You should user Samba, recommend Samba 2.0.
Then check your options there (man smb.conf)
As far as I can tell, Samba can't authenticate users through the PDC,
but it has to use its own user list.

I use M$ proxy server in my organization, and I can tell you this:
MS Proxy uses three proxy services:
Web proxy - Proxy server for web and HTTP.
To use this you configure netscape (no matter what platform) to use
the proxy in that address.
The port number is usually 80 (the same as the IIS).

WinSock proxy - Winsock is important for IP transport that doesn't
recorgnize proxy servers
This includes DNS, Video feeds, etc. As the name implies - it is a
WINSOCK proxy
for this you need to have the winsock proxy client. You can't use
this proxy service.
I must comment that other proxy servers don't work this way (making
you use a platform-dependent
client). I have workaround for DNS (never tried it though): Use a
second NT server and install the proxy client
on it. Then install a slave DNS server and point it to your ISP's
DNS.

Socks proxy -Socks is multi-platform. Socks clients can transport just
about anything they want
    over the net.
You can configure netscape and msie to use it. MS Proxy supports
Socks4,
if it had supported Socks5, it could also resolve names. The problem
is that client applications
need to resolve names before transporting anything. To do that they
use a DNS server (yes,
the service you need the MS Proxy client for).

You can see another computer's browse list

smbclient -L <computer-name>
