Introduction, X, pppd, afterstep,

Hello,

My name is Muli and I've been a lurker on both lists (linux-il and
redhat-list) for the last month or so. Since this is my first post I
would like to take this opportunity and say hello to everyone!

Last weekend I finally installed Red Hat 5.1. It's been a great
experience and I'm enjoying myself immensely.

I do, however, have some questions we I did manage to solve on my own.
RTFMs are welcome, provided you point me in the right direction...

1. My screen, under X, is trapezoid shaped... I mean that the base of
the screen appears to be a lot wider than the top, which look very
weird. Is this normal? I've tried playing with my monitor, but it
doesn't help.

2. I only manage to connect to the Internet as root. I use IBM.Net as my
ISP, and I connect with their script (ppp-on), which you can find here:
http://help.ibm.net/helplib/linuxp.html. When I try to connect as
non-root, pppd (which is activated through their script) gives me the
message: 'must be root to run pppd since it is not setuid-root'. This is
extremely
important to me, as I do not want to connect to the internet as root!
I've tried of course su'ing to root, but it doesn't help!

3. When I try to disconnect, with the following script:
	DEVICE=ppp0

	if [ -r /var/run/$DEVICE.pid ]; then
	 kill -INT 'cat /var/run/$DEVICE.pid'
	fi
I get the error 'kill: No such pid cat /var/run/DEVICE$.pid'
What is the problem? I know no shell scripting, and would appreciate any
pointers to HOWTOs or tutorials on the subject. My shell is bash, BTW.

4. Netscape does not recognize my computer's name... How do I tell it
host X is actually me?

5. My system came installed with tcp_wrappers... I've set up its
messages to go the log file according to the example at:
http://www.computers.iwz.com/linux/tcpwrap.html

But I'm not sure I did it right... I've set up the following line
kern.*;*.info /dev/console

This means that anything at all above 'info' level will get logged to
the console, right? including tcpd? How do I specify that only tcpd
stuff should go to the console? Again, any pointers to info will be
appreciated.

6. I'm using afterstep at the moment, and I was wondering if there is
any easy way to a. Maximize a window and b. Bring a window to the
absolute top (i.e. higher that the afterstep bar and the 'task bar'.
Also, how do I add stuff to the afterstep bar?

Those are all the questions I can remember at the moment, any and all
help will be appreciated!
