Look for UART recognition in the boot
sequence. You usually have something like:
tty00 at 0x03f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A
tty01 at 0x02f8 (irq = 3) is a 16550A
Following it should be the UART of your modem, if it's recognized.
IF it doesn't show up in the boot messages, then it's probably a winmodem
or something similarly abnoxious. In such a case - abandon hope...
