I run 2.2.5-ac6 under Slink quite happily on a Toshiba Satellite
4080XCDT, I'd recommand upgrading to it (and use kernel-package for
that).

Hmmm, I don't remember what comes in the default debian kernel
configuration, but you can look in /lib/modules/2.0.36 and see what's
in there. Otherwise you'll have to tailore your own kernel (which is
very recommanded anyway).
My own question - if someone knows how to configure sound on my baby
(and please tell me the internal modem isn't a winmodem, please!) then
I'd appreciate any useful input.

Use "dpkg -S filename" to see which package contains these, thene
either run "dpkg -s package-name" (note the case) or look this package
up in dselect's "select" option.

Nothing special, just make sure you are pointing to the right
partition name in the "root=" line.

Stay away from Gnome for now. You can look up the "Debian gnome
staging area" (pointers through the new Gnome FAQ) if you want to
experiment, but it's not in a usable state right now. Also don't be
tempted to install glibc 2.1, for now.
