Linux Event
Hi all!
Introduction:
============
I am proud to tell you about a planned Linux event during "Internet
World" conference/exhibition. The effort is led by Oracle Israel,
and currently, PF1 and Compaq (DEC) Israel are joining it. The event
will be hosted by People&Computers, who is charging the vendors for
it. Since the registration is going to be free of charge, these
costs, as well as other costs, are to be divided between these
companies, so vendors which are interested to join the event, should
join Oracle/PF1/Compaq by co-sponsoring the event. Linux-IL is
welcome to join too, but without sponsoring anything; Fair enough,
ain't it?

* THE EVENT IS SCHEDULED TO FEBRURAY 25, GANEI-HATAARUCHA *

Sessions of the Event:
=====================
The event is going to include a commercial session, in which the
various vendors will demonstrate/announce Linux products, and
express their commitment to Linux. I also hope to see un-bundle
offerings (i.e. leading hardware vendors to announce that specific
machines will not bundle Windows for customers who need them for
Linux, so the Microsoft tax is avoided), Linux pre-loaded machines,
and obligations that specific configurations are "certified" to
install and run Linux on them.
In addition, there will be a technical session, with lectures from
Prof. Amnon Barak (Hebrew Univ.), head of the Mosix project, which
its Linux port is going to be announced soon (it have been delayed
till now because they waited for kernel 2.2.0), and from the main
developers of PHP, the scripting language used by 250,000 (!)
Internet sites (source: NetCraft), most of them Linux sites, to
serve HTML pages dynamically ("The UNIX answer to Microsoft's ASP").
If I am not wrong, main parts of PHP were developed under Shachar's
Linux (vipe.technion.ac.il). Both of the projects are developed
mainly in Israel, and are very interesting and important even from
an international point of view (PHP is already important, and Mosix
has all the chances to replace Beowulf; Mosix is near-SMP, rather
than MPP). Both of the projects are going to have significant
developments (and announcements) in the near future, and the event
will be a good opportunity for a "premie`re", with international
cover.
As it looks now, I'll lead this session (what is the English
translation for "LeHanchot"?). I guess I'll open it by saying some
words about all the exciting developments since middle of January
till the date of the event (i.e. kernel 2.2, GNOME1.0/KDE1.1, Samba
2.0, the last improvements in Wine and its ability to run Word97,
etc.). Real revolutions, at least in my humble opinion.
A third part, an installation party, is still in doubt, because of
the following reasons:
1. It is too near to the installation party of PF1.
2. An exhibition is not the best place for installation parties
(although Linux and Linux-IL will gain wonderful public relations
if the press will "discover" the issue of installation parties. I
already can imagine what the newspapers will write about it).
3. We are still unsure regarding to the allocation of the pavillion:
if we will have it for a day or only a half.
Benefits for Linux/Linux-IL:
===========================
I believe that the event will make great public relations for Linux
(and Linux-IL), and will help Linux to gain recognition in Israel. I
am sure that the event will gain a massive cover, not only by the
Israeli press, but also will be slashdotted and covered by the
international Linux press.
I think that Linux-IL must join it, especially when all the other
bodies should pay much money, while Linux-IL can join it for no
charge ;-)
How Can You Help:
================
1. Although Linux-IL got the privilege to have its name together
with Oracle/PF1/Compaq, but for no charge (contrary to these
companies), and although I can't see any reason why not to join
such an event, I can't talk on behalf of Linux-IL, so I must ask
you to confirm it. The mailing list is too informal for
decisions, and I don't know if there is any procedure to vote, so
propose a procedure, and if you want to help the event, vote
"Yes" when you will be asked to vote.
2. If you are employed by one of the top vendors, or another company
who has the needed resources to co-sponsor this event, try to
convince your bosses to join Oracle/PF1/Compaq. This is relevant
also if you are not working for such a company, but only have
connections (personal and/or business) with its decision makers.
In any case, please contact us before, since some of the vendors
are already in a negotiation.
3. If the installation party will not be cancelled, we will need
some volunteer "GURUs" to help with installations.
4. Tell friends, and spread the rumor.
5. Show presence!
Apology:
=======
I could not tell the list about the event earlier, because too many
issues were open, and there were sensitive negotiations which I
didn't want a so public list like Linux-IL to know about.
Credits:
=======
It may look that I was the main organizer; But I was only the man
who "tied" all the connections. Even before I was involved in this
effort, PF1 and Hetz (separately) were in touch with Peli (People&
Computers), and deserve a credit for the idea. Peli asked me to
help, and I contacted Natan Gavish (Oracle) who was interested,
pushed it forward, contacted Compaq and other vendors, set meetings
with all the involved, and deserves a credit too. Oracle is very
excited (like us) with the future (and present) of Linux.
All the trio (Oracle/PF1/Compaq) deserve a credit for sponsoring the
event; More vendors are welcome!
