and it won't let you use lpr directly?

it should be a simple pipe

I never use rsh around here, but this works with ssh (should be similar)

[ira@rain ~]# cat file.ps | ssh shine "lpr"

the pipe sends it into the standard input of the lpr command on the
remote side.
