Backup for many linux machines

Hi,

I'm looking for information on backing up multiple linux machines using
one central "backup server". Due to the volume of data, NFS mounting
the file systems and then backing them up as if they were local will NOT
do.

The backup server does not have to be linux (although I would prefer it
was), but the clients are.

I looked at BRU, but I could not find a client/server version, the
web page refered to NFS mounting remote systems. :-(

I also looked at legato, but I could not find a linux version.

TIA,

Geoff.
