Using XFree86 With a Television
Hi, dear ILUG members:
I'm having difficulties in configuring Linux to use the TV out
correctly.
I've tried an ATI-based card and then read in the XFree FAQ somewhere
that it doesn't
work well, so I've replaced the card to an STB Velocity 128. The 128
wants to work only at
320x200. When I configure it to do more than that, I get out of sync.
On both cards I get a good picture on text mode (btw, on the STB you can
see clearer, and you can
also make the characters be bigger if you enlarge the font.
1. I know that Televisions can only work on 50Hz-60Hz. What HSYNC do
TV's need?
2. Does anyone have any expirience in that type of configuration?
3. In my testings I do a lot of guessing and assuming, becuase I can't
calculate exactly
what numbers should I use, and I can't use xvidtune because I can't
run X (what's the big
idea behind a refresh/sync configurator that runs only on X ?!).
Can someone give a practical example on how that calculation works?
Becuase I read
the documentation and it doesn't seem that simple. I need more data
than I have to
correctly calcualte the freqs (like "video bandwidth")?
