i.e. libc for
4.2, glibc for 5.X, because the libXm is not the only library that
        changed)
step 2: if fails try to compile from original TAR
step 3: if fails again RTFM
step 4: if learned something new - fix it and retry to compile
step 5: ask the list

did you, per chance, skip a stage or two?
I'm just thinking, you may be a complete newbie to Linux, but if you need
DDD you know what programming is, hence you know how to compile things. I
don't program, but I know how to type "make".
