Sorry I was late to see this post, to sum up my experiances and answers
from all around:

* VNC is NOT an X server

* VNC is a bandwidth hog, I use it only on LANs if all else fails,
although it's almost usable on dialup too

* my favourite X server for winblows is Xwin32 from starnet
(www.starnet.com). they used to have a demo version that is fully workable
but explodes every two hours, one build of the demo was broken and never
exploded, it may still be available from TUCOWS.

* Mi/X is indeed not usable

* I think there was a project to port XFree to win32, but I never heard of
developments.

* get a monitor/keyboard switch!
