I'll report from my point of view at the installation party. I was there
from 9:00 till around 13:00, and mostly did installations and answered
questions. Nahum also asked me to help on some organizational stuff, but I
don't think I could help much, since it was way too crowded. The place was
crawling with lots of people, and it wasn't organized to deal with that
amount. There were 14 installation stations, yet there were around 4-5
people doing the installations, and they didn't have what needed for the
installations. Next time, we'll need a CD with latest XFree rpms burned on
it, as 90% of the installees there had an ATI AGP card or a Matrox G200
which required the latest XFree (3.3.1-3). The crowd was showing definite
knowledge of Linux, and I couldn't find almost any newbies around. 90%
worked on Unix before, and 80% knew Linux before.
Suggestions for the next party: PF1/Sivan, no offense, but please don't
bring dozens of employees to stand around doing nothing. They got in the
way of helpful people doing stuff. I also don't think that the "Ask Nahum"
approach is the way to go. Nahum seemed to be trying to get on top of
everything, a credit to him, but it was simply too complex an operation to
be carried by one man. When we had parties in the Technion there were at
least 3 people who knew the answers to all the questions (IP addresses
that can be given to computers, gateway, where can I find a CD to install
from, boot disk, monitor, power cables etc.) Also, there should have been
someone in charge of processing incoming people (and computers ) and
launching then to the next installer that is becoming available. I've had
a queue of 7-8 people behind me, while another installer had 2.
That's what I can think of right now.
To sum it up, the party went well, we installed a big bunch of computers,
but we could definitely need more planning. I offer my services as an
experienced party thrower for the next party. :)
