In fact, last year I've tried most new graphical mail clients, and always
returned to pine. It has all the functions I need in everyday use, and
almost all that I need at all. And it doesn't bother me with silly
graphics when I don't need it. It has no threads, but, in fact, it's very
hard to do good mail threads at all - you either lose track of what you've
read and what not or switch it off. Threads are good for archiving
puropses, but not for everyday mail reading. And for archiving you better
use mhonarc anyway :)
