You should better use  "hdparm -tT" instead of "hdparm -t". Read man
page of hdparm for more info.

By the way, have someone a good experience with tuning IDE disks ? 
More specifically whether -c1 is safe enough with modern disks or
some of them require -c3 ? Are there drives for which enabling multiple
sector I/O ( -m option of hdparm ) is dangerous ?
