A wild guess - you are perfectly connected just the DNS servers are not
listed in /etc/resolv.conf

Try putting there the IPs of whatever DNS server your ISP uses.

If this doesn't work - send the output of the commands "ifconfig", "route"
and thge content of /etc/resolv.conf? Also include the whatever is added to
the syslog (/var/log/messages) when you try to "connect"/boot and what ISP
you're using.

Also, I'm inetrested in hearing how a cable modem works - you say it's
connected as a network adapter?
