(You knew this was coming, folks, didn't you? :-)
I agree with Guy about pico not being a good investment; I'd like
to note that an alternative to the vi-vs.-emacs war exists.
FTE (http://www.kiss.uni-lj.si/~k4fr0235/fte/) is an excelent
editor for Linux, OS/2, Windows and even DOS. Its interface
will be familiar to people coming from "the other OSes", but
it's not braindead. Among the strong features in FTE are syntax
cologing and smart indentation; CTAGS support; fold/unfold of
portions; LOTS of modes (C, Java, Perl, merge, email, HTML, TeX,
etc.); it works both in X and in a VT (the feature I miss the
most is that it doesn't work on a TTY and therefore can't be
used via telnet etc.).
I do recommend giving it a try. Personally I get along just fine
with vi, and believe there is merit in knowing your way with an
editor that exists everywhere (and vi isn't a bad editor at all),
but for longish things I really like FTE.
As for memory concerns: the X version I'm running right now takes
just over 2 MB of memory, 400k of them resident. For comparison,
vim 5.3 that comes with RH 5.2 takes just over 1 MB, but 600k of
them are resident (before any file is loaded). I rarely run emacs,
so I won't compare with that. You know what they say about emacs..
it's a good OS, but we preffer Linux <g>
Oh - one last thing: shouldn't we enFAQ all this discussion?
