and the answer is:

autofs can't do it.

What I do with autofs, is the following rules:

1) only directory name in the autofs table (ie, no
/some/where/in/the/fs; only the word /here/, without the '/')
2) mount in /auto, and symlink from where I want it to really be.

ie, if I'm automounting /usr/local, I do:

ln -s /auto/local /usr/local

and in the autofs table, I do:

local	options		nfs:/usr/local

and, I place in the NIS auto.master:

/auto/	auto_linux (the _ gets translated to a '.')

as for AMD, well, I avoid that monster on Linux; it's a hack, it's not a
kernel FS, and it can cause double NFS mounts. (under linux that is)

but, yea, I wish autofs supported the direct maps, and the net mapping. 
(net mapping: cd /net/machinename/, and the NFS exports show up for
ya..)
