advice were happy to help when I asked them, but no need :
in the booklet you get with the ups, there are a diagram how the connector is.

what I did is:

ups: 9 pin connector                             linux serial port: 9 pin
--------------------                             -------------------------
pin 2                     wire                   pin 1
pin 4                     wire                   pin 7
                          1k resistor            pins 1 and 4

after you make this cable, ask me and I'll mail you my modified upsd

this works for me, hope it will work for you too
