I believe "real" corresponds to a geniune PS chip from Adobe, and "emulated" -
to a third-party interpreter (which probably converts PS to the native language
of that printer, like PCL in HP).

I know of a few cases when Lexmark Optra's (don't remember the number) failed
printing a PS file which was printed fine on a LaserWriter (and displayed fine
by gs). It seems that the printers don't support some of the PS Level2 features.
