Linux Demo Day
Hello.
I think we should orginize ourselves to the linux demo day.
(which I've taken the responsibility as the ILUG coordinator)
We need to choose the day (it can be in the range of 12-18/9) and the
hours (I suggest all day).
I suggest friday (17) or saturday (18) for the day.
I prefer saturday, since I have to go to school, and I'm sure some
visitors are highschool students as well.
The downside of saturday is that some people are "shomrey shabat" and
there are no buses.
We need to get CDs, stickers, t-shirts, signs and all materials in time.
I may get a bunch of Caldera CDs from caldera and MythII demos from
loki, tell me what quantity we may need.
I may get more, I'm not sure.
Are we going to sell them at cost, give them away, or pay the event
through their sale?
I have no idea if hod ami will help sponsering too, but they have a
hebrew book about linux,
and i think it's a good idea to sell them to new users.
We need to design our flyers,
LDD has official flyers, but they are in english,
ofcourse we will have to print them.
We need to verify our sponsers.
PF1 have agreed to sponser us, do we have other sponsers as well?
We need space, preferably in a large shopping mall in tel aviv.
Can we book the same place we had in may? (dizengoff center).
We need hardware, including screens, mice, wires, keyboards for
installations,
and computer[s] + projector[s] for the tutorial/demonstaration
computer[s].
I suggest having ethernet cables and a phone line for people that wish
to configure their ppp or networks,
but these may not be availible or convenient.
We also have to decide on the quantity of these items as well.
We need to decide what to show in our demonstrations, and what tutorials
to have.
For the tutorial I suggest to show people how to login, use gnome/kde
basic functions, mount/unmount media,
and most basic operations they will need to know.
For the demonstrations, I suggest to show kde/gnome+e with the most
impressive themes, and demonstrate how cool
their computer can look, then we can show them it can be useful too, we
can show them wordperfect, lyx, and gimp as examples, we can show people
there
are availible games from loki and hopkins FBI. We can show some hebrew
efforts, such as hebrew menus under kde, and dov's reflected gtk widgets
(Eli, can you please make hnetscape availible???). We can dispell some
myths about linux (no graphic interface, hard to use, etc), show the
advantages of a multiuser os, multiplatform os (we can show linuxppc),
and we can answer questions from the viewers. (can linux do this and
that?).
We need to advertise.
I can write an article on Walla about installfests and inform everyone
about this one.
We need to know who will volunteer to install or help with the event.
The name "Mesibat Hatkana" sounds a little bit dorky,
maybe we can find a good name in hebrew that will draw more attention.
Here are some suggestions and points for the event:
- Instead for people having to wait to a specific installer holding
their computers,
we should put them in a queue, and while the computers are in the
queue, the owners will watch the
tutorial/demonstarion[s].
- Volunteers should not only install, but also sell/give CDs,answer
questions from people, and run the tutorial/demo.
(ofcourse these will all be different people... ;-))
- We need nametags so people will know who is an installer and how to
call him. :-)
- We need more chairs, the owners of the computers usualy prefer to sit.
- We need to draw people's attention easily, so it's a good idea to make
the demonstration viewable to as many people
passing by.
In short, let's make this installfest the best ever,
and break the installs/day record. :-)
Linux Demo Day (LDD) is an international effort,

The day Microsoft makes something that doesn't suck,
is probably the day they start making vacuum cleaner software...
(I was pointed out that Microsoft hardware usualy works)
