Several reasons. First, you must realize that downloading a digest through a
28.8 modem takes a little less time than loading its messages separately -
much time is saved on initiating connections, etc., and also a bit on headers
(and possibly footers) transferred with each message.
Second, it depends on what you do with the mailing list. If you are a frequent
poster, you probably won't use digest. If you use the list mainly as a source
of information and keeping yourself up-to-date, digests are more easily
handled.
Third, I for one use POP at home, but peek at my home mail with IMAP from my
office. Linux is *not* my primary OS. When doing that, it's much easier to
look at a message list that has a few digests than on a message list
containing 60 messages.
Just remember that for being a member of a mailing list, you are not required
to be an expert on procmail or fetchmail or anything at all. Even newbies can
subscribe to the list, provided that they don't post messages outside the list
charter. For people with minimal filtering expertise, digests are heaven.

Yeah, many support lists go like that. It saves on the number of messages sent
by accident back to the list, such as "Hi Moshe, I didn't know you were on
this list, too". This makes it more likely that the person who asks a question
gets an answer, but that clueless people won't post to the list as well. Of
course, it may happen that answers won't reach the list. This usually means
answers from clueless people, and only in a minority of cases, simple
forgetfulness, which can easily be overcome by sending the message again.
