if it's scuzzy, I sugest you go clean it, or maybe buy a new one
altogether, make sure it's clean, preferably one with a SCSI interface.

that's not Jass, that's GAS. you have been feeding your computer too many
Humus beens on "port 1" , that's why your card is scuzzy2.

now seriously: have you read any of the howtos? SCSI tapes show up as
/dev/st* and /dev/nst*, as they are not random access devices like SCSI
disks (Jaz drives included). and btw, it's SCSI ID, not port numbers...

indeed SCSI Tape support is an important module to have. Redhat supplies
it by default, as I'm sure all the other distributions.
