Well, if you want to work with new GNOME and GTK+, change gtk+-1.0.6
package to gtk+10-1.0.6 (take at GNOME sites) and the same with glib. This
way you could retain 1.0.6 version and in the same time use upgraded 1.1.x
needed for GNOME.
The newest GTK+ version I'm aware of is 1.1.12. You may take it and other
GNOME packages in

About X11 - are you sure your X includes and libs are in usual places? If
not, use options of configure to hint where they are.
