1. when pppd is launched from a terminal (not as daemon) then it does not
assume that the route it opens is to be the default route for all packets.
fix: add 'defaultroute' to /etc/ppp/options if not already there. man:
pppd howto: ppp-howto

2. when a connection is up, you rely on the ISPs name services to resolve
names. Since the only way for the local system to get names at that time
is /etc/hosts, the nameserver must be there. 

3. the host resolver library uses a nameserver mentioned in
/etc/resolv.conf to find names. Thus the nameserver must be there (as IP
address). man: resolv.conf

4. the host itself must be configured to know about /etc/hosts and the
remote ISP named (aka bind). This is the file /etc/host.conf, which should
contain:

order hosts bind
multi on

The multi prevents the system from getting dizzy when it has many names
(ex: localhost + darkstar).
