SCSI Tapes

I added a SCSI tape (Travan-4) and would like to start using it for backups.

However, when I start up I get:
Detected scsi tape st0 at scsi1, channel 0, id 3, lun 0
Unable to get major 9 for SCSI tapes

I'm using linux 2.0.36, RH 5.2, scsi tape support is compiled in the kernel.

KBackup says it doesn't support this device (something about
"rewind-on-close"). Any suggestions for a backup program that does support
this kind of tape?
