you and Ury :-)

yes, I'm well aware it's a complex protocol with smart ability
handshakes. one exploit was even detected in it where the remote side
can ask for the use of some remote library maliciously and all sorts of
fun stuff. I meant to say that it's not a carrier protocol (OSI level 4
and below, roughly defined).

ssh lets me avoid having my password snooped, my remote activities
spied upon, and let's me log in as remote root. Telnet is so passe it
should be taken out and shot in our day and age. the client is still
great for debugging though, by connecting to random TCP ports and typing
directly. that's a different issue.
