Today, Matan Ziv-Av blurbed:

half-and-half. if I read you something off the screen, I won't
translate it on the fly. "Tivdok Et HaKinfug Shel HaInittab, VeTekanfeg
gam et ha X-Server" is a random example of a sentence out of such a
conversation, is that really hebrew?

I'm also frequentling the Israeli Fidonet network "C|net" where zealots
will linch you at times if you don't write in Hebrew. it's fun at times
for me sitting here in the US and missing Hebrew to read the general
messages, but walking into a technical forum is a pain in the butt...
they translate everything...

"Ha'Im Hetkanta et HaNahagon HaKhadash shel Tsorev HaTaklitorim
LeKhalonot Ha'Tashna"h?" (in Hebrew letters...)

translation: " Did you install the new CD-R driver for win95?"

it takes time for me to read it, translate it, and then reread it and
understand what they wanted. and this was a simple example, I've seen a
few that were like a crossword puzzle definition.

(btw, I'd love to be able to type in Hebrew for the hell of it... anyone
knows where hpine 4.10 is hiding?)

a buggy mail reader whose security hole allowed the "melissa" virus
paralyze mail servers of a few major corporations this weekend,
including Charles Schwab and Intel. accidently, it's distributed by
Mickeysoft with their buggy OS. yippy.

there are a few more systems I once believed in and have failed to
survive the test of reality. Hebrew has no standard on Computers yet,
nor are all the subscribers on this list (Alex Khalil, Jeff Rose, Issa
Saras etc.) Hebrew speakers. Why not respect THAT?

we are part of a community. whether it's the linux-il, international,
Israeli, or world community, we try (I do) to be a useful or at least
non-disturbing part of that community. right now the community called
"linux-il", or "GILI" or whatever we want to call it is defined by
NOTHING except this list. we don't do shows, we don't have an
ultra-impressive super-informational website, we don't conduct lectures,
and we hardly have any installfests anymore. because of that reason we
need this medium to be friendly for people from the outside (New
immegrants, exchange students, non-Hebrew speaking Israelis, hopefully
more palestineans, and world subscribers from all over, I have examples
from each of the above categories on this list for you).

If we don't keep it English, there will be a split, "brain migration" to
other lists, and we'll look like the French, Germans and any other
country with slight unhealthy xenophoebic tendencies. you know I was one
of the first 2000 people in Israel to get an ISDN line? even got me a
free Teles card to test it with on a loan... I could never get it to
work, since the isdn4linux list was all in German, I actually posted
Questions in English and was replied in very technical German even my
dad couldn't translate for me, and I finally gave up a whole business I
had planned around it. I don't want this list to get there.
