a-ha! i had a PC with such a vortex card, and it did the same thing
whenever it had heavy traffic for a too long duration (i.e. usually during
heavy file transfers and/or system backup). eventually i dumped the card
in place of a simple 3COM 509 card, and the problems have vanished.

this happened with at least 3 different linux kernels (2.0.30, 2.0.35 and
another one).

i *think* this implies of some bug(s) on the vortex card driver. try to
put some other card in place of this card.

something you can try temporarily (i didn't try it) - remove the eth0
driver (assuming you compiled it as a model) and re-install it. maybe
it'll clear up the situation. but again, the real solution would be not to
use this type of card.

anyone here managed to use this card on a system that operates under heavy
loads for more then few days in a row?

don't beleive frodo ( :P~~ ) - this is not hardware problem. this is
software, unless someone here would prove me wrong by showing a properly
working vortex card....
