This is not normal. Look for information about XF86Config - especially
where they discuss video frequencies, delays, etc.

The PPP connection is established as root.
Then you launch your Internet applications as a normal user.
I think it's safer than suid-ing lots of files and programs.

Use backticks ("`") instead of single quotes. This is the kind of stupid
bugs which are easily solved by employing an extra pair of eyes, so you
are excused for having asked a FAQ type question.
By the way, the RTFM for this one is `man bash`.
