Latest caldera I installed was 1.1, quite a long time ago, and I
don't remember a thing (there were no problems, though).

This message indicates that the kernel can't find the root filesystem.
It looks for it in the second partition of you first SCSI disk.
please give more information. E.g., how do you boot? from floppy - if
yes, how did you create it? from disk with lilo - how did you configure
it? Do you really have a SCSI disk? Is linux on it's second partition?
