I thought that, say, fetchmail didn't download duplicates by default
with POP3, unless you specify --all. I may be wrong. It probably
depends on the server marking retrieved messages properly, but if
that is not done correctly, it is definitely an issue you could
raise with the admin there.
In any case, are you really bothered by duplicates being downloaded
from the mailserver, even if you never see them? You must be really
short of resources. If the itch it so great, maybe you'll spend some
time on the sender-side filter that will detect mailing list addresses
and automatically delete all the rest, *correctly*?
You see, such a beast seems to me really tricky. A lot of messages are
sent to a list and some individuals, or cross-posted to several lists
of groups, *and* to some individuals. I consider hitting "wide reply"
(f or F in Gnus) a very reasonable reaction. I don't want to study the
recipient list in much detail, and apply manual selection. Besides,
how will I know, responding to a post in mid-thread, that John Doe is
subscribed to the list, and was not included, say, by the original
poster for some good reason? The decision algorithm will not be
trivial. It is so much easier for me to hit F...

Yes, Gnus knows how to deal with duplicates. The procmail solution is
more general. You don't need to study another package if you know how
to remove duplicates with Gnus, and use only Gnus. But how come you
get duplicates if your Gnus removes them?
