The PCI probe hangs the machine imho. Try to enter BIOS setup and inspect
the settings. It is possible that your machine is configured in a way that
makes the PCI probe in Linux hang it, or you have broken hardware on the
PCI bus, or the mobo has some problem, such as bad memory somwhere. If you
have 'tuned' your mobo, set the factory default settings and reboot, and
leave it like that until you find the real reason.
