A monofrad uses your PCs rs232 (serial) port. There are a few problems
with it:
1). the delay is higher (~60ms for etherfrad, ~80-90ms for monfrad).
2). Not scalable, and by that I mean that if you even want to add another
computer to your home network, you wont be able to do it, unless you link
it back to back to your own computer. Etherfrad allows you to buy a
300nis minihub (8 ports), connect the etherfrad to the HUB, and then you
can connect 7 more devices to the hub, seemlessly.
3). monofrad requires using a sync-ppp connection over the serial link.
The etherfrad doesn't require any special setup on your PC, and working
with ethernet on Unix is probably the most native way to work.
As for the throuput, there is no problem there.
I never checked the difference on CPU usage, but my initial guess would be
that it should be more strainfull.
