Sound-Blaster CD Interface

[Catalog this message under "Linux in the context of VERY low cost
hardware"]

I currently have a CD which works through the regular IDE interface (OK)
only the CD drive itself has all sorts of problems (both under NT and
Linux). Right now it prevents me from being sure all the installations
under Linux (using debian dselect) went fine.
My alternative is to use my previous computer's CDROM, only it worked
fine with window$ and DO$ which had proprietary drivers to detect it as
working through this [obsolete] SB interface.

My question is: If until now I used to access my CDROM as /dev/hdb
(which is legitimate and understandable), what should I do now (before
physically installing the 'new' old drive) in order to be sure after I
install I'll be able to access this CD through Linux OS?

thanks in advance.
