How to start in single user mode

Hi list.
How can i start the server in a single user mode ?
I had a problem with one of the daemons that starts in the init 3 level
(telnet, ssh ,snmp ect') that didn't started and got stack.
So without no choice i had to reinstall the linux (but without
formatting the swap space and disk drive)untill i reached the screen
where it ask me what kind of daemons i want to tart at startup time.
There i simply unmarked the daemon that caused the problem.
But, it was a really stupid way to do it (not to mention the time it
took)

I have the rescue disk, So what do i need to do in order to start the
server in a single user mode ?

Thanks,

Mike
