it's even weirder! the 220 greeting line disappears when I telnet port
25 of ns.il and a few others only if doing it from my RHL 4.1 kernel
2.0.30 box, but just fine from anything 5.x (later kernels, obviously)
I wonder what else this screws up, and when that TCP stack bug was
fixed, (or is it in the firewalling rules?) since I haven't seen
anything about it on linuxHQ.com...
so: first line (packet?) of an incoming transmission on an outgoing TCP
session is SOMETIMES clobbered, when contacting specific hosts, but not
others...
I'll compile a new kernel and tell y'all if it solves it. I thank Russ
Nelson for having me try simply telnetting from a different machine, I
never suspected it was a local kernel bug...
