The problem is not Linux, but the other apps he mentioned,
especially Netscape which is a memory hog with many memory leaks.
For example, the process of Communicator 4.08 from which I post
this message, spends currently 42 megabytes according to ps. Only
a few of them (9MB) are allocated for instructions and are
sharable.

Anyway, after a more exact calculation, taking into account the
average RSSs of these apps, and not only the real size of memory
(which is relevant more for the virtual memory than the pysical
memory), I tend to agree with you.
