Mike, that is what NIS is for.
For 3 machines, you'll need a NIS master server, and the other machines
should use ypbind to bind to it. You'll need to properly define
/etc/passwd and /etc/pam.d/* files. Everything you need is already written
in the NIS-HOWTO.
