problems after compiling a kernel
Hello all.
last week I got me an old 486 box, so I could have my own computer. i scavenged the
4.3GB HDD that contains RH6 from my previous computer (a P2/300) and installed it
into the 486. hardware wise it was ok, but of course it didn't boot the kernel. so I took
out my trusty rescue disk and sat down to compile me a kernel. after several tryouts i
managed to do everything right (I hope) and got a usable kernel which then went on to
a diskette.
it boots fine, but when it gets to 'finding module dependencies' it just pause there. the
HDD blinks a little at start but after a while this ends to. i left it like this, once, for
almost two hours and it didn't continue. so I break it with ^C and it continues to boot
normally and everything seems to be fine.
the only problems that I've found (during normal operation after I break the 'module
dependencies') is that it doesn't auto mount the fat system on the second drive, like it
used to do on my previous computer (I compiled the msdos fs support into the kernel
- it's not a module), and when I run mc , it reports some kind of problem with
shr_util.c or something to that affect (I can't remember right now) but continues
normally.
and yes, I did do 'make modules' and 'make modules_install' .
I have two more problems - completely unrelated, but on the same machine :
1. when I drag a window while in 1024x768x8 mode in X (not dragging a frame, but the
whole window) the screen noticeably wobbles , like the vertical scan lines are out of
sync or something. it doesn't happen any other time. my graphics card is a poor
cl-gd5428 on a VLB . is that normal ?
2. I tried to use LILO to multi-boot into either HDD (the other one runs MS-DOS) and
at first it was quite ok, but after two days or so it started malfunctioning, putting 'L 01
01 01 01 01 01 01...' on the screen whenever the computer boots and refusing to do
anything else.
I used the compact and linear options in the lilo.conf file when it was still working ok
(other wise it was failing) and I didn't change anything when it went wrong. can
someone tell me what I can do ? I currently boot either from diskette, or with
'loadlin.exe' .
thanks for any help .
