[NO FLAME!!!] Re: downloading software
Question. Does every new subscriber to the list get an automatic email
with the rules explained clearly, the warnings set in CAPITAL letters
with a ton of exclamation marks, with direct threats of verbal and
differential SCSI cable abuse in case he/she sends a newbie question
to the list, and the URLs of ILUG, the FAQ, the list rules, the
archives, etc? If such a message is sent then the newbie-abusers will
always have the right to end their flames with "You've been warned."
Opinion. I would personally tolerate *any* stupid question that starts
with, "I've perused man, info, and howto and couldn't find the
answer." I would tolerate such questions even if the answer *is* in
the man page, but the newbie missed or didn't understand it (can
happen to a newbie, right?). I'd reply to that politely just because
the newbie put some effort into getting the answer himself (or was
smart enough to lie in the right way). But I am not the one who sets
the rules for the whole list, and there is an argument that even after
searching the docs one can ask one of the hand-holders first.
