Simple - PPP (or more probably one of the scripting calling it or called
by it ) is changing your hostname according to the IP you get. Since
XHost is determiones who is alloed or not to connect to xserver by
hostname (and user) you are not allowed to open new windows. Same thing
with XDM login

Short term solution:
just type "hostname localhost.localmachine" to fix it.

Long term:
find out what script changes your hostname during PPP connection and
make it stop.

A word of warning:

All of this is a wild guess. Std. disclaimer applies, YMMV etc.

Good luck.
