I'm not saying that spam shouldn't be dealt with, but closing the list to non
subscribers isn't the correct way of doing so.  There are other ways to defend
against spam.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but the serious mailing lists I subscribe to (e.g.
IETF lists) are open.

People can live with almost anything, but for what purpose?

Closing the list is the wrong way to deal with spam.

It stops non subscribers from contributing.

And finally, it will force some people to change their configuration.  Sure,
they can do it and would probably be happy to do so if closing the list were
such a great thing.  But what were the advantages of this again?
