One way could be adding a -bpp 16 in
/usr/X11/lib/X11/xdm/Xservers, so the line would look like:
:0 local /usr/X11/bin/X -bpp 16
Or, you can define the 16bit before the 8bit/24bit/32bit in the
XF86config file, in "Section Display" for your "Screen".
