Well, I run kde on a 486/66 with 24 megs and it runs relativly fine (I
can't say thats its fast enough, but defently faster then win 3.11 that I
have installed).
Probably something with your setup is wrong. Try to recompile the kernel,
usually helps.
BTW what kernel version are you working with?
You can also try to run fvwm2 instead of kde with will be faster, but
according to your description its not the problem.
Try also to reconfigure your x server, maybe you have a bad configuration.
Also try top to see if the system is running anything heavy in the
backgroung for some reson.
