Linux Event: A Clarification
Hello all,
I received some e-mails (most of them personally - not to the list
- so you didn't see them) - from which I learned about a small mis-
understanding. So please read the following clarification:
My message was NOT an announcement. As most of the free conference,
the planned event also has some bodies behind it. These bodies are
the organizers and/or sponsors. In this case, three were known
before I posted my message - Oracle, PF1, and Compaq (more vendors
are still welcome). The fourth place in this list was reserved for
Linux-IL, and the other involved bodies agreed that Linux-IL will
join them without sponsoring anything (it was trivial, of course).
But still, I cannot talk on behalf of Linux-IL, so I had to get
your permission. On the other hand, the negotiations were
sensitive, and asking the group through the mailing list could
destroy the whole effort. The list has hundreds subscribers, and
it is archived publically on the web.
So we waited. On Tuesday, Natan Gavish of Oracle gave me a "green
light" to contact the list, and I did it immediately. Yet, many
issues were still open, but one of the many things which should be
done BEFORE we are going on, is to get the agreement of the
various joining bodies, and one of them is Linux-IL. (According to
the responses I get, I guess that the answer is "yes"... The only
"negative" response was from one who was so sorry for being abroad
on February 25 :-).
So as you can understand, all the plans are still tentative and
preliminary. The open issues include even financial issues (though
I estimate the chances to have the event on February 25 as 90%).
The problem is like the chicken and the egg. For example, let's
take the lecturers. If I closed with them all the details, and only
then contacted the list, it was not fair for the list. And if I
told the list about the lectures, and only then talked to the
lecturers, it was not fair for the lecturers. So I had preliminary
talks with the lecturers, and received principal agreements, then
told you about the lectures, and now I am free to go on with the
lecturers and give them all the details (when I'll *have* all the
details).
To summarize:
============
1. There is no announcement yet.
2. I don't know much more details than what I already wrote in the
first message.
3. Many issues are open, including financial (costs of the pavillion
for the sponsors), the exact time (I believe that if it will be
only half a day, it will be the first half), order of the
lectures (except for the order of the sessions - the technical is
going to be the first, unless Zeev or Amnon Barak will put a
Vetto), whether there will be another vendor (in addition to
Oracle/Compaq/PF1), etc.
4. I still didn't close all the details with Zeev/Andi (PHP) and
Prof. Amnon Barak (Mosix).
5. I can't know the type of the audience - it will be known only
near the event. I can only guess - some geeks (most of them - of
Linux-IL), students, press and media, employees of the trio
Oracle/Compaq/PF1, some dumb and newbies who are interested in
Linux because they heard about it so much, etc.
6. Nothing can be announced on the press - because nothing is
official. The same is true for our web site.
Thanks for your time and attention,
