documentation says you shouldn't, but not "you can't". I have here a few
users with huge homedirs (you need that for development environment) and
I many times gave entire 1.5-2 gig partitions to single users and when
they were close to exhausting them, I had to reduce the amount of
root-reserved percentage to 0. it worked on a mounted partition just
fine, but like the manpage sugests: don't do it (and I add: if you don't
REALLY have to).

at least do it in single-user mode, you reboot so many times anyway.
