Technion Linux Installation Party - A Retrospective

Hi All,

Well, the time now is 00:30, and the installation party was officialy
finished at around 22:00. To say a funny thing, someone just walked in
asking if the installation party is still taking place.

In any case, here is a short sum up of the facts of today:
1. Total number of systems installed: 86 RH 6.0
2. Total computer crashes and mallfunctions: 0
3. Approx visitors: 450
4. Maximum number of installations at a time: 8
5. Number of staff at all times: 8
6. Outside helpers: 4
7. Time frame: 09:30am - 22:30pm
8. Maximum number of computers waiting to be installed: 6

These are just figures that I've been keeping during the installation
party, just to see how it goes along. In any case, I would like to send my
thanks to the following people who made this event possible:

Stas, Pavel, Leonid, Costa, Moshe, Nahum, Shadi, Maamon, Alon, Aryeh and
a few more others that I can't really recall right now.

We had only one serious problem during the installation party, where we
had problems installing linux on a Dual P-II based machine from SGI. It
was running NT and the guy had a full hard drive, with no space left on
it. Kind of a bummer, cause it was a real beuty of a machine, and
installing linux on that one, would have been great. I can say one thing
about that machine, when SGI makes a PC, they waste tons of money on
design.

We had no problems installing RH6 on all computers, apart from minor
configuration problems with RivaTNT and Riva128 cards, 98% of instllations
went without any interference or re-configuration.

  Strong points:

Thanks to Intel's support for this installation party, all the staff had
special shirts on them with name tags, so everybody knew who is who. These
shirts are really cool, and I think that the shirts are a great idea for
any installation party in the future.
We had sufficient hardware, both on mice and keyboards. Intel also
provided CD-ROM drives and hard-drives as backup drives and means of
installation, which made the entire event much more technically bareable.
Refreshments were given to visitors for most of the day, thanks to
Intel, Actcom and PF1 who sponsered this event.
Speaking of PF1, the S.U.S.E cd's were flowing like water, and people
took them like hot cakes. The idea of handing each person who got his
computer installed a RH6 CD-ROM was great, and people were very thankfull
for it.

Well, time to go to bed now, I'm beat after a long long day. I'm waiting
to hear from you people who were here, or who weren't and may contribute
some thoughts to these matters, in order to make the next LIP better and
grander.

Best regards,
  Nir Simionovich
