Volunteers Wanted
Hello,
We want to have a live demonstration of the "Next Generation" of
Linux in the event, on February 25. This demonstration will be
presented using a projection (sorry - only 800*600, 16 bit plane).
[Beginning of blah-blah-blah; You may skip it]
Since our purpose is not only to inform the already Linux
enthusiasts, but also (or mainly) the press and the people who are
still considering their next steps, we don't want to confuse them
with too many "competing" alternatives, so we had to choose one of
the GNOME/KDE/others.
I hate religios wars, and I want to keep myself far from them, but
in this case I *HAD* to take a decision, so I chose GNOME. I'll be
happy to explain the reasons in details, but not in this place; You
are welcome to the event to ask me, or just call me (050-237338).
Meanwhile, I can hint that the reasons don't have anything to do
with technical features, or with licensing "problems" (I don't have
any complaints to Qt or Troll, and even appreciate them for
providing the source of their toolkit. They are free to choose any
license they want, and it is their own decision. I know that what I
am writing here is not original; Linus already said very similar
words). The main reasons are connected to presentation issues.
[/End of blah-blah-blah; End of skip]
Anyway, in order to demonstrate this "Next Generation" Linux, we
are looking for people who have:
* knowlegde and/or experience
with:
* installing and/or using and/or demonstrating
as more as possible of the following:
* RedHat 5.2
* Kernel 2.2 (we will use the 2.2.2, to be released in 24
hours). BTW: Is there anything to DEMONSTRATE in the
kernel?
* Samba 2.0.2, including its new user interface.
* GNOME (current version is 0.99.8, but hopefully the pre-
1.0 will be ready before the event).
* Enlightenment-DR0.15 (final 0.15, or at least a pre of
it, is to be released before the event).
* Wine (we will use the latest snapshot - i.e. 990214).
* Any other new feature/software/stuff of Linux, which is
cool and impressive for demonstrations. Please, I mean a
REAL exciting stuff, not a yet another nice package you
developed with a friend and loved.
It can be even a cool configuration of one of the above
things - like a special configuration of Enlightenment.
Any thing that will cause the non-Linux people to say:
"Wow!".
* There are a lot of stuff which is in the level of the
"platform", rather than something which we can simply
demonstrate, and not only the new kernel. Does anybody
have any idea how to demonstrate things like GTK+-1.2 or
Java 2 (in case we will have both BEFORE the event) ?
If these details look too similar to a major version of a major
distribution of Linux which is going to be launched on March (or
April) - it is not a coincidense. I just want to show the people
how the OS that most of them will use in 1999, looks.
The stuff I detailed above, will be installed on a loaned machine
from Compaq, but will be limited to 800 * 600 * 16 bpp (because of
the projection limitations).
I still don't know when we will start the installation, but the
final things, tests, and the general rehearsal (Chazara Generalit)
will take place at Ganey-HaTaarucha, on February 24.
Volunteers can contact me directly (050-237338).
Thanks in advance,
